Rec Pier Chop House
We went to the Rec Pier Chop House for a special meal at the end of a holiday weekend. The Pendry hotel in which it is located is a spectacular luxury hotel akin to Marriott's Edition. The walkways are filled with beautiful art a lush greenery. The food at the Chop House was very good. We had the Pumpkin soup, a seasonal special, that was just delicious. Also had a big Caesar salad, halibut and brussel sprouts - each of which was very nice. While the food was very good - the service was only ok. The soup and salad came out at the same time. I suppose we're supposed to eat the soup while it's hot? The waitress knew her stuff and could recite the specials etc.... but had little happiness. Meh. The cocktail didn't come out until after we had the appetizer. None of those things are great sins.... but the prices at the Chop House are surely luxury prices - with the steaks in the $150 range. The hotel room was also at a luxury price. At that price range, I expect luxury service and luxury ambiance. Good or perhaps very good - but not awesome.
The room was so loud, you couldn’t hold a conversation with the people at the table. 4 people came to the table when we sat down asking if there was anything they could get us. After that, it was hard to get our water glass filled. Food was ok but way overpriced.
Great food, great space. As with most American restaurants I don't understand this incessant need to clear plates and bowls away while people are still eating. Leave everything until the last person finishes eating. Makes you feel that you're being rushed.
Great meal, great service. A perfect choice for a date night or special occasion. The pumpkin soup was a stand out.
Toto, we are not in Kansas anymore!
Oh my what a wonderful experience.
As a proud Baltimorean, I couldn't stop smiling.
Wonderful, friendly but efficient and warm service. Go Danny!
Food so good I wanted to get a room and come back the next day.
Thank God for Under Armour and Kevin Plank - Great Baltimore citizens.
Way to go!
While there was drama outside of the control of the restaurant (patron collapsed at their table requiring an ambulance) This had an impact on the quality of the food (steak was cold) and the service. I would generally have expected more from a restaurant that charges these prices. In addition, when I sent my medium-rare steak back because it was cold (having sat while the drama noted above ensued) it came back heated up however was no longer medium rare and was a little tough. Generally for these prices we would be more inclined to go to the Prime Rib in the future for our Anniversary dinner.
Wayyyyy too salty!!! Told our waitress but got no response from her or the kitchen. Could never go back
The service was not very good and the food just above average for the cost.
Atmosphere is always incredible. The hostess was beyond exceptional, remembered my name from the reservation and even said goodbye using my last name with formal politeness. Made a great impression. The food always comes a bit short of the atmosphere but it’s a trade off that I’m willing to accept on occasion. The service makes up for the over cooked eggs on the benedict and cold hollandaise. Overall, I continually recommend this spot to the average diner.
Requested two glasses of champagne to be waiting at table when we arrived. Followed up twice prior and it didn’t happen. We had to ask for them when we arrived. Extremely frustrating! Also had to ask waitress to switch out my white wine glass for a red wine glass based on the wine I ordered.
The Rec Pier Chop House is a beautiful restaurant in the gorgeous Sagamore Pendry Baltimore boutique hotel. The service is spot on but the food is just so so. The cheese board and the ricotta appetizer were delicious but the dinners were over cooked and lacked flavor. The signature crab pasta dish was overdone with the jalapenos!
Best steak I ever had! Service was spot on, atmosphere was wonderful.
Our go-to spot for a special occasion. You cannot beat the food, service, ambiance or location.
Everything was perfect regarding our dining experience on 9/21/2019. The service was impeccable as was the ambiance and our meals. I hope to go back very soon!!
Food was bad. No Gluten free options. Restrooms were dirty
This place is outstanding. They helped to make my wife’s birthday dinner the ultimate experience. They’re very helpful and accommodating as the party grew larger the closer it got to dinner time. This is a place you’ll never forget. We loved it. Thank you!! Thank you!!
I travel to Baltimore on a regular basis. When I am in town I always make a point to have dinner at the Rec Pier Chop House. The staff are wonderful, atmosphere is beautiful and the food is always outstanding.
Not only did they not acknowledge the special occasion, we waited 15 minutes for a reservation,
First my water glass was chipped. Scraped my lip !
The waitress was good but very busy and not as attentive as other times dining at the Rec Pier.
The Caesar Salad seasoning was off, too garlicky and runny. Only ate 1/4 of the salad.
The Ragu (Bolognese) pasta didn't live up to previous tastings. The penne noodles were stuck together and the sauce was too thick and lacking the usual good taste. Returned 1/2 the serving.
Great food & amazing service!!! Can’t say enough about how attentive the staff was & how great the food was. Really a wonderful place. It’s a beautiful restaurant with amazing interior design. Only down side- we were at a table for four and could not hear one another. It was a gorgeous square table- just too loud a restaurant & table makes you too far away from one another to lean in & hear one another.
Not much to say other than, one (1) of the best restaurants anywhere! It's a must "go".
My meal came out incorrectly,
I had brunch there on Sunday with my family. The food was delicious and the staff was courteous and professional. Terrific ambiance.
All great, except unnecessary delay in seating due to table change, which started the evening off wrong. But the service and food turned things around. Style was a bit snobby overall, but great food and service. Pricing on the high side.
Lots of fun!
Food was extraordinary. Erica our server was attentive and recommendations. Will definitely return next time we are Baltimore.
Another outstanding meal and service that we had. Steaks were amazing, and the cocktails were outstanding!
The restaurant is a beautiful space, with thoughtful decor and an engaging street view. Our brunch server was pleasant but she was not attentive. A runner delivered our appetizer but we had to wait for her to return a few minutes later, as we were not given any side plates. Our entrees were also delivered by runners and we had to wait for hertz return to ask for hot sauce and refill our waters. The restaurant was not busy. Our food was warm, but not hot. This has been my second experience with not receiving hot food here. I ordered the shrimp diavolo, and it was much better my first time having it. This time, it truly lacked flavor and seasoning. I had to add a good amount of salt before it tasted how I remembered it. I also had to add a good amount of salt to my side order of polenta—which was a surprisingly small portion for a $7 charge, knowing polenta is not an expensive ingredient. The service and food do not justify the prices they charge.
Atmosphere is very cool and the wait staff very courteous. The menu is fairly limited and is geared toward directing you toward a over-priced steak. The appetizers, especially the Caesar salad, were outstanding and our entrees were very good. The drinks are very pricey, but good. The practice of charging al carte for sides and even steak toppings is annoying and unnecessary. My advice would be to broaden the menu a little bit and stop trying to imitate clip joints like Ruth Crist. The atmosphere and good food will make this a go-to special occasion destination.
We were extremely disappointed! We had been here before and it was both my wife's, my daughter's and my birthdays! So i picked the Chop House as a special place! What a mistake!
First, the restaurant if beautiful. The street parking is impossible and the valet parking is outrageous ($20.00) considering the location!
I put down that it was our birthdays on Open Table and my daughter called during the day to tell the restaurant that it was our birthdays.
First, no one recognized our birthdays.
Second, the waiter seemed to avoid us (we are NOT a raucous party).
Third my wife and I asked for our steaks to be "pink on the inside" so that there would be no confusion about "medium".
We were a party of four. Two meals came out okay. My meal as well as my wife's came out raw! So we sent it back. It took 15+ minutes to reheat the steak, it was now burned on the outside and it came after the others had finished! NO apologies. No one asked if our steak was okay, just dumped at our seats and walked away.
I must note that our wine steward, April, was nice and very knowledgeable.
Not the way to be treated at a high end restaurant!
Won't come back or recommend it to others!
Every staff person beginning with the valet was attentive and welcoming. Informative and enthusiastic about their product & serving their customer. The staff was available but not intrusive. The food was outstanding! Creative preparation artfully presented using quality ingredients. I ordered the poached halibut and my husband ordered the stuffed meatball pasta. We shared two sides and enjoyed every bite (regrettably leaving no room for dessert)! We toured the property ending our evening outdoors at the infinity pool patio. The music and vistas were sensational. We look forward to coming back!
This is my third time. Not sure why I keep repeating the same mistake. The food is just consistently sub-par. We ordered salads yesterday that came out sad and pathetic. A $19 salad with chicken included a tiny bit of greens on 1/3 of the plate and a de-boned flavorless chicken leg. The salad with tuna was similarly lame.
It's a shame the food is so bad because the space is nicely done. Service was good.
We had the best service and the most wonderful meal! The ambiance is fantastic!!
Got a burned steak and no one came by to make it right. This was after I received the wrong beer which no one made right. I ended up eating charred steak—I can still taste the char. Then when I received the bill I had an item that I didn’t order—they fixed that.
The food was very bad, the service was very bad. Recommend you find another place. Zero stars for an overpriced, nasty meal.
Waiters who give long speeches explaining every unwanted detail of a dish ought to be prepared to bring out what was ordered the first time. With each successive course, we had to ask for missing items. It is rude, pure and simple, to start clearing the table before all guests are finished with the course. When the table is cleared between courses, resetting the table with silverware without having to ask would be a nice touch. A fork loaded with food held in the hand of a guest is a good clue that they are not finished. When a guest asks if it is possible to have a side dish of pasta, it should not turn into a high-pressure attempt at upselling an entire additional main to be shared by the table. When a credit card is displayed on top of the check folder, it is helpful to collect it and run the card before the card reaches its expiry date. Overall we received very good but not outstanding food, however the service was amateurish and not befitting the locale. Our tab ran about $245 for two for starters, two steaks, sides, dessert, and espresso but no alcohol. Not a particularly good value.
My husband and I were there to celebrate his birthday. Italian chop house was a great selection for us because he loves steaks and I love pasta. The ambiance is stunning. It wasn’t crowded and we were able to sit right up front at the glass wall and watch the people go by. The service was also top notch. There were several people coming back and forth at the table but it wasn’t intrusive at all. Our server was very knowledgeable and attentive.
The food was just meh. My pasta with crab meat came out lukewarm and didn’t have much flavor. My husband thought the crab was a bit mushy. His NY strip was cooked to the right temp with a char broil on the outside but honestly, didn’t have much flavor. We both thought those expensive steaks from Wegman’s we cooked on our backyard grill were more tender and flavorful. I wish I wanted to go back but at such a high price point, I am not sure we will.
We were celebrating my wife’s birthday with our daughter and had an excellent meal. The employees were all so very friendly and attentive to our needs. This is a special place and they made my wife’s birthday extremely enjoyable.
Having been to this restaurant several times, we've noticed a significant drop off in terms of food and service over our last two visits. A hot appetizer arrived five minutes before a cold appetizer, and our pasta courses were brought out immediately after our appetizers were cleared. My impression is that the pasta had been made too soon and left to sit in the kitchen before serving.
In addition, the appetizer menu has been reduced to a small number of dishes, some with questionable pricing - $16 for a caesar salad? And while my tomato and burrata appetizer was huge, my wife's octopus portion was small. There's an overall feel that the restaurant is just going through the motions. In the two years that we've been going, there have been zero changes made to the five pasta dishes and there were no non-menu specials the night that we were there.
it's a shame because the space is so beautiful, but I can't help but feel that the restaurant is catering more to the hotel guests and patrons who do not live in Baltimore. For for what you pay for dinner, you expect to have a higher level dining experience overall.
Inattentive service; limited menu; for the money- expected much more
