Shumi Japanese Cuisine
Noodles in housemade miso broth with braised pork
Chef's choice sashimi (21pc)
We sat outside and had the hardest time tracking down a waiter both when we wanted to order and when we needed our check. Other than that, the food is amazing as always.
Great omakase and service - quality is amazing. Nice little bowl of ramen at the end of the omakase to top it off on a cold evening
Went here during Covid restrictions. They had seating indoors and outdoors on curb seperated by screens which is a nice touch but I'm not keen on eating curbside so decided to eat in. Tables inside were nicely distanced and of course less of them. Food is fresh and delicious but the service was not up to par. We got seated promptly and they brought water and table condiments right away but forgot to give us menu's. We waited for about 10 minutes for someone to come by with menu's until we finally asked one of workers who told us that someone will be with us shortly. We waited another 5 minutes before someone finally brought over a card with a symbol to get the menu online. Why that wasn't on the table from the start is beyond me! Took another 10 minutes before the waiter came to take or order (seems only one person taking order for the whole restaurant)! Halfway through our order, the waiter up and left to talk to another customer outside without even excusing himself! How Rude! When finally got our order in, the food came out relatively quickly but the servers are all confused and brought our food to another table and they walked around with it until they figured out it belonged to our table. Servers are a bit disorganized, chaotic and not very helpful. I do have to say that the food is good. The fish is nicely prepared, fresh and very delicate. the sushi is just the right portion size and rice is well made. If not for the food, I hesitate to come back but will try again maybe another time when they are not as busy or they get their act together.
Everything was extremely delicious! The Shumi roll was the best!!
We usually have a great experience here but it was just ok this time. The service was slower than when we've eaten inside.
Sashimi and sushi were very good, better than most in Northern NJ, but needs major improvements in the service area...
This was our first visit and Shumi but my husband and I loved it. The sushi was fresh and delicious - some of the best we’ve ever had. We ate inside, which for Covid was spaced very well, but it was a bit chilly with the door open for the staff to easily serve outside patrons. An easy fix for this on our next visit will be a nice warm sweater - and yes there will be another visit!
The food at Shumi is incredible. The best sushi restaurant in the area by far. It's Japanese food prepared by highly trained and passionate sushi chefs in a beautiful space with a high-end lounge-y vibe. Everything on the menu is delicious and elevated to a gourmet level. The outdoor tables that are available right now (October of 2020) are fine, but there are no heat lamps so the outdoor dining scene in the colder months is yet to be seen.
Staff was kind of stand off ish and never offered us anything to drink. Felt rushed even when we were literally one of 2 people sitting in their outdoor area. I would not recommend or return.
Amazing food, great service, lots of outdoor dinning
The chef is awesome!
The food is amazing.
We did Omakase and love it.
This restaurant has very mixed reviews but decided to try it anyway. The food was very good, however, we were only there barely an hour and they were rushing us to get out for the next reservation. It was a bummer and kinda ruined our evening.
Best sushi around. Service was a bit spotty probably because we were outside on the sidewalk.
Great NY style sushi. Can't be beat..
Food was terrible, service was slow and poor.
Omakase worth every penny!
Didn't remember it was byob but there's a liquor store around the corner.
There is more than enough of tempting menu items to keep going back for more!
Great Omakase and Executive Chef David Seo. Very attentive dining staff.
Delicious food as always, outdoor dining is tough on the staff when crowded. Overall the best of best by far.. highly recommend to all....
We had to wait for our table at least 15 minutes. And the host kept getting us confused with another group. The waitress didn’t come until about 30 minutes after we were seated and we didn’t even get the menu app to see what we would want to order. When we were seated they told us they didn’t have any kitchen items because they didn’t have the chefs. We could only order from the sushi menu. We waited over an hour for our food from the time we ordered. We would not go back.
phenomenal! absolutely amazing sushi, so fresh it just melts in your mouth 😍
A lot more needed...taste was ok...nothing exceptional for the cost...granted outdoor may have been the issue but the menu was not all Japanese!!! Food did come out lukewarm...I’d like to see more out of a Japanese restaurant!!!
Terrible and very disappointing. We ordered Edamame, ramen, and the vegetarian box. Only the edamame were good - the ramen was terrible -- I could make better at home using 25 cent ramen, and it was served in a cheap plastic bowl -- and the vegetarian box was a joke: served on a "TV dinner" tray, it featured what looked like a mayonnaise waldorf salad (the type we used to get in the high school cafeteria, only not as good), 6 avocado roll pieces (passable but pedestrian), tempura (not great), and a mix of veggies that were way under cooked. It was a mess. A HUGE disappointment - will never be going back there again. And a major waste of $.
Shouldn’t put 2 different guests’ sushi orders on same plate. I ordered vegan and they were on same plate as my friend’s fish sushi. Ick
But very good food and friendly service. They were overly busy. So was a bit chaotic.
For these money you would expect real plates, not plastic ones.
Here’s the thing. The food here is EXCELLENT. If you like sushi, it is probably the best restaurant in town, full stop. But it’s pricey and with things like a $120 Omakase on the menu, there is an expectation of service, and this restaurant simply does not have it. The staff has literally no clue what is going on. They don’t know what they are serving, they cannot answer questions about the menu, and they cannot properly time the plating for other guests not doing Omakase. It’s just not a very good dining experience which takes away from the food which, once again, is unbelievable. And it doesn’t feel super good paying a $250 bill after receiving subpar service.
I love Shumi and the fish is always on point. Service was a little slow but understandable with the whole COVID situation.
The food was awesome and fresh, and the service was great. I think this place is the best in town. I will definitely come again
As usual, the food was excellent
Good sushi but do not go for anything else. The other non-sushi entrees are mediocre.
Food was delicious. Atmosphere was as good as can be given the circumstances of sidewalk dining on a busy evening. The service was prompt and friendly. All in all a good experience for these times and will definitely go back
Service was slow, not well versed in how to serve or remember ANYTHING. The fish is fresh, well prepared. Portions are small for sushi even if this quality.
I’ve been there before, it’s in need of better management. The chef/ owner apologized for the evening, he said he could do better the next time we dine there.
I love Shumi but not outside...We asked to be moved closer under tent to a bigger table and they told us no cause they were for larger parties. So we sat kinda crooked at the edge of the curb. Along came two other couples with only two people at each table I find that rude...We were lied to...I have been to Shumi many times before this and I loved it but I will not return until we can be seated inside ...I am sorry I love the sushi chefs David I am truly sorry for such a bad review. Food was fantastic. During these times it is great to be able to go back to our favorite restaurants. They managed in the pouring rain to serve a wonderful meal
Love the food here
My 1st time there, food was excellent. The owner David was welcoming and informative and gave us great advice on the menu. I would definitely go back.
flat out loved it
Absolutely superior sushi! The monkfish liver with toro is outstanding!
Fish, as usual was fantastic. Service......I don’t really understand the servers here- none of them will make eye contact (the kind you usually use to call the attention of someone) and while they are roaming about, none of them seem to see anything except plates that need to be cleared. I had to literally wave my hands to order, get a refill, get the check. It’s just weird and awkward. My only other complaint is that they seem to be using a streaming service for music with advertising! Good music, then 2 minute ads! Again, details!
$120 Special Omakase was completely worth it. Great value.
