Monster Kitchen & Bar
smoked goat's curd, katsuobushi, sesame
pickled quince, walnut
pickled shitake, bonito soy, spring onion oil, sesame
What a funky location and great food. Slight Japanese infusion to many of the food options. We also really enjoyed the wines that were on a very small wine list.
Despite our confirmed reservation they didn’t have a table for us as they had taken other diners in. They sent us to the bar for a drink. The wine list is outrageously overpriced.
The waiter didn’t know what the specials were and when asked how the fish was cooked ie fried grilled etc he said “we’ll find of course”.
Very very limited menu.
Pasta was ok
Beautiful setting. Spent too much on decor and not enough on menu and staff training.
Service was amazing, food delicious and great value for money
We loved our dinner! Service was great and atmosphere was lovely!
I like dinning out but do not like post activity surveys.
Very busy & noisy atmosphere, very good quality food but as we were a table of eight we had to eat in two sittings as the kitchen could not handle 8 of us ordering a la carte. best to go early or late for dinner.
We booked and arrived for 1045am to be told that breakfast finishes at 1030am and the kitchen was closed. The menu and booking confirmation states 12pm.
If the kitchen was going to close early, we should have been notified not when we arrived and had paid for parking.
We were most looking forward to coming esp as we were from out of town.
We will not be coming again.
It took 35 minutes to have our order taken after receiving our menus. Then we didn't receive any drinks until I asked after we were given our entrees. The food was not amazing for the price.
Staff were super knowledgeable and great loved the food and atmosphere too
The 8 course set menu was great. An excellent combination of seafood, vegetarian and meat dishes. They were able to easily switch a couple of dishes due to dietary requirements. We were all very satisfied (full)!
The wine service was poor. We got given a menu but then no one came to take an order for quite a long time. After asking to order and getting a nice Chardonnay (it’s a very good wine list by the way) we were not served for drink again, despite empty glasses. I asked if we could buy another bottle, it was served and then no one visited again to top up glasses. I had to go to a side table to grab the bottle and top up our glasses.
Another annoying aspect of the night was that they were setting up the restaurant space for hotel buffet breakfasts while we were still dining nearby! This certainly made the evening feel a bit “unspecial”.
Great dining experience with friends.
Definitely coming back!!!
We love Monster for the amazing variety of great dishes on offer and, just like Ovo Nishi itself, the dishes are often a little different and quirky - but always prepared to perfection. This time round we went for the degustation with matched wines - fantastic food and great value!
Great room with interesting decor and outlook. Service was pleasant and food most enjoyable for brunch.
The food was delicious with a great range of veggo options (a rarity in a restaurant which also prides itself on the meat dishes). The service was attentive and helpful. The food was beautifully presented and interesting with wonderful flavour combinations.
We booked for 8 and didn’t get seated till 8:40 then ordered straight away and got out food at 10.30.
Food was very interesting but was a little overdone.
Was a busy night for them but the quality just wasn’t what I’ve had in previous experiences.
Really nice and attentive staff.
Food quality , presentation and taste, is as expected, which is good. The deception was the wait between courses, probably around 45 minutes for us, which is excrutiatinglly long. We got many apologies when we raised the subject but somehow, this damaged the experience. Also, access is not easy, car parking is an issue in the area, we turn around carparks for 20minutes for a space.
Wonderful service coupled with an imaginative menu, great dishes lead to a totally enjoyable evening at Monster Kitchen & Bar. Totally recommended for a great evening out.
Service, venue and wine were wonderful, unfortunately the food was not up to the standard we expected. We had the tasting menu and the cigars were chewy and tasteless, prawn gyoza was overcooked and tough with underwhelming flavour, croquette was not flavourful and seem undercooked in the middle and the steak main was very basic flavour wise and did not pair well with the beetroot relish.
Monster is fabulous and has wonderful food, bar and ambience. The only problem we had (and it was a very minor one - would have given a half star if I could), was that the food and wine pairings didn't line up. The wine usually came out after the food (in some cases, a while after the food) and since the courses were quite small, we finished the food quickly and didn't actually get to try them together, which is really the point of food and wine matching. I would have liked to have heard a little about the wine too, as my friends and i are keen wine people, but the waiter (not sommelier, who was busy I think?) didn't really know much about them. Also the desserts didn't divide well when doing the tasting menu, which became a little weird with multiple people eating directly from the same plate.
In general though the meal was fantastic and we had a very enjoyable evening. Really appreciated being seated at a round table to so we could all talk as a group during the meal - this was a very pleasant surprise, thank you!
Great service, good attention to detail, and very good quality food. The duck/rhubarb dish is a knockout!
As a quiet, wet Sunday brunch it was very pleasant. Very few other patrons so noise was not a problem. Meals were well presented and flavorsome. Adjourned to the lounge for a continuation of the moment.
Great service, innovative menu, hip ambience, fun, cool.
Food was very good though serves were small. Best value was the express menu for lunch
Exquisitely wonderful. Yummie beyond words. Staff friendly and helpful. We were welcomed as Family.
We dined early, 5.30 on a Monday evening, so it was easy to get a table, and of course the service was excellent, including the promptness of the food. The ambience was pleasant and interesting (although somewhat unsightly was a kitchenhand wheeling a big black bin back and forth outside the otherwise charming view through the window). The food was excellent.
Great decor, modern and delicious food. The music was a bit odd - Metallica, 80s hits and then jazz? But overall a really terrific meal and family friendly.
My hubby and I went to Monster Restaurant for our 10 year wedding anniversary. It was a really lovely atmosphere and the food was outstanding! The only thing that would need improving is the white leather bench seat around the fire pit. So many icky looking stains from drinks glasses and split food. If this was tidied up I would have given it 5 stars.
Waiter could not find our booking.
Service was slow.
Menu variety was limited and priced on the high side.
I probably wont be rushing back there any time soon
My daughters and I really enjoyed our meal here while we were visiting Canberra. The Beetroot and Goats cheese starter was a highlight for my eldest, the kingfish for me and the churros for my youngest. Great ambiance and friendly service.
Incredibly ill informed staff, meal was prepared three times before they got it right , expected a lot more
This is a review of the 'kitchen' part of the place — we were there for dinner, in the restaurant kind of room.
We were a bit perturbed from the start, when we stood at the entrance for quite a few minutes with no apparent interest from staff. After that, staff were mostly good, though variable — eg one not knowledgeable about the food.
We had the shared degustation menu.
Some dishes were great (miso glazed eggplant, house made ice cream), some fine but unexceptional (oysters, asparagus), some poorly executed (tough uninteresting duck breast, uninteresting croquette).
One was bad: pieces of dry undercooked carrot stuck into an oversweetened black paste. We did not finish them.
Each of these menu items seemed to be a probably well-designed dish, but with execution ranging from good through to terrible.
The decor and feeling of the room was excellent: quiet ambience, good music selection, comfortable seats. So, we had a good time despite the food.
NB: We went 30 December, lateish in the evening, so maybe not representative. But hey, if they are going to be open for dinner, they should be able to serve good food.
superb venue. food was great. lots of intimate couples like us, but also large groups and even family groups for the Xmas period. no problem. the atmosphere, service and food exceptional. catered for our vegan diner effortlessly.
We were really looking forward to our dining experience however over the Xmas-new year period the restaurant was located in the tiny area just off the bar, which would have been fine if the food & service was as our expectations.
Unfortunately the service was really missing. Including taking our order and bringing our drinks without being prompted.
I am sorry to say that our experience was not great at all, but the hotel stay was great.
We arrived to the restaurant being only half in use. Fully aware that the holiday period is a notably quieter time, it would have been nice to know ahead as we were looking forward to the broader menu.
The overall service of the night was slow and disorganised.
We had a great experience which was due to the beautiful ambience plus the courteous staff and the good quality of food . The service was really good and the desert was the icing on the cake. Will definitely recommend to others and will surely come back for more :)
We celebrated a birthday and year 12 graduation with dinner at Monster, and it was a delightful occasion. The staff were attentive and the food was sensational. It was especially unusual and pleasing to celebrate a December birthday without Christmas decorations and music dominating the environment! Highly recommended for any occasion.
We have been to Monster Kitchen and bar 4 or 5 times over the past 5 years (the last time 2 years ago) and it has been a Canberra favourite, but it was very obvious something had changed. The food was not as good and the wine was ridiculously expensive. But the service was terrible. We had a waitress who promised to make a dish gluten free by putting a sauce on the side - that didn't happen. When I told a waiter I didn't want my glass topped up with wine he ignored my request and later we were served wine from another table's carafe . We told the waiter that our carafe was already finished, he said no and continued pouring. Another staff member then came up and said yes we were right and it was someone else's wine.
It used to be a special place - at that price we won't go again. In Adelaide we get exceptional service for similar priced restaurants.
The food is consistently delicious - no matter what we order. I think it is my favourite restaurant in Canberra, which is a big call in a foodie haven like the ACT!!!
Food was great, though I missed the Prosecco mussels which has been taken off the menu. Service was also better last time.
desert menu is thin. more sorbets than needed. shame blinds have to be down. but the food was exceptional.
