Mariachi Mexican Restaurant - Millburn

We were excited to visit Mariachi for the very first time, as it is quite close to our home. We didn't have a good first impression, though, as the first person we met at the door (who also acted as our server) was quite lackluster. There was no smile on the face, didn't feel welcomed. We were the only patrons at the time, and it took him a while to get our order and clean out the other tables. He took his time walking to our table and moving around the restaurant. For every question we asked, we were met with an initial blank look and it took a while for him to respond. The utensils came late, after the first dish (soup for my parents) was served. The soup was not hot, and we asked for a replacement. He looked annoyed that we asked this. The soup that came back had a very hot bowl, but the soup itself was lukewarm.

That said, the rest of the meal was actually quite good and that redeemed our experience at the restaurant. The tacos were good. My dad and I got the crispy tacos (he had ground beef and I had fish), and mom had the regular soft tacos with fish.

My husband wanted fish with his fajitas instead of meat, but he was told they didn't have any salmon to go with it. We requested that they use the tilapia (which went with our fish tacos) as a replacement, but was told the chef would not use tilapia. We thought this was strange, as every other Mexican place did not have a problem serving tilapia with fajitas. He ended up just getting vegetable fajitas - he said the dish was ok.

We are planning to visit Mariachi at another occasion, to see if the service would be different with other servers, but this will not be any time soon. We would recommend the place for the standard items.
Am hoping this review will help the restaurant to train their staff better, and perhaps be a bit more flexible in terms of guests' requests.

Adorable and cozy Mexican with the best chili rellenos I've ever had. Great guoc and lobster enchiladas. What I really like is that everything is fresh and not dripping in cheese and sauce. Very friendly service. Music was a bit loud but I'll be going back! Don't forget to BYOB!

Amazing food, service and ambiance

Excellent Mexican food (I am from California and this is got to be one of the best I've found on this coast thus far!). Very fresh! Wonderful presentation and the ambiance was vibrantly colorful! You can bring your own margaritas and they provide an authentic margarita glass rimmed with chili and salt! Absolutely FESTIVE! I will definitely be back soon!

Ole. Wonderful place great fresh food. Place us delightfully colorful. Tacos are crispy and delicious. Flan is life changing.

Excellent Food & Service!

Waited half hour .. after making open table reservation... the host literally disappeared for 20 minutes.

Great new place in town !

Very good food and very good service during dinner with my family on New Year’s Eve. Would rank above Red Cadillac (Union) and River & Rail (Cranford). Did not experience any of the issues noted by others. Give it a try!

It was great! We all loved our food and the timing and service and ambiance were excellent.

The food is ok. Not a great value as the prices are a lot for what you get.

Food and service were excellent. They have only been open a month. Great little place in Millburn. Hope they do well.

Average Mexican at best.

We arrived at 7:25pm for our reservation and they would not honor our 7:30pm reservation for 8 people stating that they no longer take open table on the weekends. They said they have a wait and it would be 45 for a table. I showed them our confirmation and asked to speak to a manager. The manager would not come out to speak to us.

I’ve been to the location in Metuchen and brought friends to try this location. The decor is great and we were lucky to be seated in a small back room, away from all the noise. My husband ordered his usual enchiladas and was not asked which sauce he wanted. It came to the table with green sauce and when he took a bite, it was very spicy. He didn’t eat it and didn’t complain to our waitress, who very rarely came by our table. When we told the manager about it he graciously took the meal off the bill. I ordered a shrimp with onions and peppers. When I asked the waitress the size of the shrimp, she said regular - not an answer. In addition, the dish was tasteless. Our friend had tacos and said they were OK, nothing special.

I would suggest people wait a month or so until the wait staff gets their act together. The food is good, however it is so loud. Do NOT go on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday; too many kids and way too much noise.

The restaurant was extremely loud which I believe caused our waitress to get our order wrong - food items weren't what was ordered. The order of nacho's came out soggy, the food was not up to par - very disappointed.
