Wonderful place and amazing service. 10/10!
I love the salads and I always get the scallops. Always done to perfection. My husband gets the salmon. 👍🏻👍🏻
Great! Always love Steak and Whiskey. Will go back!
The kitchen was off that night. Overcooked steak, very slow output, a bit of a mess all around. So much for the birthday dinner!
Heralded as one of the South Bays top Steak Houses, (and it's hard to judge now with Arthur J, Costa, Flemings and so many more) we were excited to go. But were the reservations too easy?Although we arrived at different times, when the entire party was seated, it still seems that they were waiting for more.
I would have had another whisky shile waiting had we been paid attention to, and a few times had to flag down our server.
the food was good, bery good, not Great, but with the cost and competition, maybe a bit more attention to detail will keep this restaurant from going the way of Abigaile and so many other restaurants....
Great menu and amazing whisky selections
We had a great time at Steak & Whiskey. Our server, Genevieve, was exceptionally friendly and helpful. Our entrees were very tasty. Great value. We'll be back.
Our experience was excellent due to our server, Viola. She was outstanding and made our night very enjoyable.
The first time I had dinner at the restaurant, it was great. This time, the scallops were undercooked and cold, the salad dressing oily and the noise level made talking impossible. There are so many other good choices in Hermosa. I won’t go back.
Been there seven or eight times, food is always, ALWAYS amazing. Looking forward to the next time!
Staff was awesome, food was fantastic we would go back anytime we get back to Hermosa!!
Restaurant tried to “give away” our reservation even though we were (legitimately) 9 minutes late. There is no parking and no valet. They cooked a medium-rare steak to well done and then, after we showed them, they said the “lighting in the dining room” makes it look more well done than it actually was.. which was a total lie. Couple next to us had same experience with the pork chop they ordered. Not worth the time nor money. Go somewhere else.
Excellent all the way around !
Great location...directly across from the Hermosa pier and boardwalk.
Was our first time, will definitely go back!!
Whiskey/bartender was great. Ambiance was great. House bread was some of the best I’ve had.
My dressed filet was terrible. There was no salt in the dish. The dressed part tasted off, something rancid.
And though this is stupid when compared to the bad entree, the steak knife was so dull, I tied to use the butter knife. It was so annoying.
Not our favorite dining experience. We had a reservation, and it became clear to us that a couple without a reservation was seated before us, when the host came to me asking if I was "Johnny." (And no one else was waiting at that point.) The website indicates valet parking, yet when we didn't find it and my spouse went in to ask about it, he was just dismissed, "We don't have valet." How about a suggestion of where to park? And update your website. I suspect there was an issue with the kitchen, as the entrees took a very long time to come out after our salad course. Cooking steaks really doesn't take that long. They were out of the wine we ordered ... remove it from the wine list if you don't have it. Won't be back.
None of our food was anything spectacular and, in fact, our appetizers/salads were not good at all. The steak - which should be what they are known for - was something I could cook better at home. The service was average: it took some time to seat us even though there was no one else waiting and once seated it took several minutes to be waited upon.
My buddy and I have dined at S&W at least a half dozen times in the past year, coming the first time because of Dine LA. Food (especially the steak) is always incredible. This last visit the service was pretty average: server was clearly disappointed we were choosing the Dine LA set menu (it’s cheaper) and several items from the menu were unavailable - we found out AFTER we had ordered. Anyway they weren’t rude, just indifferent, whereas in the past service has been as incredible as the food.
Arrived and checked in only to be told someone was still at my table but would be leaving shortly, although I did glance back to notice one table at the back that was empty and set. Told hostess I would grab a drink at the bar in the meantime. Stood at bar for about 10+ mins with two employees (bartender and the woman who would be my waitress) behind the counter walking back and forth and one of them wiping down glasses....and yet no effort was made to acknowledge my presence or ask if I wanted to order a drink. Finally bartender asks if I need something and placed drink order....only to then have hostess come over and tell me my table was ready....which ended up being the table that was empty when I walked in.
So I sit at my table and notice several waitresses pass by, and go up to the counter next to the table which was the screen where they placed orders or closed out checks. Another 15+ mins pass and my waitress(woman behind the bar earlier) comes by and says she will be right with me. 10 mins pass she comes back and I order food; requested different potato option (without caviar) and she advised that she would check with the kitchen. She comes back and say not a problem. Ordered bread and salad; salad dropped off by someone else but bread nowhere to be found. Another 5 mins I flag down waitress about bread and she runs back and it’s sent out.
Main entree arrives with potato option I asked not to be served. No one drops by to see how food was, so about 10 mins later I flag down waitress and inquire about the potatoes. I was halfway thru my steak when the potatoes finally arrived.
I get that it’s later in the evening an hour before closing, but given the dining room was fully occupied, it wasn’t like I was the only one there. I spent $120 on a steak (with drinks, app, salad) meal for one person.....and I would have much rather spent $40 at Outback because I wouldn’t have been made to feel like I was a burden. Definitely was a waste of $$$
Steak and Whisky is one of the (few) places in Hermosa where I can walk, and expect a fine dining experience within steps of my residence. Ask Andrew at the bar for his whisky sour - it's amazing. Likewise, I'd recommend that you take the staff up on offering to pair your meal with an appropriate wine or whisky. I have yet to have a bad experience, and I've likewise now tested many new varietals, some of which I've elected to add to my home bar as a result.
We've been there a couple of times before and the food and service was always very good. This time the Filet was tough and dry. Several times the servers brought out a course for the four of us, but forgot one of them. Then it took quite a while for the fourth person to get their food. The rest of us were done with that course by the time they got it. The servers were all very nice. The drinks were very good. And the rest of the food was very good.
The kitchen was horribly backed up and we waited almost an hour and a half for our first course. Luckily we had ordered some fries as a snack.
This has been one of our favorite special occasion restaurants but we will think twice about going again soon.
Great food and service, highly recommended. great salad, prime rib was perfectly cooked.
Awesome experience using dineLA menu. From start to finish service and food was excellent.
First time to this place and sadly I just wouldn't go back. There were four people in my party on a Friday night with a 6.30 reservation. No issues with the reservation and them seating us right away. We ordered two appetizers, three steaks and one fish off the menu. I had a old fashioned and enjoyed the drink. Thirty minutes in to my drink and starting my second the waitress came and said the kitchen had a mishap with the appetizers. Not sure what the mishap was but they weren't ready and the food was coming soon. So I cancelled one and said we would still like the second one. We got the appetizer about 10 mins later. Now 45+ mins at the restaurant and the food finally starts to come out. My steak (NY Strip) was fine.. perfectly cooked but the potatoes and broccolini that came with it were so so. One other steak, filet mignon, was overcooked. It was not medium-rare but well done. So we complained to the waitress and she said that we can keep it or wait another 30mins for another steak. My jaw dropped and we just look astonished at her. Oh.. she was serious. The third steak (flatiron) was good and cooked to order. The last plate, sea bass, was overcooked and dry. It was partially saved by the sauce on it but still dry fish can't be fixed. Poor showing by the tavern/whiskey bar, a total miss for a Friday night. The drinks were good but the service and quality of food was less to be enthused about.
This place is exceptional in every way - food, drinks and service ALL outstanding! Any reviewer that has a problem with either the food or service here needs to look no further than their bathroom mirror to identify their problem.
Great service, food was decent - just way overpriced. My filet was a bit overcooked and buried in sauce. Just not my type of steakhouse. Ambiance was nice - but everyone was seated way too close together which made it uncomfortable even to try to get up to go the bathroom. Glad I tried it - probably won’t be back.
Hello, Thank you for reviewing your dining experience. We are happy to hear you received great service, but it is unfortunate we didn't nailed every aspect of your meal. We would love a second chance to show you what we really can do. If you visit us on a weekday when we are a little more mellow we usually have one of our spacious booths available! I also recommend getting your filet dressed on the side; giving you complete control of how saucy you like it. Cheers, Steak&Whisky Management
At the top of a short list of special occasion restaurants for us. They have a small menu but everything is excellent, and course the whiskey selection is excellent. S+W does not overbook, ensuring a great dining experience. The oso bucco was perfect, as was the petite filet. A local gem that is improving with age.
Hello Kurt, Thank you for such a great review! The Osso Buco is hands down one of my favorite dishes on the menu. I am thrilled to hear you, too, enjoyed it! We look forward to your next special occasion with us. Cheers, Steak&Whisky Management
Viola is awesome! Food superb! Old Fashioned yummy!
Thank you for the fantastic review! We agree, Viola is pretty awesome! Glad to hear she took good care of you. Come back and see us soon. Cheers, Steak&Whisky Management
Great food! Steak was perfectly cooked medium. Whiskey flight was fun.
Thanks for the awesome review! We look forward to your next visit. Cheers, Steak&Whisky Management
the steak is amazing with the mashed potatoes
macaroni/cheese with lobster was well liked
the lobster was delicious with the butter topping
crème de for dessert was also the best
Hello Karl, Thank you for the fantastic review! We look forward to your next meal with us. Cheers, Steak&Whisky Management
Food was good. The restaurant was fairly busy, but it was easy to carry on a conversation. But not for the Travelzoo, the food would have been pricey.
Hello BPaul, Thank you for taking the time to review you dining experience. We are glad to hear you enjoyed your meal. Come join us for our daily Happy Hour sometime! Cheers, Steak&Whisky Management
It is so hard to write a bad review because my husband and I used to love this place. I am wondering if they are the next victim to the rising Hermosa rent prices because it was night and day from our previous experience here. It started off being seated almost 30 minutes after our reservation time, which I know happens and we were in no hurry and so we didn’t mind. Drinks and Brussels sprouts were still great, but the steak not so much. We both ordered the filet mignon medium rare. Mine was well-cooked, but much tougher than a filet should be. My husbands was RARE, like blue rare. We decided to say something so the manager took it back (was kind about it I should mention), but then brought out the same piece of meat just heated more through. This process dried out and toughened the meat even more than it already was. As I said I hate that I have to write a bad review for Steak and Whiskey, but when we have higher expectations for the cost. Likely no plans to return.
Poor experience and so sad what has become of this great local spot. They were “out of” two entrees, two appetizers, and two whiskeys...all on the menu...on a Saturday night at 7pm. Waitress tried to make up for it, but when the kitchen caught fire and the smoke wafted into the dining room, we knew this place had fallen apart. As we left at 9:30 - after a much delayed entree service - they had UFC fighting on the TV...not really our vibe.
Great food, great atmosphere. Some excellent cocktails. Only downside was they were out of a few items on the Menu due to it being just after the holiday weekend.
Hello Scott, Thank you for the great review! We look forward to your next visit. Cheers, Steak&Whisky Management
Food is always delicious but I just find it slightly expensive for the vibe. If it were just slightly cheaper it would be amazing.
Hello, Thank you for reviewing your last experience with us. We strive to serve great food and create an amazing experience for our guests and it sounds like we didn't hit the mark completely. We look forward to really "Wowing" you on your next visit! Cheers, Steak&Whisky Management
Really want to like this place but the burger came out cold and they made some very odd choices with sauce for the seabass and the “lobster” on lobster Mac and cheese. More like lobster sprinkles than notable or quality pieces. I live food and live nearby so sincerely hope they figure it out.
Brought the family here for a lovely dinner. Excellent food combined with great drinks and awesome service made for a fantastic evening. Fun location and decor that is decidedly non-beach. Family has already demanded a return trip over the Christmas holiday.
Hello Doug, We are beyond delighted to hear you and your family enjoyed your dinner with us. We look forward to celebrating the holidays with you! Cheers, Steak&Whisky Management
I think all the elements were there. The execution was just a little off. Was disappointed to find out that all the steaks were grass fed. It does not mention that on on the website menu, we would have probably chose another location if we had known this up front. It says all prime or dry aged prime cuts. When we got to the restaurant it said natural prime or natural dry aged prime. Natural meaning grass fed is quite the opposite of prime, has no marbling and is no where near close to the same. Appetizers were good not great and the desert was a little dry and over done. Drink menu was to die for though. Give them an A for effort and C for execution, F for price point. I have no problem paying premium pricing for premium food, but this was not that.
I had a salad (very good) and my husband had a steak that he referred to as just meh. Not where we would go next time we are craving a good steak.
Loved the food. service and atmosphere.
