Monks on the Commons
We really liked the setting. Quiet, pleasant. Value was good, caught some happy hour by chance. Cocktails were both excellent. Appetizer was terrific. Entrees were good, but not quite on the same level. Good, focused wine and cider list. Would return.
Everyone is so nice! Food is VERY good too
The service for breakfast was terrible. The waitress complained to her co-worker in front of our face about our changing the reservation to an earlier time via OpenTable. When taking our orders, she was very curt and had a frown. We did not get water for the table. After we asked for water, we not receive the water until just before we received our check. It took 30 minutes to get our meal. They “forgot” one of our orders because the waitress said she didn’t hear us. Other than the omelette, the rest of our food (Belgium waffles, avocado toast, Eggs Benedict) came out cold.
This was in contrast to other experiences we’ve had at the restaurant in the past where although the food was fair and the service decent. From start to finish we did not feel welcomed this morning. When charging these types of prices, rudeness is unacceptable.
Had dinner and lunch here. Dinner was far better in both food and service.
We were very disappointed with the food and service. I think this reflects poorly on the management of the restaurant and NOT on the wait staff (the person performing 'bus' service was exceptional). I think the wait staff was overwhelmed and I saw the supervisor on the floor only once.
I've stayed and dined at many Marriott branded hotels on four continents and our experience at Monks was way below the standards we expect from Marriott. This is the first time I am writing such a poor review about a Marriott branded establishment. I am doing so, however, because I think highly of the brand and our experience Monks was a very poor reflection on Marriott. I cannot, in good conscience, recommend the hotel or Monks.
In closing, my knowledge informs me that our experience on 11/29 was more a reflection on the management of the establishment and not on the kitchen or wait staff.
Had a nice time. Essentially, an upscale sports bar with football on tv’s everywhere. I had a good hamburger and my wife good chicken tenders. It was loud and busy. Very good service, but not a special occasion setting.
Our server John was a saint! The menu is limited but everything we tried was good.
The waitress was very sweet and accommodating. The food was meh at best.
Very good food. Open atmosphere. Great service. Better than expected.
They were out of steak And pasta!
Only giving fours stars because one of the waitresses (for some reason there were two helping us) was a little rude saying:
-Are you two behaving? I hear too many laughs here (we each had only 2 drinks)
-I know how to manage this (when my friend had to change cards and was trying to put it into the card holder)
Monks was fantastic! The service and specials were great. We'll be back.. Thank you.
We typically go there for Brunch and evening drinks. The food is always really good and the portions are worth your money. The drinks are delicious though a bit pricey. The staff is phenomenal and a great place to hang out.
We had excellent service and a very good meal at Monk’s recently. The salmon was cooked perfectly and the chicken breast was very moist with a tasty sauce.
Had a great experience at Monks. Our server was very attentive and the food came out very quickly.
Great food, great location, great ambiance!
For our Valentine's Day dinner, this was a very nice meal. They had a special menu that didn't have a vegan option so after asking for the regular menu, we enjoyed a wonderful meal. The food was presented beautifully and tasted with great flavors. The server was attentive and very helpful. A great choice!
Monks was one of the few places in Ithaca where I could secure a normal dinner time reservation, so while I was grateful for that and after I checked out the menu with some great sounding entrees, we were disappointed to learn upon being seated that there was only a special valentine’s day menu. The host sensed our disappointment and provided us regular menus, but from that moment, on we were treated as outcasts. We each ordered a small salad ($6) and salmon entree ($27), totaling what most of the Valentine’s Day special provided-a salad and entree fo $33, but our waitress made it known that we were not meeting her expectations. At one point of our mea, nearing when we were finishing our entrees, we noticed that every other table had gotten bread. We had bread plates and our waitress said she’d bring bread after we placed our order, but we just figured it was an oversight. So we asked her and she explained that it accompanied the Valentine’s Day specials. “Do you really want it?” Yes! We replied. We then ordered dessert and on the bill was $1 for bread. Really? What an insult. She never said it would cost $1 and they never indicated that if you didn’t order the Valentine’s Day special, you’d be treated like a second class citizen. What would have otherwise been a nice dinner felt like punishment. A shift in service attitude would be a great support of otherwise good food. Very disappointing-will not be returning-I can get that attitude at the Post Office, thank you.
This was not our first time here, but it was for dinner. As always, the food was great and we had excellent service. They have a nice rotation of "Social Hour" specials from 4-7pm. We ordered 2 appetizer specials (Beef Bulgogi) and a flatbread (special for the night) to share and were full. The drink prices are a bit pricey compared to other bars/restaurants in the area, but they were strong and you might be paying a little for the ambiance.
Just great .
Kelsey did a great job serving us but the food was disappointing. The salmon and the lobster were good but the Brussels sprout sauté had a weird off-flavor.
Great server, great food.
I thought the food was pricey for what you got. We had some trouble with an order (not prepared the way it was on the menu), and it was brunch and our eggs were undercooked.
We were first time visitors to Monks. The atmosphere and food were marvelous and the service was top notch. It was a lively venue so anyone with a hearing impairment mind find it a little difficult to converse, but other than that I would recommend it to all ages and food palates. We had reservations for our Friday evening and it was a good thing we did as there were a good number of people waiting for seating. Clearly a popular place!
The grilled cauliflower appetizer was outstanding. My wife and I had salads and they were both outstanding. Very good experience all around.
Food was great, service was horrible. Waited a long time for drink order, food took a long time and then part of one order was forgotten. Although the waitress apologized for the error, no compensation was offered.
The restaurant is located on the ground floor of the Ithaca Marriott and offers an outside dining area. We ordered the cauliflower wings appetizer, which would have been better without so much korean barbecue sauce. The burger BIG and very good. We were disappointed in the salmon entree ($30+); it didn't jive with the menu description at all.
Flatbread was soggy, 'medium burger was virtually raw. Very noisy with a party going on in bar area, but that is probably not the norm.
Delicious and good quality food, very kind staff!
Awesome food, customer service
