Saldo, California, 2016
Classic Caesar Salad
Croutons, shaved parmesan, anchovies
Classic Wild Mushroom Risotto
Wild mushrooms, Arborio rice, winter truffle, Parmigiano Reggiano
We had the scallops which were great along with the Daou Cab which is always superb.
The food was just mediocre for Northern California. It was not Italian or French specifically and had some sweet sauces that were just Mediterranean, but did not fit with the dishes. There was a hummus on the menu. The owner came to say “hi”, but then, we saw him “saying hi” at the Mediterranean restaurant a block away. I’d expect cleaner pallet for this price range and better wine.
I've had this restaurant bookmarked for quite some time. So delighted to finally try it out. The ambience was wonderful, service was fantastic, and the food... delicious!
We celebrated a friend’s 50th. It was a delicious and memorable experience!
My husband and I had a most delightful dinner experience here. The ambiance is charming, the staff attentive and the food is outstanding! We ordered off the starter menu and had the Roasted corn and crab bisque soup, Grilled Jumbo prawns, and Jumbo Lobster ravioli... Heaven! And finished with
Cappuccino and warm
Apple tartan with walnuts and raisins, topped with salted caramel ice cream.
Food was great, service was not. Celebrating a momentous birthday and Portabella just had disjointed service night.
The service was fine until we were ready to leave and it took a while for us to cash out. The food was terrible. The bisque was good but everything else we ordered was underwhelming. The prawns were over cooked, the lobster ravioli was horrible and the mussels were very gritty.
What a delightful ambiance & wonderful staff. Loved sitting on the front patio surrounded by flowering plants. Super charming building & stone patio. Both the mushroom soup and the crab & corn bisque were outstanding. The scallops served with the risotto were cooked to perfection. I was surprised by the carbonara, it was rather bland. The portion was very large. I would recommend reducing the size of the portion & working on an authentic tasty carbonara sauce. Then I would give five stars for sure!!
Good basic Italian comfort food. Service OK, food good.
It was okay nice place for dinner lamb dish was great wine selection was okay .
One of our perennial favourites, PortaBella is indeed a haven for dog owners and is blessed with ample patio space. Distancing no problem. Best Salmon Caeser on Ocean Avenue with oodles of anchovies and nice dressing. Burgers too. Appropriate wine menu; good mix of domestic and European wines.
I have a problem with Open Table reservations. Every time I reserve on Open Table I end up getting the worse table in the restaurant next to the kitchen or the bathroom. This has happened twice in this restaurant now. It’s very annoying.
Beautiful place. Great food. Attentive staff. Quiet
Fabulous food! Safe outdoor setting. Everything was perfect.
Incredible food with a fairytale setting. Thank you for making our birthday vacation so special.
This was one of my favorite dining experiences ever. It was perfect... table, waiter, food and drink!! The two soups I ordered for our family were superbe and the veggie croque monsieur is something I will dream about until I can return. One of the wait staff mentioned that her favorite dessert was the bread pudding and I loved it also !
Excellent spot with a convenient and beautiful outside park let! Safe, spread out, and great food.
Excellent dining experience!
The food was amazing! And we loved the ambience. Staff was super friendly.
Excellent food and helpful servers. Great adaptation to the Covid protocols.
Outstanding food and service. While we had to eat outside due to Covid We were plenty warm with heated lamps. The lamb and king salmon were delicious
The food was good, but not great. For example, overcooked carrots were typical of the quality.
This was everything you could hope for. Beautiful setting outside, amazing waitress very attentive, a nice visit from the owner, and fabulous food. This place checks all the boxes. It would be a mistake to miss it!
We are locals and decided to take our elderly friend to Portabellas for her first lunch out in months during COVID. I requested an "inside" table in their pergola area because eating outside with so many people walking by would not be appealing nor safe for her. They accommodated us without blinking an eye. That day was very warm but it was very comfortable where we were sitting with a lot of cross breezes from the open doors and the open rooftop. Our entrees were perfect. I must say that my risotto with wild mushrooms was perfection. The three of us were not rushed to leave and spent a very pleasant few hours reconnecting. Thank you for making our friend so happy!
Entire evening from our arrival to departure was so perfect. The service is outstanding, live music to serenade us while enjoying fantastic soups and pasta!
just ok! would not recommend grilled octopus appetizer as surrounding tables agreed. came out cold and rubbery with no flavor.
Very much enjoyed our dining experience. The food was very good, the service was gracious, and we even were greeted by the owner. Since this was outdoor dining due to Covid we were seated by the street which was fun but a bit noisy - didn't mind much as the people watching was quite enjoyable.
Had a great meal at PortaBella! Will certainly be back.
Food is well prepared and served hot (which has been a challenge with outdoor dining )
Wines by the glass selections are very limited . Wish they would increase their Italian whites by the glass.
Their Aperol Spritz was the best I’ve had outside of Italy!
Enjoyed a nice lunch at a quiet table out front. Wait staff wear masks and gloves due to the pandemic, and there’s a reasonable amount of spacing between tables. Guests are required to wear masks, too, unless eating or drinking. All in all, I thought the restaurant was taking reasonable safety precautions.
We each ordered a different soup to start - corn & crab bisque and mushroom soup. Both were excellent. I enjoyed the Monterey Sand Dabs quite a bit. The croque monsieur sandwich was ok, but there are better choices on the menu. We often visit this restaurant when in Carmel, and we’ve never been disappointed. FYI, the restaurant is no longer offering complementary small tastings of baklava.
We ate here last year for our anniversary and enjoyed it so much we had to stop this year again.
Eating at Porta Bella was the best part of our trip to the Carmel area! We loved it so much, we had dinner two out of the four nights we were in town. The food was phenomenal, the staff were attentive, professional and genuinely pleasant. We were fortunate to be seated at a great table, nestled towards the back of the outdoor patio with a beautiful stone wall filled with local plants on one side and a perfect view of the quaint and picturesque shops. Dinner on both nights, exceeded 2 hours as we enjoyed a superior dining experience on every level! From the very first bite of the delicious fresh bread, incredible entrees, unbelievable Creme Brûlée, and meal concluded with the owners recommendation to try the in-house hot tea, which we couldn't get enough of! I highly recommend you make sure to experience Porta Bella when in Carmel, absolutely worth it!
Overall it was good. The service was a little slow but probably because the place was packed. Food was good.Reservation is highly recommended as they were ale to sit us right away when we got there. I would come back again.
We were a little early for our reservation but were seated right away. We were seated outdoors in accordance with pandemic precautions. Unfortunately, the street is on a slope, making the table slopes as well, and the lighting was insufficient to read the menu. There was a propane heater, which kept us warm on a cool Carmel evening.
Food came out pretty quickly after ordering and was very good. Salad was a decent portion size. We enjoyed the live guitarist singing and playing as we ate. And even though we did not order dessert, they brought us a complimentary baklava with a birthday message and song for my wife’s birthday. This was a pleasant surprise.
The staff was really nice however the food was a bit lack luster for me especially with the price. Cocktails were great though.
A the waiters are so nice and kind
Booked for dinner and seated outside on the street, lovely ambience with very cheerful waiters and a guy playing guitar; great food, ordered mushroom soup and steamed mussels in white wine sauce, pan seared scollops with risotto are to die for, pretty busy restaurant, definitely recommend it and book ahead!
A very pleasant evening eating outdoors just off the sidewalk. Good food and good service.
A lovely dining experience.
