Prepkitchen - San Marcos
Very good food, pizza, burgers, charcuterie all excellent. Service great.
Had a wonderful experience! I've been to the Prep Kitchen in San Marcos numerous times and they never disappoint. The service and the food are both wonderful. My favorite are the scallop and salmon dishes.
My husband and I have enjoyed dining here several times and there seems to have been a change in management. It wasn’t busy but plenty of staff running around looking very disorganized. The food was good but not as good as prior times. I hope this was a one-off day, it’s such a nice venue.
We got to the restaurant in time for our reservation. We were asked if we wanted to sit inside or out we said out. The hostess asked us to wait a sec and walked away..a few minutes later we were asked if we had a reservation we said yes gave the last name and again we were asked “inside or out” again we said out. He tells us there is a fly problem outside and suggested we opt for inside and we did. He took us to our table........and there we sat for the next 30 minutes with out a single person coming by to acknowledge our presence. At that point we started looking at back up options assuming someone would be by at some point..:nope! Another 10 minutes later we got up and walked out..:passed the hostess and host who initially treated us when we arrived and neither asked why were were leaving.....cause NO ONE CARED! Will never ever be back there. We’d rather spend our money at places where our business is appreciated
The initial service sucked. The greeter was not inviting. We asked for a kids menu, we never got. We had to ask again. Our server took too long to serve us and then come to find out, she was no longer our server, which turned out to be a good thing. The server that replaced the first server was so much better, more responsive. But unfortunately, the food was just ok. The brussel sprout appetizer was really good, but my husband’s main course, which was the burger, was just ok. The burger that we make at home is so much better.
What I really liked about the place is the look. It has a very modern look.
Our experience at Prep Kitchen was top notch, from the moment we entered the restaurant to the last bite. Robby, the GM, welcomed us and made sure that our experience was enjoyable. The Vitner's plate was outstanding--a definite 'must-order'! The quality of the food is high and the prices are very reasonable. The Wagyu beef (we ordered the top sirloin) literally melts in your mouth. The decor and ambiance is cozy and chic. Definitely will return again when in the San Marcos area.
Found this little gem on Open Table - had brunch - wonderful menu and our food was delicious! Just wish we couldn’t have eaten more as there were several tempting options.
This was my second time eating at prep kitchen. The first time we went it was just fine. This time, not so much! I had called the restaurant in the morning to remind them it was my friends birthday. They said they would note it and look forward to us coming. The waiter had absolutely no idea it was anybody’s birthday! Service was very poor, took forever to get cocktails and food. The food was marginal at best. I got the feeling that there was a lack of caring about service and food. And to top it off, we asked the bill be split three different ways and even that became a disaster. Will not be returning!
We met for brunch, and it was a very pleasant experience. Our waiter was great with plenty of patience for our “special orders.” The short rib hash was delicious! The sofas were not quite comfortable for at least one of us, but overall it was really nice. I would definitely recommend this restaurant and return when I am in the area. The manager was also very friendly and cordial.
Service was poor. Food was overpriced. Wanted to love this place.
Really hard to get to, parking is hard to find. Small portions and the servers seem to want to take our drinks and food while we were still working on enjoying our meal and conversation. That bugs me.
Great restaurant with easy access from parking structure. Can’t praise it enough.
This is my first time at this location for lunch. I was a little disappointed in the menu. The entrees were much too heavy for my friend and I for lunch. We had to order starter salads and ask if we could add protein. We were given chicken that was pretty dry, but we made it work. Probably not a place I would return to for lunch even though we're big fans of Prepkitchen.
We had a perfect Sunday brunch and Cory was in great service and accommodating of my challenging ordering....creating exactly what I wanted and could eat! We will definitely be back.
I was a bit disappointed in Prep Kitchen's food quality and so much so, that I may not return. I ordered the pasta bolognese. The presentation was not great, it actually looked like dog food and the taste wasn't much better. I did let the waiter know and he removed the item from the bill. The appetizers are small but tasty and some other meals that were ordered were decent. I think overall for what you pay the quality of the food could be better. Service, ambiance and drinks were good.
Great service and unique food/drink
Get there early if you want chilaquiles, ran out by 12:30pm.
This was the first time I had been to brunch! Best Chilaquiles ever! The French toast melts in your mouth. Pineapple mimosa was delicious! Service was amazing and I love the background music ambiance and vibe!
Great space. Very warm and welcoming. Staff was friendly and informative, food was cooked perfectly and presented beautifully. I'll be back!
The food was tasty and our service was great. I love the couch decor and everyone is super personable. However, the room was so loud and I do not enjoy listening to pounding techno type music when dining. The music did not seem to fit the restaurant and it wasn’t fitting for dinner music. Something to absorb the loud noise would be great to enable a nice conversation.
5-Star * Dining outdoor on the patio at Prepkitchen San Marcos. Food is exceptional, service was incredible, Prepkitchen Rocks!
This PrepKitchen is part of a new apartment building among a lot of ongoing construction in the Cal State University at San Marcos area. Inviting and comfortable, it was marred by noisy construction work nearby, hampering conversation. Having said that, the staff was apologetic for the noise, friendly and informative. Our party of three enjoyed the fish and chip lunch and a fried chicken sandwich. The fish was excellent, and the batter crisp, crunchy, and tasty. The chicken sandwich was a little too crispy for my taste, but the chicken was moist and topped with an excellent cold slaw. The menu held a variety of dishes, and the drink list was creative. Try it..
A great establishment, unfortunately with a manager who will run this place into the ground. Food is great, servers are great, but oh boy, can't say the same about the manager who comes across as a black hole sucking up positive energy - and it shows.
Service was excellent. Food was decent but portions were modest and overpriced. They also added a surcharge to our bill “in support of the rising minimum wage”. Never seen that before and do not intend to return.
Compared to other Prepkitchens, this location has the high prices but lower quality food. Not very much variety on the menu either.
Third visit and still a treat! Girl's night out and everyone loved it. The salmon over orzo was absolutely delicious, the burgers were huge and yummy, and the mac and cheese - oh my! No fancy stuff (no lobster, no truffles, nothing but a creamy and light cheese sauce tossed with perfectly cooked mac pasta. Comfort food at its best. And desserts? Oh my! Soft, warm blueberry cake and a warm, super chocolaty brownie, both a la mode. Yum!
Nice wine list, good cocktails, excellent service.
The only disappointment was the coffee... too bad. Served in a french press, but no flavor!
Food was good, but the ambience is less than relaxing. PrepKitchen-PLEASE remove the coin-Connect 4 game that you have out for children to play with— it is SO LOUD and extremely rude to have a child dropping coins next to you. Quiet games would be awesome!
Great simple menu. Great ambiance good service, tasty food. What more could you ask for. Oh, and small but good wine selection. Putting this on a new favorite list....
Mother’s Day was extra special!
The food is creative and service enjoyable. I love going here, it’s my happy place.
Excellent food and wonderful service. Whether during the week or on the weekend, the staff is always very attentive and was very accommodating! Have been in several times and will continue to come back!
Brunch menu is awesome! We love the chicken sandwich and the BLTA. Of course, you have to start with sliders or their Brussels and a side of the fries with trio sauces....boom!
Food, drinks and service were all great. The indoor / outdoor atmosphere was a nice setting, but the flies buzzing over our corner table were the only discomfort in our experience.
This little gem of a restaurant is a great addition to San Marcos. The ambiance is great and the food is fabulous. I had the salmon and it was prepared perfectly. Our server was great and gave my friend and I time to catch up over wine before ordering. Was not rushed at all. Will definitely be back.
Definitely a disappointment. Having dined at the Little Italy location, we were expecting good things. Unfortunately, I really can't point to much positive. Our server was disinterested at best, and the food mirrored the server. My wife and I shared a few small plates and each had a salad. There was only one positive, the presentation of her Smoked Beet and Goat cheese salad was cool. It came served under-glass and was presented with a lifting of the glass lid and a release of the smoke/steam trapped underneath, which was waved with the lid for full effect. Alas, it was more "show than go" when it came to the taste. The Tuna in the Tuna Crudo was utterly tasteless. I assume it was a processed, composite, frozen tuna filet, but it is really hard to confirm. For all I know, it could have been a lump of baitfish or some other unknown, inanimate object covered with the overwhelming chili sauce....which is all you could taste. The crab cakes were equally uninspiring, mostly tasteless, with a soggy texture bonus. Even the Brussels sprouts (normally a fav) were an overly saturated with oil failure. All in all, a very poor (except for the bill) dining experience.
Fantastic restaurant. Kid friendly but adult great. Lots of free close parking. Always love it.
The food and drinks were fantastic. Will be coming back!
My husband and I were celebrating our anniversary this past weekend, and came to Prep Kitchen for dinner. The food and service were great! They even brought us out complimentary champagne since they knew it was our anniversary. We will definitely be coming back!
Always enjoy our visit here. Great drinks, great service and nice menu that does change. We enjoyed an afternoon on the patio and our server Corey was attentive and funny.
Great staff, relaxing setting, good food, but could have been cooked better. I’ll try back again in 6 months
The new addition to the restaurants in San Marcos was both just right for a date night dinner with calming atmosphere. Our server, Miranda was quick and pleasant making dining worthwhile.
