Kaikaya was our favourite place to eat in Tokyo. We chose the 10 course meal, which ranged from amazing corn tempura to tuna jaw (that tasted like the greatest spare ribs we ever had). The nigiri was outstanding, fatty tuna and mackerel were among our favourites. The tiger shrimp was out of this world. In short, if you want to experience excellent food in Tokyo, this is the place to go. The chef found a perfect balance of traditional Japanese cuisine with a delicious western flare. The flavours were mind blowing. You should definitely eat here.
Outstanding imaginatively presented food, ambience and service and great value for money. I really felt lucky to have dined at this place.
Very nice place! Had big expectations over this place and they were met. A little to touristic but the food is awesome
Great fun night! Food was great and personnel entretaining
AMAZING! Truly outstanding gem found near Shibuya
Been there enough times to have our picture on the wall. It's a must-do and we go every time we're in town.
The dishes were served infrequently. The 2,3 n 4the dishes came together n then waited 15mins for 5th dish. Quality of food was average n portion was small.
The place is great, the food is delicious. The only thing is that for a place that’s course-meal based their timing is a little off. They can bring 3 dishes in a row and then take a long time for the next course. But it’s delicious, the service is great, just make sure you don’t have anything else to do afterwards
great place, crazy people, food was delicious, really amazing!
This place is the bomb, a true neighborhood gem. I have already returned once and will return again for Theo tasting menu.
Best meal during our holiday in Japan; cant recommend it highly enough. Extensive menu; friendly staff, great atmosphere :-)
Was recommended by family who have taken a trip to Japan previous and this place did not let us down. Food was fantastic no complaint on the food at all. Servers were fantastic, happy and made the experience so much better. Went with my wife and kids (3 and 6) and they had a great time. Place is small so definitely make a reservation.
The atmosphere, value, and service at Kaikaya were fantastic. We were very happy with the Hana course meal, and the staff were very warm and welcoming. We would definitely recommend this restaurant!
Our experience at Kaikaya was fantastic. We only had a short wait before our reservation and we ended up each getting a drink and the 10 plate set menu plus dessert. The food was incredible, super fresh and beautifully presented. All of the service was attentive, high energy and super fun. Meeting the owner would have been one of the highlights for us - after we told him we were Australian he told us about his trips to Australia and that some of the photos the restaurant was decorated with were from his trips there. We left in a great mood, and absolutely stuffed to the brim. Thanks Kaikaya!
I’d recommend trying the 8, 10 or 11 course set meals, so you can sample the rich flavors of each course. This was one of my favorite meals while in Japan! It’s a must try, when in the Shibuya area. Reservations are a must & if you don’t smoke, request for the non-smoking section.
Kaikaya is our "go to" restaurant in Shibuya. It's inventive Japanese cuisine is often surprising and tasty.
The food is good, the rooms are nicely decorated, but what this place misses, in my opinion, is atmosphere and authenticity. The service is not bad and certainly kind, but a bit too fast (we were served the first three courses almost at the same time, and there was no room left on the table for all the dishes) and also very standardized. The waiters tell you the kind of things they expect you want to hear as a tourist. There are definitely more genuine izakayas in Tokyo.
Thank you for all the delicious food and kindness.
I hope you'll see me again next time.
Great atmosphere and the set menu was delicious!!!
Ordered the 10-course meal, which is charged per-person. Quite expensive for the value, as some of the "courses" were just a single piece of shrimp or single ear of miniature corn per person. After the 5th course, there was a lag of about 45 minutes before the next three courses came out at once. Some of these courses were raw or simple, so I'm not really sure why it took so long. The table next to us (party of 2) also had the same extended waiting time. After 2 courses, our party had to move tables. I assume that this was because a party without a reservation came in and they wanted to move our party of 4 to a smaller table, so they could seat the new party of 5. This unexpected party MIGHT also be the reason for the delay in service. The waitstaff and workers were very friendly, but they constantly forgot to bring water (when they moved our tables, we were left 1 soy sauce dish and 1 glass of water short, and we never got those despite requests). The food itself was tasty, but lacking value. The best dishes, in my opinion, were the tuna spareribs (actually from tuna jaw) and the fish carpaccio. Some other dishes were interesting and tasty (soup, sakura ice cream) but lacking in value. If possible, I would recommend against the course menu and would recommend instead ordering a la carte.
Fantasch restaurant! Zou het zeker aanraden hier te gaan eten. Prijs kwaliteit is uitermate goed, wij hadden 10 gangen vis tasting en een gelato voor ongeveer EUR 35. Wel reserveren.
Excellent seafood! Outstanding cuisine in a very fun and cozy enviroment. They gave us extraordinary recommendations and we wouldn’t hesitate coming back. Thank you!!!
The seven of us chose the middle priced set menu, great food, great ambience, we would highly recommended it.
One word: FUN. Go.
Beyond amazing seafood, especially considering the price. We had a perfect dinner.
Excellent seafood, sake, and ambience. Great service too! Very enjoyable place to dine in.
Fun place and delicious food in Tokyo. 10 course menu is awesome value. Staff is attentive and lively! A must visit when in Tokyo!
Our favorite Tokyo fish restaurant. Been coming here for over 10 years.
Absolutely amazing food with great staff that make the experience super enjoyable
Amazing restaurant, I highly recommend it -Love from Montreal, Canada
One of the best meals we had while visiting Tokyo! The chef’s tasting menu is a great value and they have an awesome sake list. Staff is very friendly.
Great, boisterous atmosphere and a very attentive staff who happily catered to my soy sauce allergy, which is a hard thing in Japan. The food was outstanding, with the highlight being two lightly fried whole sea bream that we were sad to finish.
This spot is a fish focused izakaya and is a fun and lively place. They are tourist friendly so you'll see a mix of locals and visitors. They speak enough English to help you. The price can't be beat - about $30-35 for the 'small' complete menu - about 7-8 courses and they are not super small. Its a hearty meal and delicious. We went twice in our 8 days in Tokyo and brought friends the second time...they loved it too. The fish is super fresh - I'm picky about this and not one item in both visits wasn 't uber fresh.
Sweet spot. Great food and ambiance
The service was great, the food delicious and the place was pretty cool
Kaikaya is a really lovely lively restaurant. The tuna tartare is outstanding and definitely our favourite.
But highly recommend if you want a fun evening
Great food and service. Staff were awesome!
We had the Tuna jaw which was fantastic.
The food was outstanding, however it took us 2.5hours to have our meal as the kitchen was very slow.
Food quality is very average. Disappointed as it was good 10 years ago. The chef seems to be resting on his laurels. All I can say is that it is value for money.
