One of my favorite local restaurants but perhaps Covid driven has been losing its edge and the hard to justify best part of a hundred quid a head.
1. Coming out of lock down on arrival you were asked use an alcohol run on hand, menus were accessible by mobile. Now you just arrive sit down and get handed menus. Wine list must have been touched by everyone in the restuarant.
2. Presentation of the food is still great. But the hors d'oeuvre was stone cold at the bottom of the glass. Starts we pleasant but did not make the taste buds sing. My steak main was gorgeous though, wife's halibut needed a better sauce.
3. The pudding menu seems only to change annually. Tennis ball is fun, but my chocolate could desperately do with a biscuit or something to add some texture to a pot of ganache, apart from the quinell of ice cream to the side.
4. Asked for a glass of pinot noir...got something (Merlot or a Shiraz?) but definitely not a pinot. Was a nice wine anyway so given service upstairs is a bit slow, I did not complain.
Hopefully post covid they will do better, and get back to being one of Surrey's finest.
A lovely place that is unique and has a gentle atmosphere for an intimate dinner or special occasion. Amazing cocktails and a unique menu that you wouldn’t find anywhere else. We had the taste of Mexico menu and it was amazing. I can honestly say I’d never had any of the dishes and each one tasted amazing. Nothing weird just unique and well made. Thank you for a wonderful evening.
consistently excellent - already booked again - limited menu but something for everyone and can adapt to suit taste. Great staff and very friendly.
I had booked Stovell's for my birthday lunch, and was some what disappointed. I must first make the point that the food was delicious. We had the three course lunch menu, of which every dish had an incredible balance of flavours and presentation was second to none.
The restaurant was three quarters full when we arrived, to which we were greeted with our temperatures being taken and led to our table. The COVID measures were much appreciated and clearly well thought about.
My disappointment came with the overall service and experience throughout the three hour service.
Everyone appreciates the offer of another bottle of wine, however when you're in the middle of a conversation and the waitress cuts across you, to offer for the 3rd time, it can come across as more of a sales pitch than a question. Furthermore, when waiting staff reach across customers to top glasses up, (rather than going around the table), it cuts the conversation once again. We were over charged for one of our bottle's of wine, which created a slightly sour.
I also appreciate that it's great to have a rapport with waiting staff and customers, but I think that telling customers how much your nails cost (unprompted!) crosses the professionalism line.
When asked if we could bring a 'cake' or celebratory dish for my birthday desert, Stovell's informed us this was against their celebratory policy (completely understand), but they would bring out a birthday platter with desert. This didn't happen. Quite the disappointment, given the recommendation had come from a friend who commended Stovell's on their attention to detail.
I could go on! I understand that COVID has hit the hospitality industry harder than any, and that there is a 'survival' mentality. However, being a rosette restaurant, I would expect a much higher standard of service, without the repeat business/sales pitching. I believe there are better restaurants across Surrey, that provide this for the same price.
The table we were allocated was very cramped, when I asked if there was an alternative table I was told that all the tables were booked. When we left an hour and half later four tables were still free. Not very customer focussed.
A wonderful meal, served by cheerful, helpful staff in a relaxed environment with other like minded diners - goodness it was just like the food old days pre-covid
An oasis in which to forget all the chaos going on around us......
Thank you Stovell’s!
We visited Stovells on Friday evening, this was the first time since the COVID situation had started. The experience had changed, but not in a bad way at all. I was impressed with the Covid measures in place. The food was excellent as was the service, especailly Mariana. The service was prompt but not rushed, it was a concern with everything having to shut at 22:00 nowadays we would be possibly clock watching and rushed through. This wasn't the case at all, we had a very relaxed evening with excellent food and drink. FYI we booked table at 19:15 and was easily finished by 21:40.
Absolutely first class. The young lady serving us is a absolute credit to the industry. Arguably the best service I’ve had. A star in the making ! Thanks again
A delightful restaurant, the Sunday Lunch menu was utterly delicious. Would love to come back to try their tasting menu. A truly wonderful experience.
Loved it. Great food and service. Also, very safe feeling with Covid processes.
Food was great on the whole and so was wine. Gin and tonics at almost £20 each however was too expensive!
Excellent, lovely meal and felt very safe Varied menu choices, all very appealing.
Disappointing. Stovells has reliably been our ‘special occasions restaurant for the last 8 years. Service, food, ambience all on point and whilst certainly not cheap, the price tag reflected the experience.
However, on this occasion we left disappointed. The service was average. No ‘special’ attention as you would expect at this price point. Our drinks order was taken wrong meaning my wife’s drink had to be returned twice. The al a carte menu seems to have become the forgotten/poor relation to the Mexican taste menu. If the chef does not want to serve it...don’t offer it! The wine list is dramatically reduced and does not reflect the list available to view on the website. That said, we did find a very nice wine to enjoy, but again were disappointed to find ourselves with empty glasses and searching for a staff member to top us up! There were only 14 diners in the restaurant so hardly rushed off their feet.
So, having always enjoyed great service, great food, great drinks, great wine and great ambiance for a hefty price tag...
This time we received poor service distinctly average food, drink mistakes, poor wine selection...for the same hefty price!!
If it wasn’t my wife’s birthday, I would have protested when the bill arrived.
It’s a shame. This was always a special place for us.
We dined at Stovells for my partners 30th birthday. The food and service was exceptional as always
A fascinating menu to set the taste buds alight and the dishes themselves lived up to expectations.
Fabulous food, and super friendly, professional staff.
We’ll be back!
The service was very slow. We were phoned and asked to be there on time at 7.30. It took until 8.15 to get a beer. Very disappointing. We were ignored for far too long.
The food was good but the service did not match.
The whole evening was a delight. The staff made the evening even that much fun! Specially Mariana. What a beautiful & charming girl! The food was a bonus! In a word, well worth return visit after 2 or mayb even 3 yrs shying away from Stovell due to previous staff was abit aloof ! But what a visit it turn out to be. Absolutely enjoy our night w gd friends which we haven’t seen for a while since lock down. If in doubt of social distancing, not to worry, they have it all covered. Can’t recommend enough! Five star absolutely! Day of visit 2/10/2020 for dinner
The food was outstanding, the wine very good if very pricey for what we received.
The disappointment was that we booked to eat at 7, and we were literally ushered out of the restaurant for the 10pm closure. Because we had the Taste of Mexico menu, we had no idea what was coming out of the kitchen next but we had no chance to enjoy the final chocolates and coffee was not even offered because it had taken so long to get through the menu.
So yes, we really enjoyed it but it would have been so much better had we had a chance to finish the experience in a better way. the prices for the wine and for the water were VERY high too.
The food was very good but we felt it was a little rushed towards the end as they missed of a coarse. There was some confusion with the bill in over charging us on a couple of items. Service was good thou
Started well with amuse-bouche, but disappointed with crab starter and my duck main course was pretty tough. We felt the meals could have been more generous .
Waited quite a while when paying the bill, although it was only the second night of 10pm. restriction.
Nice evening at Stovell’s for my wife’s milestone birthday.
It was the second day of the 10pm curfew and the staff were handling as well as they could. The meal by that we had was nice and the service was excellent. Some other tables didn’t fare as well though and treated the staff particularly rudely. May make sense for the restaurant to reduce their covers slightly.
Just a minor annoyance, I was a little surprised by some flies around our table, wouldn’t have expected them in that place. Otherwise it was a good experience.
Very good food, very good service. A great experience, good value for money
A very different fine dining experience with our choice of the Mexican experience menu.
So flavoursome and extremely enjoyable feast. Such a welcome change from the traditional French cuisine which is also served here and also looks amazing. With new Covid rules in place where you have to be finished by 10pm I would allow yourselves 2.5 hrs to fully enjoy the Mexican experience menu. We allowed ourselves 2 hrs and it was a bit rush towards the end.
I would also say our server was so bubbly and pleasant. Extremely knowledgeable and put a smile on our faces with her infectious personality. We will definitely be back.
Excellent food and excellent service. Can't recommend highly enough.
The Service was slow at the start and not to the expect standard.
Chateaubriand was terrible - chewy and fatty.....should not have been served.
Venue is lovely and with some things corrected could be very good.
Didn’t live up to reviews we had seen. Not good value
My husband and I celebrated our anniversary with dinner at Stovells and the entire evening was absolutely wonderful from start to finish. We’ve always loved the venue - the low ceilings, period features and the sense that you’re nestled away somewhere very special. We enjoyed a drink in the small bar before moving to our table. Just the right buzz and atmosphere in the room
- not too loud, or too quiet. A formal setting to remind you that you’re somewhere special for dinner and yet with a relaxed and convivial ambience, cultivated in part by the friendly and attentive serving staff, who impressed us throughout.
The food was absolutely delicious - we had the Cornish Crab and a flower broth (small but delicious and quite unique in flavour) followed by the halibut (Deliciously cooked and accompanied by a delectable carrot purée) and the beef Wellington which I’m told was deconstructed and delicious. We shared the chips and the best tasting chard we’ve ever had - cooked over an oak fire. Rich and full of depth, although It was one of the side dishes, it was one of my favourites. We finished with a chocolate mousse which was light and yet full of flavour. Finished our three courses feeling satisfied but not too full which is always a good way to end the evening! We will certainly be visiting again, it was a hugely enjoyable evening and one that felt special.
We had a nice evening for our 30th wedding anniversary but sadly it wasn't "special" as I was hoping it would be. We thought that there were some significant issues which I should have raised on the evening, but instead I chose not to create an atmosphere with the family celebration. Firstly the staff were very good, the wine, that was in stock (our first choice was not available) was very good. The Beef Wellington was tasteless (x2) The Chateaubriand was well cooked and tasty but was at a £30 supplement. The roasted vegetables that we had were inedible, they tasted burnt (well they actually were, but I think that was how they were supposed to be), the Chocolate mousse was average. The Foie gras was superb. We did buy a bottle of non vintage champagne, but felt that the nearly £150 a head was too much for the fare we received and to be fair we have spoken to the establishment about the evening....I think we both learned something, but I do not think I will be visiting again, which is a shame because the ambiance was nice as was the location for us.
Really lovely restaurant and the food was so nice. The staff couldn't do enough to help and were forever checking we were ok. Definately recommend.
Service was extremely friendly though we felt it a little overbearing at times especially the welcome 'you have made the right decision dining here', 'you are going to have an amazing dinner' etc etc.
We waited around 45 mins between starters and mains by which time I was too tired to care (perhaps we should have booked in earlier than pur 8.15pm slot), though diners that had ordered after us were served before us and had almost finished by the time ours arrived, the reason given was that 'the kitchen was very busy' I was given a drink as an apology for the delay though my partner wasn't (perhaps due to being pregnant and clearly having reached my limit of comfort), I didn't really want the drink (and wasn't asked) but at least it was an acknowledgement of an apology.
I asked if I could order dessert and the waiter kindly replied that I could give my order to anyone working there (not just the lady waiting our table) but then walked off without taking my order leading to another wait.
The starters were simply average, the main of pork was good, and the dessert was good but not outstanding, perhaps we ordered the wrong things but overall we were disappointed.
This was the second time at the restaurant, the first 6 years ago was excellent and we couldn't wait to return. The setting is beautiful and the concept excellent, unfortunately our experience this time was very different, such a shame!
It was our anniversary treat and we had a lovely evening.
The staff were very attentive and we felt very well looked after.
The food was amazing. We had the Cote du Beouf which was the best ever.
A truly wonderful evening. Thank you Stovells.
The restaurant was everything it claimed to be. The Covid precautions were meticulous. We felt very safe. The service was charming and attentive and the food, though sparing, was superb.
We will definitely revisit.
Every visit to this restaurant was a uniquely delightful experience. Excellent food, friendly staff and great ambience. Makes you want to return for more.
My daughter and son in law treated me as it was a very special birthday!! We had a lovely table, the service was exceptional and the food was excellent. Thank you for my birthday treat too.
Fantastic evening! Food and service faultless! Definitely going back!
Amazing food with superb service
Great experience and value for money
Lovely meal with a lovely ambience and fantastic service. Really attentive and well worth a visit! Will be re-acquainting.
Fabulous food and lovely atmosphere. Cannot fault the service and would definitely recommend to anyone.
The meat we all had was not edible. Worst Sunday meal I have ever experienced. Staff were very friendly but said nothing when we clearly didn’t enjoy the meal.
