Ortega's A Mexican Bistro
Food and service was very good, time of visit was relatively busy with a public event going on, but I would rate it as one of my favorite restaurants!
I would recommend it for the price but the food wasn’t the best and the service was a bit slow
Last time I was here was 7 years ago with friends. And I don’t remember the taste of the food anymore, but today; everything is on the sweet side and it’s over powering so is my husband food. The service was alright. Kinna slow. Have to flag down our waiter couples of time. Probably not coming back here.
Diverse menu, attentive service, high quality entrees and desserts; average of $50 per person including appetizer, drink, entree and desert-good value!
Very relaxed dining experience. Our waiter was very attentive and made sure all refills were promptly addressed. Table-side guacamole was fantastic, as was the tortilla soup!
Lobster was well worth it - very fresh and well-prepared.
Many other menu selections that I will be back to try!
Food was great. They brought out the wrong dish but once I brought to their attention they quickly brought out the correct dish. Excellent service
First, the coffee had a rich flavor with a nice mild cinnamon flavor. 2nd, We ordered the wonderful Queso Fundido with 3 Cheeses and Chorizo & Peppers, Incredible. 3rd, we both had a flavorful Chiliquiles with fresh corn and flour tortillas, Amazing! Tableside Guacamole is always welcome and worth it. Will return!
We come down from Oceanside to Ortega's for a special occasion. My wife absolutely loves the Baja style lobster. The service was very good and so was the lobster. We've been there 3 times on a Saturday early evening and the restaurant was not busy. Can't talk about what else is on the menu because we don't even look at it. The freshly made tortillas are delicious. The main problem in the Hillside area is the parking. It can really put a damper on things looking for a place. Ortega's does not have it's own parking. We went into a city lot across the street, put in a credit card for 3 hours and it was $5 per hr for a total of $15 for parking for Ortega's. However, our lobster was delicious.
We were early, just after 5:00 PM reservations, due to theater time start, so had to hit early dinner. So staff was still minimal and a bit lacking in attention...but the food and beverages are always great!! Just mark this bleep as due to early dinner hour!! All very friendly and pleasant!! We'll be back!
We came for a birthday and there was a note made on the reservation when the reservation was made however, it was not brought to the attention of the table and there was not a celebratory offering to the birthday boy. I don't know if Ortega's has a policy where they don't offer something for birthdays but I was hoping something for the birthday boy himself and we ended up leaving without an acknowledgement from the restaurant or even a happy birthday.
The restaurant is a delicious spot. I have eaten here before multiple times. They have delicious margaritas, a wonderful menu, and an incredible happy hour but I would make sure you let the staff know in case they did not see the note you make when placing the reservation through opentable.
Very nice place, great food, good service. Will go back!
Good food and good service. Cute atmosphere. We will go back.
I really loved the atmosphere it was super authentic, the salsa was amazing and so were the drinks, the food was fair, the pork had a overwhelming taste of cinnamon or nutmeg I liked the shrimp tacos the food is really pretty, the service was great everyone was friendly.
So I really like this place...good food and friendly staff. You have the option to either site outside and people watch on University Ave or sit inside. I guess the only thing that puzzles me is that the place is never busy? But is that really a complaint?
It was 8 pm on Saturday night and the place was dead. Maybe that's why the service was excellent, but the food was nothing to write home about at all. Its my second visit, so I sampled a few vegetarian dishes, and frankly, they all tasted the same. Its not terrible food at all, just very uninspired and bland.
The famous pomegranate margarita tasted like a 5$ HH special. Very disappointing. Hillcrest has hundreds of great restaurants, so I can;t imagine how Ortega's stays in business. I hear they do have amazing brunch, but given my 2 dinners here, I'll go to Chocolate or Fig Tree instead.
Great ambiance. Food pretty good. But sat for a really really long time with no waiter! One guy breezed past me multiple times. Finally the bartender came over! What??? Honestly was not great enough food to return. Sorry to say because some staff were quite nice. Service seemed a bit chaotic and place was not busy at 7pm.
Incredible food and service, our go to place when in San Diego.
Soooo good! Ortega's Mex Bistro is a cool place, the service is wonderful and the food is noteworthy. Our server, Jonathan, steered us well beginning with a nice mango and lime refreshment, and beers, and on through to the main events. One of the best seafood dishes in the city (& that's saying something) is the Huachinango - plantain crusted grilled pacific snapper. The lovely side vegetables and beans were the perfect accompaniment.
Food was good. Took 30mins for them to figure out the bill. Wont be rushing back anytime soon.
Food is always great here. We keep coming back - one of our absolute favorites!
We go there every mother's day for at least 10 years because the service and everything i-5 stared is true. I love the way they treat you they always have a special. It's kind of like going to Fernando's hideaway. Like you're the only one who knows about this place. The food is awesome. I will continue to recommend and I also will continue going to Ortega's for really really fine fine double fine food.
Warm regards, Tony Margiotta
It’s a spiritual experience everyone should have once before they leave the planet
Wonderful lobster! Cooked perfectly! Parking a little tough. Oh! And the homemade tortillas are to die for!
Cadillac margarita tasted very bland and I asked to make sure that was what I had ordered . Food was good but I was somewhat disappointed
We had a reservation but arrived 10” early. In spite of there being several tables open and ready for gusts the host made us wait until our reservation time in spite of seating several other groups who walked in without reservations. That was annoying . However things took a turn for the better as our waiter was cheerful and very attentive and food service was prompt. It was good but not extraordinary . The place looks very tired— I. Need of a redo desperately!
Very friendly staff. Very efficient. The reason for one star less...is that we were seated next to the bar.. little cramped
The service was excellent. Food very good. Would go back without question.
We didn't get the table that we wanted and asked for but everything else was perfect. We have dined at Ortega's for more than 10 years.
Lobster was over-cooked and dry.
Food was delicious, margaritas awesome and the service was great. Wish they were closer to where I live.
Great service. I would rather have more steak for the price, or bring cost down.
Great food, great service. Our party had the lobster and bistek, crab enchiladas, shrimp tacos, and Carnitas. The food was excellent. We will definitely return. We highly recommend Ortega's.
I LOVE Puerto Nuevo Style Lobster dinner and Ortega's does an excellent job. I choose the Lobster and Shrimp. Very generous portions of the lobster and shrimp. The seasoning on the shrimp is delicious and the rice is just perfect, not dry, not soggy, just perfect. All around a fabulous dinner and my favorite at Ortegas
Fantastic food, nice crowd, great server - even caught from my order that I am eating 'keto' style and adjusted my order accordingly, telling me the ingredients in parts of my meal as he brought them out so I would know if I wanted to eat them or not.
Great food, atmosphere and service, don't miss the chance to eat here 😎
They treated us great and the service was too. The lobster and steak special for $26.95 is incredible. Thank you!!
If there were better parking we would frequent this place more
Lobster, Puerto Nuevo Style, did not disappoint! Really good!!
Pomegranate margaritas and churros to top it off! Woo hoo!!
Food was very good. I was surprised that it was so empty on a Wednesday night, I think only 2 other tables. But the food was quite tasty (the chips and salsa were excellent too).
