Riverview Hotel & Dining
Upstairs is a lovely bright and airy area. The best tables are near the windows and away from the bar.
Sadly I have little positive to say about my recent dining experience here.We waited 35 minutes for a drink,we were not even offered water in that time although surrounding tables were. The waiter was not at all switched on nd we could not catch his attention. We chose to just have mains and these took one hour from ordering to arrive at our table, whilst my fish was nicely cooked the accompaniments were disappointing, the zucchini flowers were in a batter reminiscent of a pluto pup and the pepperonata appeared to be a jar of capsicum strips mixed with a jar of capers, not what a pepperonata should be. My husbands spatchcock was dry and overcooked , too long in the deep fryer. The green mango salad was more capsicum than mango and our sides of mash-luke warm and lumpy, and a "green" salad, that strangely, had craisins, pickled red onion and radish and oven roasted cherry tomatoes with an extraordinarily vinegary dressing. With the bill coming in at just under $200.00 there are definitely other places I would have preferred to have been parted from my money.
So good to see a lovely old pub that has been brought back to life. Live music downstairs & beautiful restaurant upstairs with an impressive menu & wine list to match.
Met the host and hostess. A great night with some great food. The refurbishment of the hotel and restaurant looks great.
Good food and service, certainly recommend a visit to the Riverview Hotel.
We made a reservation believing it was for the pub, but it was for the restaurant upstairs. The barman agreed we could sit in the pub, but obviously didn't notify upstairs that we had arrived.
The Sunday roasts that we ordered were really not what we were expecting at all. Very thick slices of topside fished out of a bain-marie, old, stale roast potatoes and an assortment of stewed beetroot. The best bit was the Yorkshire pudding and that's hardly worth $29. What happened to the normal slices of rare roast beef?
The food was as ok, not as good as it used to be. The staff really need more training, especially with regards to the menu. We ordered steak, and some vegetables. I asked if the steak came with anything and was told no, so we ordered mash potatoes too. Our meal arrived and served with the steak was mashed potatoes!!
We had such a lovely time..it’s been a while since last there so to our surprise it had been beautifully renovated, lovely service and food. We will be back again!
Great Food. The spatchcock was cooked to perfection. Fantastic wine list. FABULOUS.
Not based on the food I had on this occasion but I’ve enjoyed eating here before so perhaps yes
We thoroughly enjoyed our evening. The food was delicious, my pork belly and barramundi were perfectly cooked and the selection of wine was great. The service was also terrific and friendly. A really good night.
Nice waitress nice evening, food was fantastic. Would recommend it to amyone
Quality of food was excellent as was the ambiance of the room.
Best crispy barramundi skin we have had in a long time and the duck was spot on.
Will come back again
This is a very quaint little pub set in a quiet leafy area, and we enjoyed our New Years Eve dinner at the upstairs restaurant - tasty, decent portions and prompt service. I was surprised at the lack of pictures on the wall or any decoration generally so I'm not sure if they were in the middle of a refurb, however the staff were very welcoming, smiles all round, and I would happily recommend this as good value for money.
Very cute, old fashion pub. Nice food and excellent service, strongly recommend it !
Staff very friendly and polite, efficient and professional. Food was excellent too.
The Riverview was a great choice for our after Australian Citizenship ceremony. Food was fresh and delicious, it would be great to see more GF choices. Staff are always friendly with great service. Thank you
Your prices are fine dining
Your staff are not experienced
Although they were friendly and polite
It did not balance with your pricing
Great location and well presented restaurant
Reasonable menu choices at moderate prices
Really attentive staff all of which added up to a great lunch with friends
Recently renovated pub dining room, the prices and menu have also been renovated. Very pricey for the food and service which was still good pub level. Having been a few times pre renovation and had good meals, we were a bit disappointed that what was generally a good meal out was now not such good value. As there are plenty of good pub options in the neighbourhood we won't rush back for a while.
Hi Vicki Firstly thank you for the feedback as it is very important to us. We work hard to ensure customers receive high quality food and value for money. The prices of the menu items that are not new have not changed since the renovation, there are a few new items on the menu than previously. We will take the time to review our menu to ensure they do represent value. Regards The Riverview Hotel
Good quality food, pleasant surroundings & service
food was great, lamb pie exceptional , table setup was good room to move not sitting on top of other diners.
Never been to the Riverview before but will definitely be back. Arrived about 6pm to a great atmosphere with a packed bar and some fantastic live music. Had a couple of drinks then upstairs for a beautiful meal topped off by some of the tastiest and tenderest lamb we've. Will bring some friends too next time for sure!!!
Food is still good quality but new wait staff are unwelcoming and unfriendly - big drop in standard.
Great looking pub - refreshing to find one that feels warm and welcoming, and is not all metal and concrete. Love the restaurant space upstairs. Our slow-cooked lamb, with mash, for 2 was perfectly cooked, tender and delicious, complemented by a green-leaf salad and an impressive (in taste and price!) Margaret River Red. Somehow not realizing we opted for the most expensive bottle on offer, it was somewhat of a shock, but truth be told it was a very good drop. We will be back (reading glasses in hand next time), and would love to try the bar fair downstairs as well, where it was buzzing on the night. Definitely recommended.
Great service from Adrian upstairs
Fresh perfectly poured Guinness
Steak and chat potatoes so yummy
Delicious food in a great venue with a lovely ambience
Food, wine and service was fantastic. We had the 12 hour slow cooked lamb paired with Howard Park 'Leston' 2015 Cabernet. Brilliant lunch!
Visited with family from outside Sydney and had a lovely time. The bar is quaint and reminded us of the old English pubs. Nice fire on a cold night. Then went upstairs for a good meal, where the Lamb for two was enough for four of us. The steak was delicious and tender. At the end of the meal we found out the kids meals are free on Monday night - three meals for nix! what a bonus!!! we will be heading back again some time soon.
I would because the food was good, just keep a eye on your order it can take a while.
Staff were very young and inexperienced.
Great food - Sunday roast was one the best I've had in Sydney. Nice bar downstairs for a drink afterwards too.
Thank you very we all had a great night. Good excellent - tick. Service - excellent. Would come back again.
The food was delicious. I had the Duck my friend the Barramundi. Everything was great.
Excellent semi-fine modern Australian cuisine. Delicious food in a comfortable pub style atmosphere, absolutely would recommend.
One of the last hidden gems of Balmain...please keep it secret
A very nice place to dine.
The choices of food and wine were excellent.
The lamb pie is a winner!
Being able to sit and chat easily with friends was fabulous.
Having the pub downstairs with a vibrant hum, very much in the background, meant their was atmosphere but not noise.
The staff are attentive but not intrusive.
Our second time back and definitely more visits to come.
We came here specifically for the Sunday Roast and it did not disappoint. 3 of our group of 6 were an hour late and there were no issues from the staff either - in fact, the lovely waitress even went along with our jokes towards the latecomers.
It was more expensive than some of the roasts we've been to but it was worth the extra.
The absolute best roast of the day!! Highly recommend it! The staff so friendly & added to the ambience
Great food with excellent service
Would recommend for date night
Very busy bar downstairs
Neighbourhood Gem, recommended as great fora good for a Sunday roast, only the had run out!
So we headed upstairs and ordered at the restaurant. More expensive but chef went to the trouble to make sure our lamb shoulder had the trimmings of the roast. Will make sure we come earlier next time to try out the Pub Roast.
