Salerno by Chef Pirozzi
There were 4 of us and we all loved our meals! I’d never heard of Gouda stuffed fried olives so we shared them... soooo good!!!! We will be back!!!
Always a pleasure to dine here. One of our favs!
I love this restaurant and Alessa, the food is excellent. The service is very disappointing. There’s annoyance from servers if you ask for more pesto dip or bread. We asked for a small plate of parmigiana cheese and were told they can’t leave it on the table (?). So the host waited for us to sprinkle some and took the rest. Service starts with big ‘Hello’ then just spirals down from there. It would be nice if they had servers that were more attentive and welcoming. Food is amazing so I might consider take out moving forward.
Our food was very good, but the menu was somewhat unusual so it seemed somewhat limited in choice. The restaurant is smallish so tables are close together, which generates more noise.
Unfortunately, we waited almost 45 minutes for our food to come out. Our waiter never even came to our table in that time to explain the back up in the kitchen or apologize - nothing. Very disappointed with the service and timeliness.
Walking into Salerno by Chef Pirozzi felt like a disconnect from Southern California and a connect to Italy. The people inside are enjoying themselves a lot and the food is absolutely amazing. It was the perfect way to end the evening.
We have dined at the restaurant numerous times, but this time we brought friends with us and the experience was such that we cannot envision returning. Service was very slow and generally poor and the waiter simply rude. The manager when we ultimately complained was similarly rude and hostile. While the entrees were very good as usual that could not make up for the overall experience. We apologized to our friends.
Service: It was slow and employees seemed unhappy. Could be their hot and cramped work area? Open Table reservation did not make it to their reservation list but they sat us anyway. Had this been a busy night we would have been in trouble.
Food: Salad was fresh, could have used more shaved parm and a little less dressing. Dressing was a little on bland side but we still enjoyed it. The Black Taglerini was excellent and loaded with fresh clams. Very hard to find squid ink pasta, initially why we stopped by. The portion size is big, a little too big for me. To each his own. The Spaghetti Verde was excellent as well. The fresh arugula pasta was brilliant. Wine selection is very good too. We will return to try other items.
Ambiance: The space is “cozy” so you bump into each other from time to time. There is a “homey” Italian feel. It’s also noisy, if you don’t hear well you might not be happy. For those of us with good hearing, remember the folks next to you can hear your conversation. 🙃
The restaurant was closed . We made our reservation , drove to the restaurant and it was closed . I called the restaurant and it’s voice mail had their hours and it says they were to be open !
I went with my husband for a date night. The server was really sweet but she admittedly said she was unfamiliar with the location considering she normally works at their other restaurant. So the two times we have been we have had to wait a fair amount to even talk to a waiter let alone get our order in. This is not ideal. And it’s a super tiny space rather loud and on top of each other (think NYC) If that’s not a deterrent then it’s definitely worth a try. The pasta special was the best - lobster ravioli! Otherwise the food is pretty good. Decent but not worth the price in my opinion.
Best Italian food in Laguna Beach! Newport Beach native, now living in Vegas.
Food was bland and boring. Service was non attentive and dismissive. Went to Aleysa recently and poor service there as well. Very disappointing and will not return.
This neighborhood gem has very good food. I had the caprese salad and delicious Eggplant Parmesan. The service was very good and I recommend Salerno.
This place used to be good- i knew something changed when round plates came instead of rectangular ones- i asked the waiter, who was so so, is there a new chef? The presentation is different. So was the sauce and the food- would not go back
Not enough wait staff. They all work hard but they were not ready for the crowd. No air conditioning. It was it hot inside.
Excellent food , we were a group of 8 , the service was superb as was the food . Totally a fun experience was had by all
First of all there is no air conditioning or fans in the place. So it makes it very hot and uncomfortable to eat there. I ordered the Cioppino and on the menu it said that shrimp, fish, and calamari were in it. When I got it there was 75 percent clams (of which I don't eat) and very little of anything else. I would not have ordered it if it said clams. (they don't agree with me). I asked the waiter to please switch out the clams with something else, he was very rude and said "that's seafood and we cannot replace it, you will have to pay more money". So much for customer satisfaction. Terrible business ethics.
Excellent food. The restaurant is small and very popular so seating is a bit tight... enjoyed the evening.
Some food items that we wanted on menu, they were out of.
Otherwise, very good.
Seemed a bit down in all respects from my visit last year. Had to ask for bread, water and candle to be lit. Then, every dish came out before the prior one was finished. Felt rushed. Pasta, 50/50 was good. Chicken Parmesan very good, but needed a bit more sauce as it was dry. The spinach was not good- garlic was burned. Never serve a dish with burned garlic, that is not Italian
Everything was served hot.
The homemade pasta is heavenly! You must try the butternut squash with fried sage leaves and brown butter sauce...delicious! The staff was very attentive on such a busy Friday night. We will be back!
Best vegetarian ravioli ever! Their kale mozzarella ravioli is extraordinary and I look forward to returning for another order! We ate here on a very busy summer Friday evening and will try a more quiet time during the week in the fall, but despite the busy atmosphere, our server was quite attentive and efficient. I appreciate the light dressing for the fresh cesear salad and the wonderful pre-dinner pesto! Food prices are quite reasonable for Laguna although the wine prices higher than average, but this won't keep us away in the future.
Delicious delicious delicious. Everything we ordered was fantastic and we had a great time!
Pasta dishes were very tasty, wine selection a bit expensive for listed wines, and service this particular day was a bit slow. Overall quality of Food was excellent! We will return!
Delicious and amazing food!!!!
Salerno has been a family favorite for 40 years- we knew the original owner! Food is wonderful- staff is hardworking and pleasant-but make reservations to keep guests of all ages happy.

The food was delicious and the ambience for a date night is wonderful. The only complaint I would have is that even with the reservation, this restaurant was very crowded and we did have to wait for a while. My husband and I are not drinkers so sitting at the bar was really not an option. In defense, the female at the front was very understanding and very nice. Obviously, this is a very popular restaurant and after you've tasted the food, you will know why! I will definitely be returning.
After our dinner we wanted a cappuccino. We were told their machine wasn’t working. We accepted that explanation. We left Salerno’s, walked to Alessa’s,and asked if they had cappuccino. The hostess told us “No, that when it gets too busy, the stop serving these types of after-dinner drinks”. We then felt “lied to” by the Salerno’s staff. At least the Alessa hostess was honest. We went next door to 230 and spent a bunch more money having cappuccinos & dessert. I don’t think we’ll go back to Salerno’s.
I hope this was just an off night, because we want to like Salerno's.
Very busy night. Food was awesome but they only had one server for entire place so service was slow.
The food was delicious and I felt like I was eating in Italy. The service was excellent. The quality of the ingredients was so fresh and authentic. I will bring family and friends here often. My new favorite !
We loved Salerno and wished we lived closer to come to this restaurant more frequently.
We had the eggplant burrata appetizer, the lamb shank over pasta, pasta verde, pasta with black ink.
All our dishes were delicious.
The service was very good. We would highly recommend this restaurant.
The food is among the best Italian around!
We had read some negative reviews about the noise but in general everyone liked the food. So, we sat at the bar and it was quiet and we received great service and delicious food.
Only regret is they do not have a expresso machine!
You come to this restaurant every time we are in Laguna Beach.
Although they have lasagna and chicken parm the majority of the Italian dishes direct from Italy, not the usual American dishes.
Pastas you normally don't see with many different sauces.
This year something happened to our order and it came really late however without asking the restaurant cut the bill in half.
We will continue to go there every year
Yummy! This was a great Laguna experience
We were expecting a lot given that it's the same owner as the great, former restaurant 'Mare' in Laguna Beach.
However, we were sourly disappointed. The wait staff and service were almost non-existent. The food was anticlimactic in proportion and lackluster on taste. The restaurant was small, but packed in too tightly.
All of this would be tolerable if the prices weren't so high as to leave (another) bad taste in your mouth.
Fabulous! Our first time there was to dine before our tickets to see Pageant of the Masters. Loved every menu item we had. And our server was amazing. Gave great recommendations off the menu. We will be back!
Service was extremely slow my dish didn't have any flavor to the spaghetti. I told the waiter we had to be out In time for the show But he ignored us and made as wait 20 minutes for dessert. We were late for the pageant of the Masters.
