Cool retro decor and relaxed atmosphere. Would rate it higher but $30 for the pasta “special” was too much, given portion size and 4 shrimp.
We went for dinner and a show. Both were fabulous and a great value for the money. Intimate space, great talent with Alex Pangman, and very good food.
Restaurant needs a renovation. It looks prey old, tired and dingy. Burger was good, not anything out of the ordinary. Cesar salad was sad... lettuce was fresh but the dressing was dolloped on the top. Service and staff was the only positive experience. Definitely off my return list.
We like the retro decor, but it’s a bit dull and sad. Needs some livening up. Maybe a fresher wall colour would help. (I am a designer, so attuned to this!)
Also, the banquettes are too upright- not very comfy. Sad colour too.
Service was excellent.
Food was serviceable, good but not inspired.
Steak, and liver, were fine, if not divine.
Veggies were too garlicky.
Not sure we will rush back... needs some new energy.
Great meal and wonderful service.. looking forward to experiencing their upstairs experience
Dining before theatre
My friend and I are Mirvish Subscribers and enjoy dining at the Senator before each show regardless of show location (happy to take the night air and get a bit of exercise before sitting for a couple of hours!)
Great food, great value, very friendly personal service.
We look forward to our evenings of dinner & theater.
See you in October!
Great evening discovering the Senator. Chicken Pot Pie was amazeballz, as was the salmon special. Will go back for sure.
Lovely dining while awaiting showtime at the nearby theatre. Our server was a delightful young woman who made our evening out even more fun. Looking forward to next time.
Both my dinner friend and I agreed that we hadn't been to the senator for quite some time, and had forgotten how charming it is. Great booths! The food was very good and not too expensive. The service was great! A really good evening. We both agreed we would go back again more often.
We chose to eat at Senator upon recommendation and we were not disappointed. Our server, Christophe, was funny, engaging and very knowledgeable. 2 of us enjoyed the liver and onions which was out of this world. The chicken pot pie had huge chunks of white meat and a great presentation. We did not have room for dessert. It can get quite loud as booths are close together. I would go back again!
Always a great place!!
Food, service, friendly and fun
The restaurant was a pleasure!
We were greeted very pleasantly upon our arrival and seated right away in a comfortable booth
The server was at out table immediately and brought our delicious cold white wine
We ordered our dinner
Food was excellent
Our server was funny and friendly
We never felt rushed
All in all our go to restaurant when attending the Ed Mirvish Theater
This was my first time at the Senator. I have tried several other times before a play was never was able to get a reservation. The Senator was well worth the wait! The food was very good, the restaurant has a history like none other and the service was GREAT!!! Highly recommend.
We were made to feel welcome and were seated immediately after reservation was confirmed.
Our waitress was very friendly and attentive.
Always delicious, always served with a smile, always greeted upon arrival by an interested and cheerful Maitre ‘D. Could not ask for more!
This is truly a historic property. Very nostalgic for someone who grew up in Toronto. On top of that, the service and food were excellent. I don’t think I’ve ever been made to feel so welcome in a restaurant.
Excellent food but far too expensive! Special of the day was a taco, which was really a salad in a deep fried tortilla bowl, that was $30. An $18-$25 dollar salad is too much! A $30 salad was ridiculous!!!! Price was not disclosed at the point of the specials being reviewed.
The service was excellent, my wife Carolyn loved the Liver and Onions and my pasta dish was done
perfect, my desert the chocolate layer cake was okay, should of went with the homemade pie.
I would totally recommend the Senator before a play, as were seeing the 8 pm show Waitress.
Simply delicious dinner and fantastic dessert. Extraordinary meals of the every day served with good grace and a smiling face. Excellent.
Perfect dinner before the theater. Old fashioned diner with great food! Service was attentive and friendly. Good value.
I ordered one of the specials - a past with shrimp and rose sauce. The food was quite tasty, but there were only 4 medium shrimp in the entire dish and it cost $30🤨 I left feeling ripped off.
This was my third visit to The Senator, a conveniently located old-time-y diner right across the street from the Ed Mirvish theatre. The maitre d’ offered us the front window table, which offered far more room and far less noise than the somewhat cramped booths in the rear. I will always ask for this table, now! The food was predictably delicious (I had the pan-seared salmon catch of the day), and the service friendly and timely.
Very noisy. Rhubarb pie tasted strange. Husband liver delicious. Lox appetizer and potato pancake skimpy and not as good as it was before. French fries delicious.
I have been to the Senator Wine bar on several occasions, each time for Julian Fauth’s/guest performance. The food and service are always to my satisfaction, Samantha, as always, was excellent and the food was delicious. However, the attendance was less than desirable for a Friday night. I’ve been to several of Julian’s performances when there was ‘full’ attendance, when performing with Ken and other guests. As a fellow entertainer, performing for 6 people is not exactly rewarding or encouraging, especially for a Juno award performer like Julian. Perhaps it’s out of the Wine Bar’s control, but certainly better attendance is needed.
The Senator never disappoints! Fabulous food, service and location for pre- theatre dining.
Wonderful evening! Food delicious and the gentleman who greeted us was so gracious as we were late! We will be back!
Cosy & Comfortable atmosphere and very convenient to Pantages Theatre
Service was great; most guests were trying to get out in time for the 8:00pm theatre events across the road our our waiter was very attuned to that deadline.
Food was very nice but quite pricey; as a vegetarian I’m often dismayed by how much more value my meat (or salmon) eating friends seem to get for their $$$.
A very popular dining spot and to be admired for its longevity! Too bad we had to shout to hear ourselves across our table for two!
It is always a pleasure to dine there.
The noise level is a little high, but tolerable. The service is friendly and accommodating.
The food is always good, The fries are delicious and not greasy. There was a little too much garlic in the vegetables but they were cooked beautifully, and the mashed potatoes about as good as it gets.
No pretense, just a good place to eat.
We had a wonderful pre theatre dinner at The Senator! Only drawback was that the restaurant was very noisy and hard to have a good catch up with friends.
Gracious amiable staff. Good menu variety. Delicious food. Great pre theatre dining experience.
Dinner with an old friend that I haven’t seen in a while who cane from out of town.
we are from out of town (burlington) .. always like dining at senator when theatre is on victoria.. always have a lovely meal.. very noisy when we were there.. but shows how animated we all are.. we'll continue to visit.. loved our meals.. 'til next time.. karen, lori, and linda..
Our server was AMAZING!!! We’ve actually haven’t had such a fabulous experience in a very long time.
The noise level in the restaurant from other servers literally throwing dishes into the bus bin that was beside the bar was horrendous. Loud, distracting, more than unpleasant & detracted from the normal fabulous evening we have at The Senator. My suggestion is to remove the bus bin - your servers clearly have tuned out the noise they create, so to have the bin there will encourage the throwing of dishes.
We have dined at the Senator many many times and continue to return. Staff are friendly and fun. Food is delicious.
We had fabulous service and the best salmon I have had in a long time. Vegetables were cooked properly but a little boring.
Came for dinner and stayed for some great music. Food and service was great - would have stayed longer if the kids didn’t get tired! Def get the chocolate cake for dessert.
Good food, good people , great location for MIRVISH theatre
We’ll be back again
I have eaten here before
Surprised to see menu up stairs and downstairs the same
Some what disappointing when your expecting different food
