Indian bread served with a curry chicken and potatoes dipping sauce
Belacan fried rice/shrimp paste fried rice. Malaysian spicy shrimp paste fried rice
Delicious food as always. Outdoor patio, noisy train.
The food was amazing!!! A unique find in Chicago for Indonesian food
Everything was wonderful! Including the coconut rum in the iced coffee. Yum
Everything was delicious!
Fabulous meal! The restaurant location has been through several rebrandings over the years and has a bit of a run-down feeling to it, but you owe it to yourself to stick with it.
The menu focuses mainly on Malaysian cuisine and has a great selection. You definitely owe it to yourself to consider something new, and the staff can certainly guide you if you’re unsure.
All the food brought to our table was fresh and hot, and timing was great (party of 6). Glad to see that they are emerging from the pandemic, and look forward returning when we’re back in town.
The restaurant closes at 9pm and kitchen at 8:30pm. Timings need to be updated in Open Table. We were denied dining.
The waitress forgot to send our orders for all our entrees to the kitchen, and after finishing up our two appetizers they came to our table telling us the kitchen has closed and apologized they forgot our food! Wow… I can’t believe how unorganized they were, and while we were waiting someone else was picking up food and was complaining how they forgot a dish as well. So I think there are definitely some organizational issues. We made a trip out of it since the restaurant is far from where we live, not sure when we’ll be back again.
It was our first time dining out back on the patio — loved that and had terrific food and service.
TL;DR: Wrong order, poor service, long wait time, hidden 20% surcharge
We used to love Serai and dined here frequently, and I usually do not post negative reviews. While the food was still delicious, our last experience at Serai was quite disappointing.
1) It took them 45 minutes after we placed our order to receive our food. Other tables that were seated after us received their food much more quickly.
2) Ordering food was a hassle. We ordered the sambal eggplant (one of our old favorites) and rendang shrimp. We received a shrimp dish which we thought was our rendang shrimp and after confirming with the server that it was rendang shrimp. But after eating it, we realized it was sambal shrimp. We sent it back with half a plate full so we could receive our sambal eggplant and the server said he would “fix it right away”. The eggplant never came, and we were charged for it. When we tried to get the charge removed, the server replied “well you ate it”.
3) Without telling you on their menu or website, they tack on a 20% service surcharge when you get your bill.
With the long wait time, wrong food, getting charged for a dish we didn’t eat, and the 20% automatic surcharge, our favorite Malaysian restaurant sadly has now become a place we will not visit again.
This was our first indoor dining experience in more than a year - and it was fantastic. The food and service were terrific. We appreciated how far apart the tables were and every other element that made for safe dining.
Serai was closed for patio/outdoor dining. Disappointing given that we were not notified by OT/restaurant. A day earlier, I received a text to confirm my reservation. We opted for take out - Crab Rangoon, Spicy Wonton, Tom Yum Soup, Roti Paratha, Shrimp Sambhal & Nasi Goreng. It’s a hit or miss.
Serai was delicious! We were all happy with our dishes. I enjoyed the casual atmosphere and it definitely felt like a step up from your go to delivery spots. Service was timely but pretty casual, which is not a bad thing as long as you're not looking for an upscale spot. I would recommend for sure!
Friend gathering. They accommodated all 8 of us and helped us get enough food family style!
mango chicken-love it! service kind and attentive.
We've been to Serai many times since it opened and the goodness of its food is very consistent. I especially love their Roti appetizer. I only wish they would let us order extra roti (the bread) without having to buy a second appetizer order. The delicious chicken dipping stew is pretty generous and just begs for more roti to sop up its flavor.
Servers were very attentive, seats were very close to each other, and the room was dark. but as a Southeast Asian myself, a lot of the flavors were very close to home (though back home at a much lower price) but it was definitely a wonderful experience, and would definitely come back again!

The Hainanese Chicken was so good but the coconut pudding was the best in my memory!
The Hainanese Chicken is stunning and every dish we ordered is awesome, except for the Tom Yum Soup, a little bit plain compared to others. However, my friends and I didn't quite like the atmosphere there. It's too dark to even read the menu. It might be good for dating, but definitely not for hanging out with friends. As a restaurant with so many good dishes, it should use more lights to let customers take a good look at the great food.
Good food, good value. Cocktails were sub par, but I didn’t expect them to be good. Would go again.
Great service, delicious food, lots of options.
Great Gluten Free options! Food was excellent! Can't wait to return!
so was our first time having food here the experience was great plus I call it Our waitress was Teressa she was wonderful and kind would love to go back
Best chicken curry sauce we ever had... just like my grandmother's. The nasi goreng had a lot of good shrimp and was quite a large serving. Love this place! Definitely will go back.
I love this place, everything is great but definitely try the roti paratha, three pepper chicken and fish (amazing)
The cross section of so many wonderful cultures and their cuisine is what Malaysian food is. It is the delicate blend of thai, indian, and east asian that creates magic. The roti is the best in Chicago.
I love this place.
Great meal. Good drinks. Nice waitress. Pleasant date night
Delicious food and helpful staff! Highly recommend!
Amazing and flavorful food. Came out super fast. Service was slightly slow but will definitely return to try more options
My husband and I tried so I after watching a local food recommendation show. We were absolutely delighted with drinks and cuisine. Our waitress was very helpful in making recommendations as we had never tried Malaysian cuisine. All of her recommendations were excellent. The music was a little loud and intrusive, which annoyed us. We also didn’t enjoy drinking water from jars. We would absolutely recommend this restaurant and will be returning or ordering in.
Best Laksa since I left Singapore!
Fantastic service, food, and atmosphere.
Food and service were both great! We'll definitely be coming back.
Good food and friendly service. My first time trying Malaysian food. The flavors blew me away.
Such a neighborhood gem - I am sad we didn't find it sooner but better late than never :)
We came and the restaurant closed even when we have made the reservation.
Love the outdoor space
I love the patio! On a nice summer night it is very pleasant. My only regret is that they don't carry the prosecco any longer. The portions are large and the service is great.
The food was good but the atmosphere didn't sound like Malaysia. In the complex is fine. The kitchen close at 10 pm, so I suggest to go not later than 9.
