Oak & Grain at Inn at Pleasant Lake

The Inn is beautiful. The food was fantastic. There are a lot of decent family restaurants in Sunapee but there are not a lot of fine dining restaurants. We were pleasantly surprised with the quality of the food! The Chef came out to chat with us and check on the food. We enjoyed it immensely and look forward to the next time we are in the he area.
Thanks for your rating, Maribeth. We're glad you enjoyed everything so much and shared your comments on the evening. We look forward to your next visit.
This was a rare dining experience when all five courses (and surprises before and after) were without flaw.
Thanks for your rating, Jack. We're glad you enjoyed everything. We look forward to your next visit.
The food was outstanding especially the Fillet of Beef. A bit more food for the appetizer and soup would have made it perfect. Thank you for the opportunity to dine on local food!
Thanks for your rating, Linda. We're glad you enjoyed everything. We appreciate your feedback. While it is very rare in restaurants, we do encourage our guests to ask for more soup and appetizers if they so desire. We are happy to provide! TASters of other entrees as well. We want you to experience the food fully. We look forward to your next visit.
Everything was superb. Only one tiny complaint ... there was no limoncello to have with my panna cotta.
Thanks for your thoughts and feedback, Wanda. We will consider your suggestion in our beverage program updates! We look forward to your next visit.
It is a lovely spot, the food is amazing, I always love the chefs speech. The service from all the staff and the bartender is very professional and genuine! Everything was prepared to perfection. I would like the evening to be a bit shorter, and a little less expensive, that would be my only suggestion.
Thanks for your thoughts Anne. We're glad you enjoyed everything. We do offer a shorter 3-course service in the winter months (mid Nov - mid May) on Wed, Thurs, Sun. It does cost us a bit more than most restaurants to provide farm to table ingredients that support our local farmers. We hope our guests find the quality and freshness with the price. We look forward to your next visit.
The 5 course meal was delicious
Thanks for your rating. We're glad you enjoyed everything. We look forward to your next visit.
Fantastic setting, fantastic food, fantastic service!
Wow, 3x fantastic. Thanks so much for such high praise. We are so glad you enjoyed your experience.
I’d only gave it a 3 for ambiance. Nice view of the lake, but the dining room was dull and quite noisy. I had a hard time hearing. I would strongly recommend that they put rugs on the floors.
Service would get a 4. Although serving was efficient, they neglected to ask if we wanted the wine pairing at the beginning, even after we requested a wine list, which we had to request 2x.
Food: I though the soup, lamb and dessert were delicious, but that the salad was lacking. Not enough beets and mozzarella and greens were on the bitter side.
Value: Gave it a 4. I thought food was fairly priced; however, I thought the wines pairing was grossly overpriced, as was my Pinot.
We're pleased you generally enjoyed dinner. On decor, we opted for a minimalist approach with focus on the table/food, views, and the micro-gallery to help support our local art community. We did have sound dampening panels installed on the ceiling which help a lot. Our wine pairing is designed for match with food flavors, and provide access to wines that would otherwise be hard to find by the glass. We do have a range of options that meet most price points. Will review service. Thanks!
Oak and Grain is an experience not just a meal. Chef comes out before the meal and describes the menu including where it is sourced and how it’s prepared. Food is locally sourced and prepared to perfection. There is a choice of entree in the tasting menu. There is always a vegetarian option and Chef is creative with allergies. The wine pairings were excellent. Ambiance in the Inn is cozy and comfortable. Service is attentive and friendly. This is the best restaurant in the area
I want to give huge kudos for the staff at Oak & Grain. We have a service animal, and they made sure to make us feel equally welcomed as any other guests. Seems like a silly thing to point out, but it sure meant a lot to us. I’m also severely allergic to seafood and the chef made sure not only to exclude all allergens, but to substitute problematic ingredients with equally delicious ones. Didn’t feel like I missed out on anything, absolutely superb. Friendly staff, warm atmosphere, a wonderful visit to NH topped off by a culinary experience. Thank you for making a family weekend that much more special.
The food was ok, but the precious rest is completely unnecessary. Dispense with the presentation, and serve the food hot. Also, when you seat everyone at the same time, there’s no way to spread the service load, and it shows.
Three hours to eat dinner in a noisy crowded dining room is not going to do it. Especially at those prices. Spread out the reservations!!!!
Neal - So sorry your expectations were not met. We do offer a 3- course format on Wed, Thur, Sun - seating from 5:30 - 9:00, no presentation. Perhaps more in line with the experience you were hoping for. Our 5-course signature dinner is our most popular (Fri - Sat in winter; Wed - Sun summer) We hope our OT descriptions help new guests understand our format is not typical. It is a relaxed experience. Your table is yours for the evening to enjoy all the flavors, and engage with the chef
Nothing short of amazing. Incredible meal and experience, top notch service and we got to meet the chef as well. Wild
Mushroom ragout was out of this world and the filet Mignon was cooked to perfection.
So glad you enjoyed you dining experience with us. We hope to see you again soon!
A very special evening.
So glad you enjoyed your experience!
We went here for our anniversary. It was a great experience start to finish. The chef is very personable and puts on a great show as he explains everything about the meal and all the fresh ingredients. He then follows through with a great five course meal.
Happy Anniversary! Thanks so much for your review and for allowing us to contribute to your celebration!
Amazing best dinner
Thanks SO much for your feedback. We hope to see you again soon!
Had some of the best meals of my life here over the last 8 years. However that was under the prior chef/ owner Brian McKenzie. The Inn changed hands about 3 years ago and this is a different chef now. The food is fair but just not at the level it was previously. We tried dinner under the new chef 3 times now since the changeover, but found it average each time. It is just too expensive for the quality now in my opinion. Dinner for two with two drinks each will set you back about $215.00. Love the Inn though, great place to stay though, just probably won't do dinner again in the future.
Scott – We thank you for your loyalty over the years. It was never our intent when finding a successor for Chef MacKenzie, to replicate his style, as each chef has his own unique style. Chef Leary brings a broad diversity of experience to craft authentic New England cuisine. He does seem to be gaining a wonderful following of dedicated guests that appreciate the flavors he is able to craft. We truly value our loyal guests who have come to appreciate Chef Leary’s talents.
A truly memorable dining experience. This is a full evening. They offer one seating with set menu per evening. The chef comes out at about 7:00 to describe the evening's offerings. He is informative and entertaining. The food and service are fabulous.
Two more points:
1. It is very expensive.
2. I recommend trying his wine pairings. He really knows what he is doing.
Thanks Thomas. We appreciate your recommendation. It does take a bit more effort (and cost) to generate a custom menu each day almost entirely from local sources, but we hope our guests recognize the quality and flavors, along with chef's talents, as you have here. Our goal is to delight our guests and make sure they feel the experience is well worth the price. Thanks so much.
The general ambience was exceptionally nice and quiet for the occasion, with lake view and extremely pleasant support staff and energetic chef on Pleasant Lake!
Thanks for your feedback
A perfect dining experience in every way. Country inn setting. Creative menu locally sourced. Excellent preparation. And all introduced by the inspired and interesting chef. So memorable.
Delightful and quiet classic New England inn on a beautiful lake.
Personal service and a fresh fire in the fireplace, followed by well prepared appetizers, perfect tuna, and lemony dessert. Very nice wine pairings too.
Dinner was beautifully presented and served. A most enjoyable evening!
Years ago, I asked a professional friend of mine, where should I take my wife for our anniversary - what is a very special and unique place? He immediately named the restaurant at the Inn at Pleasant Lake. We have been going ever since and its tops on our list for a special occasion meal, either for a romantic occasion or a business partners celebration.
If you arrive at 6:15, which is when they start receiving dining guests for Saturday night supper, expect about 45 minutes of mingling before the chef arrives to talk about the meals he has prepared. The venue encourages mingling among the other diners before the chef's arrival. Then, he will address the whole room full of eager diners. He describes in detail the process of making the food you are about to eat for about 15 minutes. Then you are ushered to your tables.
If you're a real introvert, I might arrive closer to 6:45 to minimize the amount of mingling, but you don't want to arrive too late because they take your order during the cocktail hour.
Even for introverts, the food, which is truly a cut above, is still well worth the awkward conversation with strangers.
