La Fontana - West Ashley
First off, I booked outdoor seating and someone who seemed like a manager/owner firmly told me I didn’t book outdoors, then proceeded to argue with the host in front of me. Afterwards the manager person came to our table and started whining to me and my date about that employee multiple times. I ordered Shrimp Scampi and it was way too salty, watery, and the shrimp was tough. Nothing about it was more special than a microwave meal.
They couldn’t find our reservation which was unfortunate, but they had plenty of seating so it didn’t really matter. They don’t have a computer system so I think what happens is if you make a reservation a few hours before then they don’t know that you made one and write it in their little book. Other than that, the food was absolutely delicious!! I’d go there again, but I’d call and make sure they got my reservation first!
It’s become a Charleston favorite. Fabians is authentic. The saltimiboca di vitello relible and special. She is improving the wine selections.
Our first impression was the hostess acting extremely stressed out that OpenTable was down and that "someone was texting her the reservations"...and she couldn't find ours. Then we were seated and it took forever to be greeted and served...one waitress kept waving at us on her way to another table. Finally a waiter (Vinny) came in all rushed and made his way to our table and proceeded to tell us that his car had broken down. His next three trips by were excuses about not having any bread to serve and when the basket finally arrived there were four very small pieces of room temperature bread. It took right at an hour and ten minutes for our food to arrive. Would seem a little on the unacceptable side for such a small place with so few patrons that night. The food was mediocre at best. Very little "italian restaurant" flavors in any of the dishes. No apologies for the wait from anyone. Would definitely be a place we won't return.
Great food. Gravy was some of the best I have had. Only issue was that they were short handed but the staff provided excellent service given the limitations.
Shrimp scampi was unacceptable. Shrimp overcooked and tough. Sauce was watered down and salty. Sent it back to the kitchen. Replaced with lasagna which was ok...but not great. Bill was $80++ Service was stiff...had to ask for wine. Seats need reuphostering. Not at all what we expected based on Trip Advisor ratong.
Great food in a relaxed family atmosphere. Worth the try
Our first visit to LaFontana. Excellent service by Vinnie but the portions sizes were too small and both the red sauce and Alfredo sauce were soupy and not as flavorful as we were expecting. There was very little chicken in the chicken Alfredo entree. If it was wasn't for the excellent wine pours, Italian bread, and superb service we would've been disappointed.
Terrible food. Bread was stale, my tea didn’t even taste right
This was the perfect dining experience for my parents celebrating their 61st Anniversary. The waitress, Robyn was amazing and catered to their special needs. The food was delicious and the ambience was perfect. We look forward to returning.
I love La Fontana! It is a great little Italian restaurant with moderate prices. It is so convenient when my husband and I must visit MUSC and we come in the night before. We hit La Fontana on our way into Charleston. You can usually get a reservation. They are not booked months in advance.
The food was amazing. The service was great and we will definitely be back.
7:15 reservation, by 7:50 we were still not seated. There was one server in the entire restaurant. Not one table had food on it. A couple had bread. So much for celebrating our anniversary there. No covid protocols either.
Terrible service, average food, and expensive prices. They had one server/host for 13 tables... I could go into many, many details, but spare yourself and your wallet and go downtown Charleston for the same price.
Was there a total of 2 1/2 hours. Waited 1 hour to get our salads and when main course arrived it didn’t taste good at all. Was supposed to get a dessert and after waiting 15 mins for it I told waiter to put it in a to go box. 10 mins later he never came back, so after $100.00 later we just left. First time we have been there and it will be our last. Food was very low quality to nasty. We couldn’t even finish half of it.
Terrible service. Good food. Not the same place as it was 5 years ago.
First time here and will never go back. Took a hour to get our food, got bread and oil after about 30 minutes but had to ask for silverware rollups after 40 to finally get napkins. Waiter must've been cooking because we barely saw him on the floor and he rarely checked on us or filled our drinks. Eggplant was mushy, food cold and sauces thick as wallpaper paste, as if sat in window forever. Made a joke of how long it would take to get our box and check and that took at least another 10 minutes after we asked another server passing by. Almost forgot to mention the dried sauce on the wall. Never go here!!!
Our server acted like he was on coke, our food (even the bread) took forever, and everything tasted bland.
We enjoyed the evening very much. The food was great as usual, the server was great in every way and the ambience was perfect for a delicious Italian meal.
Very nice as is usual. See you next time we are in town!
Robyn was an amazing waitress Made the evening special
We usually enjoy eating here. There were three of the four of us that came for the pizza as listed on their online menu. We were informed that pizza was only being prepared for carry out. I don't understand why they couldn't make one for the table. My friend ordered the lasagna and was very disappointed in the serving size. Overall, the whole experience was disappointing.
The prefix menu was not a very good choice for the restaurant Italian food is not raw pokey bowls PJ did not do a very good waiting on us but when Vinny came in he did an excellent job we appreciate that and John came out and said hello hopefully next time we come it will be better We have come to this restaurant for as long as it’s been open we started in North Charleston with them and moved over understand Covid has made things tough and we look forward to a better year
They were short handed on staffing, but really worked hard to provide us service !!
We really enjoyed our experience at la Fontana Italian
This might be the best italian joint in Charleston, no joke. This is a no frills joint, just good service and great food at a great value. The dishes are simple and delicious. As of covid 2020, they haven't been serving alcohol, so you get to save some extra cash by bringing your own bottle of wine. They don't charge a corking fee. ENJOY THIS NEIGHBORHOOD TREASURE!
Service was not good, food was awful and took forever! And they didn’t have a current liquor license so they couldn’t serve alcohol
Had to give it poor review due to the fact that we went for our first date night in months, (due to Covid-19) . We got there and asked for a wine menu to have a nice bottle of wine with our dinner and was told that they were waiting to get they’re liquor license back and could not serve any alcohol. We decided not to stay and eat, it just wasn’t the kind of night we had hoped to have, you know, drinking water with a nice Italian meal. And I was looking sooo forward to eating there, it looked so good online. It’s been hard getting out to explore the fine dining in Charleston since we moved here April, so it was a real disappointment . Guess that’s why we were the only ones in the restaurant when we got there.
Very nice waitress. Food took longer than usual. Will return.
They had lost their liquor license so no wine available. Seats very shabby and torn. Very dark. Would not return, but hostess was very nice.
Great food and service. Looks like a family run establishment and you can tell the home cooking in the food taste!
The place has a musty, old, wet smell. Very old and did not seem the cleanest. The waitress was not that attentive. Food was ok but nothing to rave about.
We used to love going there, and took carry-out during the shutdown. But, after getting seated and ordering we found that they didn't have a liquor license in place. We were severely disappointed and left. Now looking for a new "go to" Italian restaurant/
was wonderful experience. Only disappointment was could not order glass of wine until they get liquor license
can not wait to go back when can get a glass of wine with my meal
They lost their liquor license which they did not post not their website so you won't know until you arrive. The size of the mussels appetizer was significantly smaller that last time we were there a year ago. The mussels themselves were small and in an unflavorful sauce.
No liquor license
Best Italian spot I’ve found in Charleston! Amazing food!
Would have the grilled mozzarella sandwich for a lunch. It was an awesome surprise. Food was authentic and delicious.
Authentic Italian meal. Gracious wait staff. Can’t wait to go back.
Food was great, the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. This is a family owned business and they are very friendly people
