The Birley Arms Hotel & Restaurant
Can’t review as the place was shut and apparently has been for some time
It was closed and had been closed for some weeks judging by the mail on the mat. Travelled a good way to get there, not impressed opentable.
Turned up on Valentine's evening for a meal only to find it closed and in total darkness
When we parked outside we were informed the pub was closed until sometime in March for refurbishment! So we had to go elsewhere for lunch. Bizarre when we had booked online!!
You allowed us to book a table and the restaurant was closed!! No notice on the door to advise why! It was the poor weather day but we would have thought we’d have had a call to say we couldn’t book or even just a note on the door so we knew what was going on!! Not great
I tried phoning the restaurant several times on Saturday 1st Feb in order to book for that night. The phone was never answered. At about 4pm that same day I booked a meal for two at 7.15pm. I got confirmation back that the booking was confirmed. Can you therefore imagine my HORROR when I turned up at 7.10pm to discover the restaurant was CLOSED !!!! No message on phone, and my booking was accepted. Have you ever heard anything like it. Shocking. Dreadful. Time wasting. Lazy. Uncaring.
Very disappointed to arrive at the Birley for a big birthday booking to find the place closed and in darkness.
It has gone bust!!! And you are still tweeting how great it is after the event!!!
Had a lovely Sunday Lunch. The plates were hot and food hot which is good. Staff all very helpful. Only criticism would have liked more Gravy ( it was SO good)
This is s lively place food is always outstanding and great service we went for my sister birthday and everyone loved the place
Quiet but friendly atmosphere for lunch with our dog. Sat at a table in a quiet nook with plenty of space. The star of the show was the sharing seafood platter, absolutely beautiful. Highly recommend.
Food was good, but service very poor.
After waiting 20 minutes for someone to take our order I had to ask the girl tidying the tables to get someone to take our order
Wouldn't mind but it wasn't exactly busy.
Excellent food and friendly staff. On first look at the menu, the prices do appear to be quite high. However, once the food was plated and served, it was totally worth the price. Exceptional value for money.
The food is excellent but the last twice we have been the service didn't match up there was a big party there when we ate but we had booked and they accepted our booking but when we waited 40 minutes for them to take our order and we asked how long we were told we would have to wait till the big party was served. The previous occasion we ate there we waited that long for service we gave up on dessert and left
Food very good. Service could have been nicer if the waitress smiled more did seem to be rushed off her feet.
Our whole experience was extremely poor. We arrived at what should have been a busy lunchtime to find a relatively empty car park and upon entering the premises were met by only a party of four in the conservatory who soon left leaving just ourselves a customers with not even a single person at the bar. The atmosphere was nonexistent and despite being the only customer in the place the service was appalling. We were offered table water but never received the glasses. Some time later a waiter appeared and upon enquiring whether there was any soup on the menu as a starter some time later a response was received, The online menu did not accord with the somewhat reduced version provided and it was decided to omit a starter and proceed to our main course. My wife and I ordered the fish which batter was soggy, a friend ordered the gammon for which he required a steak knife to cut through it and another friend ordered a seafood pancacke where the prawns were too tough to eat. We decided to omit any one of the four sweets on the menu and needed to ask for a glass to be changed which had quite a large chip out of it. Upon paying the bill I was asked if everything was alright and advised the waiter everything was not alright insofar as the whole experience had been appalling. We have attended the Birley Arms upon many occasions but will not be attending again. Previously our experience has been most enjoyable and I did ask if the establishment had changed hands to be informed it had. Upon previous visits the restaurant had been "buzzing" with a great atmosphere and excellent quality food but all this appears now to be well in the past. Why the service was so poor with great delays and why the food was of the poorest quality I have tasted in many a year with only four customers in and later on another three I do not know but my whole experience of what should have been a celebratory occasion was completely ruined by appalling service and unacceptable food. Very poor!
We thoroughly enjoyed our evening, the service was excellent and the food well presented and delicious. We will definitely be going back because, apart from value for money, the service was excellent.
Didn’t have the booking even though booked through open table - took food order in week before and emailed it but they didn’t have it!
To be honest we were disappointed as we came 4 years ago & loved it, returned to the area again & decided to visit your hotel, choice of food very limited, after 5 o,clock, we went to the Ship in the following night & was very pleased.....
Excellent food, good menu and reasonable- will recommend.
Staff were friendly.
A friend stayed for 2 nights and was very satisfied.
Thank you- another one high on my list.
Not the place to go if your vegetarian, I would expect more choice . There was some confusion over my order and we ended up eating our main course separately . I ordered a Sunday lunch without the meat as there was no vegetarian option but after 3 attempts of trying to order this I ended up with vegetables and a few new potatoes , after my other half had finished his main
Course . The quality of the food was excellent and I was given a discount for the confusion so not all bad , but in other establishments I have enjoyed some very tasty meat free roast dinners unfortunately this wasn’t one .
We were first shown to a table that wasn't suitable for six people due to the leg room. When I asked for us to be moved I was told there were a lot of bookings - not sure if that meant we couldn't be moved. I explained WE were a booking and were then moved to a table set for six in the conservatory. Apart from this hiccup, everything went smoothly. Service good and staff very personable, no fault with the food. Nice that the conservatory is relatively music free.
We ate here on Sunday 28th July and chose off the Sunday Lunch menu. We had visited the Birley Arms about 4 weeks previously and I would say that experience was a lot better with better service plus the Sunday Lunch menu was more extensive and included Lamb Loin which was excellent. On our recent visit we found that the choice of the Sunday Lunch menu was limited, on our previous visit the waitress had advised that we could choice 2 or 3 courses off the Sunday and Al A Carte menus, the waiter didn't discuss the menu options with us this time. All that said the food was excellent and we will certainly be vising again very soon.
We had a lovely meal here for our anniversary, we booked but it was not too busy, ( wed , early eve) so possibly didn't need to. This is a Gastro pub, the portions are not massive but all beautifully presented and hot. We both had 3 courses, 1 beer and a bottle of wine, under £90 total.
All were very tasty and certainly enough for me. They do a lighter menu for daytime.
The service was good and we didn't have to wait too long between courses. I did point out ( lightheartedly) to the Italian ?? waiter that he brought us soup spoons for the dessert instead of dessert spoons but it tasted same so not a massive problem.
We will definately be back.
Booked the table for Sunday lunch, not necessary as place was very quiet, unfortunately though service left a lot to be desired, we seemed to wait ages. When order came, however the food was good. Eat here regularly and generally everything is ok, perhaps a hiccup on a Sunday. Won’t stop me returning.
The food was absolutely spectacular. I personally chose the steak and ale pie and it was mouth-wateringly good! I would definitely choose it again... There was extensive choice on the menu and i'll definitely return as there are other dishes I would love to try! Staff couldn't be more polite, friendly and helpful - I would definitely recommend! Thank you
Like this gastro pub a lot
Nice atmosphere, good value Sunday Lunch menu, nice beef and duck course and ice cream to die for
Our friends had a sharing platter and they thoroughly enjoyed it
I’d go again, but it’s not particularly easy to find, but well worth the trip
Tried the Birley Arms breakfast for the first time having been twice previously and enjoyed superb Lite Bite lunches.
We weren’t disappointed, it was excellent. We arrived shortly before they stopped serving breakfast, so it was the lull between breakfast and lunch and was very quiet.
Two of the party ordered the large full English, 2 eggs (we chose poached which were cooked perfectly!), 2 delicious sausages, 2 rashers of bacon, Bury black pudding, beans and a tomato (that had been cooked rather than given a fright under the grill for 2 seconds!) and toast. All freshly prepared, delicious and hot. Thoroughly enjoyed everything.
The third member of the group ordered the Rosti. This consisted of; smoked salmon, spinach, poached eggs and Béarnaise sauce served on a rosti. “One of the nicest breakfasts I’ve ever had” was the comment when her plate was empty!
All the meals were well presented, and the service was attentive but not intrusive.
Wouldn't hesitate to recommend.
Very good food and service, would recommend the Birley Arms
Love the BIrley Arms - great food and always plenty of choice. The bar area is not particularly relaxing to sit (its a bit like a Premier Inn) and it needs to be made more comfortable with a cosier atmosphere. I'm not too keen on the conservatory are at the back where we sat, although you get a nice view of the garden, but inside the actual restaurant is great and the food as I say is delicious. Never disappointed. Hopefully it will get even more popular as the new houses are built alongside it. :) xx
Very hard working staff who catered to our every need. Very pleasant and amenable.
We had the lunch light menu it was very good and good value for money
We have just moved into the area and were looking forwards to eating at the Birley Arms as the reviews seemed pretty good. How disappointed we were. It was noisy (but that isn't the fault of the staff). The service was good but the reason we was there was for the food. I looked on the internet for the Sunday menu and was quite impressed, there were a couple of starters i was keen to try but when the menus were passed to us we were told the internet menu differed (it certainly did that) the starter 2 people chose was the liver parfait, which should be light and silky, what we got was solid. The chips came with a free black eye on each chip and the fish was an insipid colour. I won't go on but we will judge with our pockets and will not be returning. Very Let down.
1st visit to Birley Arms, some friends go regularly so we thought we would try.
Service was good overall but had to wait for the bill as staff were taking to other I assume regulars and were not recognising signs of other guests.
Food was definitely pub grub and we would not rush back personally as we have other favourite restaurants that we would prefer to visit. Also found the restaurant rather noisy. Doors banging and plates being dropped. Perhaps we picked a bad night for the staff. Otherwise food was fine and atmosphere was ok as it was very busy.
The food was one of the best meals we have had for a while! All four of us had excellent meals and would happily recommend the service was a little slow and our table was next to the door to the tables outside so there was a constant stream of traffic and was very cold every time the door opened
The food was first class and reasonably priced, the staff were excellent
we booked our table on line and arrived 5 mins early they said table not ready will be about 10 mins infant it was 50 mins later. Starter not good but the main course was great
The first time in years to the birley arms last time was when it was just a pub as soon as you enter you know its going to be a good experience the staff where excellent from start to finish the food was fantastic a very plesant suprise i have and would recommend the birley arms to everyone. Brilliant.
Overall very enjoyable. However, disappointed that having informed you of my sisters birthday,
there was gesture made.
What a fantastic place
