First sushi experience in Japan and well worth the cost and commute. This was the best sushi dining I’ve ever experienced; the 13-piece nigiri course opened up my eyes to the possibilities and subtleties of well executed sushi. Given that it’s one of a handful of places on OpenTable, it’s a no brainer if you’re looking for an authentic sushi experience when visiting Tokyo.
This restaurant is tucked away in the lower level of a small street about a 15 minute cab from Shinjuku. The restaurant only has around 10 seats, all in front of the chef who creates each piece of nigiri and places it in front of you. The experience was a little intimidating at first, as we speak little/no Japanese and were surrounded by locals peering at our attempt to align with all proper etiquette and customs of eating sushi in Japan. The waiter spoke decent English and explained the dishes as the meal progressed... It cost about $280 USD for 2 of us (including a bottle of sake). Though dress code is ‘business casual’ the vibe inside is very laid back.
My family had a wonderful time and unique experience at Sushi Fukumoto. We were in Tokyo for a few days and I made a booking a couple of months in advanced since I wanted to make sure I could get the date that I needed.
We were seated at the bar right in front of where the master was working. They have staff that explained what we were eating and most importantly, how to enjoy the sushi. We also had a 4 year old with us and they were very accommodating. We ordered the complete omakase and were able to share some of the dishes with our child.
We stayed in Shinjuku and the restaurant was just a train ride and short walk away. Nice neighborhood and easy to find.
If you are looking for a special experience with some out-of-this-world sushi, I would definitely recommend this restaurant.
One of the best Sushi in Tokyo. Chef Fukumoto-san is great as well as the staff. Sushi is fresh and perfect. Looking forward to going back next trip.
Having omakase at Sushi Fukumoto was delicious and perfect. Thank you!!!
It’s perfect ! Thank you
The ambiance is really nice, the chef cooks in front of you and that’s a great taste experiment !
This restaurant was a wonderful experience. The food, ambiance, and service were delightful. We have experienced several omakase sushi both in Japan and the United States. Sushi Fukumoto rates as one of our best experiences.
Excellent sushi! Unforgettable- multi-sensory experience with fresh seafood. The chef knows the perfect way to present the best essence of each material and ingredient - he is an artist of gastronomy! Highly recommend.
Best sushi I’ve ever had. The staff is also very friendly to English speakers (our hostess showed us a translation with pictures before every piece of nigiri that the chef prepared). Definitely lives up to its Michelin star reputation.
We were celebrating our engagement and this was definitely an experience we will never forget! Each piece of art that chef Fukumoto prepared for us was SO Delicious. It’s so hard to explain. Each piece of sushi was so well balanced. Between the fish, rice, and perfect seasoning. We had the Omakase meal and by the end I was so stuffed. It’s definitely expensive but worth the cost. The staff was so kind and explained in English what the chef was doing, what we were eating, and how to eat it. Absolutely recommend this place. A wonderful experience! Thank you Chef Fukumoto and Nozomi for a lovely dinner!
Very nice restaurant and experience. This was our first time in a high-end sushi restaurant and we can indeed say that the sushi was the best we have ever eaten. The ambiance was fairly intimate (the counter has around 10 seats), refined but friendly. We didn't speak Japanese, but the waitress spoke English and translated to us the names of the fish used in the various sushi pieces. Even chef Fukumoto tried to make some conversation with the waitress acting as an interpreter :) Being able to observe the chef working and the preparation of each piece was definitely an interesting experience.
The value for money was good (we took the sushi menu) compared to other Michelin-starred restaurants in Tokyo, but keep in mind that this is not the kind of restaurant where you get full on the cheap!
Torneremo
Fantastics! Chef was friendly. Food was really good for the prices.
I love the simplicity of this place. Everything is good, food are superb. Chef is friendly, staffs are nice. Variety of sake.
We went for an engagement dinner for my brother-in-law and his fiancé. By far the most amazing omokase sushi experience we had in our life!
Superb food for a very very reasonable price. Chef Fukumoto and his team were very friendly and explained all the ingredients (and their origins) in our omakase despite us not being able to speak Japanese. The dishes were perfectly seasoned, including the non-sushi dishes. We had a wonderful time there and would definitely recommend this place to our friends who are heading to Tokyo.
Great service and price for a Michelin star restaurant. The server we had also spoke English and helped translate what the chef was saying.
Amazing omakase menu, friendly staff translating for chef, one of the few Michelin star restaurants that can be booked in Tokyo on opentable or without a concierge service. Impeccable food, would highly recommend!
Staff can speak English well. Quality of the ingredients were OK. Though unfortunately the sushi chef smokes tobacco.
Best sushi I've ever had. This place takes minimalist cuisine to another level.
First meal of the trip.
It was hard to communicate with the staff and as a foreigners it was disadvantage. The food was good but we experienced better.
This is by far the best meal I’ve had in Tokyo, neigh, in my LIFE!! He made me like sea urchin, and I’ve never liked sea urchin until now.
Amazing sushi and delightful service!
Fantastic quality seafood unlike anything we have ever tasted before. Fancy but not snooty. Welcoming and friendly staff. Attentive without being annoying. An unforgettable meal and definitely worth the yen.
This is the best meal I’ve ever had in my life.
Amazing experience! Unbelievable sushi! Wonderful hospitality by Sushi Master and Nozomi. Highly recommend!
10 stars. I would pour my heart out if I start describing my experience here, such a great staff, team, family.
One of the best sushi meals I have ever had!!!!!
Fresh food and nice service
Best dining experience I’ve ever had. Chef Fukumoto is absolutely charming! Food was amazing. Very impressed. Worth traveling to for. 🖤
Perfect nothing more to had,
Food amazing chef a waitress perfect
Delicious and affordable Michelin star restaurant. Staff was attentive and helpfully described each course. Chef was very talented.
Excellent food and an enjoyable evening
Although the chef didn't use super expensive sushi topping, it's really a surprise that all sushi pieces were super delicious. The chef techniques and skills are so awesome that he could make not-so-expensive item shining out like that.
Next level sushi.
Unbelievably kind staff and a true professional chef. Would highly reccomend to any sushi lovers.
Couldn't be happier! : ) A very nice place in pleasant surroundings. Great service, super-friendly people and beautiful food (Michelin Star well deserved). Everyone was very professional but easy-going at the same time, very polite and very patient (with our 2 year old son, as well). You just couldn't ask for more.
