The Blackwall Barn and Lodge
Pros: Food mostly good, mixed drinks very good, waitress was lovely and was a saving grace for the evening.
Cons: Husband and I were celebrating our wedding anniversary and I wish we'd gone somewhere else. Finding a parking spot took 20 minutes even though they have a decent sized lot (lucky we left early!). Hostess was not welcoming. Was on the phone when we arrived (understandable), so a second person came up and confirmed our reservation. When I got home I had an email from OpenTable admonishing me for missing our reservation! When the hostess became available she seated the party of two that came in behind us (no reservation) before seating us. We just sort of stood around awkwardly in the entry for a good while (there's no bench or anything) before finally getting to our table (which had been clear when we arrived). The noise level is high, so don't take a date there if you want to have a good conversation. The decor is cute, but very faux rustic. I had seen this restaurant billed as "farm to table" on OpenTable - there's no way that's accurate. The menu is large and we asked the waitress a question about a menu item and she had to ask the kitchen (understandable) and THE KITCHEN SAID THEY DIDN'T KNOW! Farm to table or not, that's never a great sign when you're paying over a hundred dollars for a meal for two. For the most part the food was tasty but not amazing - the soup was particularly delicious and the brussels sprouts on the side of my main were yummy, but my fish came on a bed of "saffron risotto" which tasted of nothing and the bread pudding is nothing to write home about. Our waitress really was fantastic, but everyone else seemed to be working against her - at one point when she was giving us the specials a gentleman who I assume was a manager straight up interrupted her mid-sentence to talk to her about a different table! It certainly wasn't the worst dining experience I've ever had, but it left A LOT to be desired.
Beautiful atmosphere. Service was horrible- messed up simple orders, food took forever, 30 minutes for a manager to fix check errors, etc...... They are really under staffed and under trained. Food was slightly above average.
Service was very slow, not sure if our waiter was new. There were 4 of us, my husband and I got there first. I told my husband if we were there alone because of how bad the service was I would have left. I had cream of chicken soup, which had NO chicken in it but an overload of mushrooms which I do not like and wouldn’t have ordered if I knew mushrooms were in it. The restaurant is beautiful and the menu offers lots of variety. We did go a month ago for happy hour and sat at the bar, which was a great experience. Their chicken cob salad is AMAZING!
Food and service were excellent but the noise level in the main dining area is really high. Very difficult to have a conversation.
As always, we loved the food at Blackwall Barn. It is always noisy, so we expect that. We were seated in the back right next to the doors leading to the Barn event space, and the anniversary party was ongoing ($125 a ticket - too pricey for our group), so there was added noise from the back. Still, we enjoyed our meals and the service was excellent.
It would help to have a few more tables available for parties larger than 4. I had a hard time making my reservation on Open Table for 5 people - I had to email to change it to 5 since the system wouldn't allow it, and when you call the restaurant, they say they don't take reservations more than a week before (but Open Table does? Very strange and confusing). The manager was nice enough to email me back and change our reservation to 5 people, but the system needs to be fixed.
Awesome first experience!
Our first visit. We like the ambiance of the Lodge. The Barn was less warm at least to our taste, and physically was too cold for us the night we were there. Food was great. I had the pork chop, charred on the outside, tender inside, served with mashed sweets, asparagus, and cooked apples. Salad was outstanding. Service was a bit slow, possibly due to the place being super busy. As a result they overlooked serving us bread or biscuit. We will return though to try other menu items. The menu is wide ranging, and seems to have something for every palate.
Went here on a date night. Loved the ambiance and decor! Great food and music. Service was awesome.
Food was excellent and service was pretty good. It's a bit noisy if you're looking for a quiet dinner. But it is great to have this restaurant in this part of the county.
Always an enjoyable experience! Met a girlfriend for lunch and it was her first time...she enjoyed it!! Michael is excellent. Can’t wait to return.
Our Server was excellent and the food was very good. Our rating is 4 starts simply because it was our first time at Blackwall Barn. We will return and we would recommend it to friends. The noise level of Energetic is perfect for this establishment. The customers fill the floor space and the noise level is a little high but we could converse. Blackwall is worth a visit.
Sent cup of tea back three times before water was hot. One of 3 meals was luke warm at best.
The food wasn’t as good as I was hoping. The atmosphere is nice, very different. Country meets modern.
We arrived on the evening of 10/19/19 for dinner and we had a reservation for 5:15. The young ladies hosting were very unorganized! Then the hostess tried to seat us at a table right at the hostess stand where everyone was gathered waiting to be seated. We immediately turned that down and they were able to locate a table in the middle of the room. I was very surprised, as new as your restaurant is, how poor the lay out is . Not enough thought put into where tables would be and how much room needed between the tables to allow for flow of staff and customers.
Once we were seated the waitress was very friendly and took care of us nicely. My other complaint was how rushed we felt in the middle of the meal. My husband and I were still eating dinner and the waitress was asking for our dessert order. We declined the dessert and she immediately brought the bill with food and wine still being eaten.
Having 2 sons it the restaurant business, I understand being busy, but the customer should NEVER feel rushed, especially with the prices you are charging!!!!!
Yes the food was very good but you need to work on a few items before we will return.
I love this place so much. It’s beautiful and comfortable.
Danielle our server was absolutely wonderful. Food was delicious as usual.
The restaurant is absolutely gorgeous, particularly the outdoor area. The drinks and dessert were enjoyable. The food was a bit hit or miss. For example, the crab and avocado was actually crab topped guacamole. I probably would not order an entree again but I would certainly return for the drinks.
Menu looked awesome but food was average. I ordered a side of garlic, spinach, and mushrooms and it didn’t have any garlic in it and it was overly greasy. Not very farm to table healthy in my opinion. It was a $6 side dish that the staff/server could have taken off the bill but didn’t offer to, even after it was kindly pointed out and acknowledged. I won’t be back and hate to say I won’t recommend. The place looks awesome, great ambiance, but the customer service is lacking.
Very busy place and very noisy even on the patio but we had a reservation and were seated immediately upon arrival. Every staff member we interacted with was terrific.
One in our party was a vegan and was pleased with the option of a vegan menu. Ordered the portobello mushroom steak and said it was delicious. A negative was no vegan dessert option and no almond milk (or any no type of non-dairy) for an after dinner cappuccino.
Some at our table had the recommended crab dip (thanks to server Bethlehem) and said it was the best they had ever tasted.
We will return but not on a busy Saturday night and see if the noise level is better during the week.
Service and food were great. It’s a bit loud. We had a great time.
Great service and food; friends loved it
An excellent establishment. Absolutely over the top! Our service was above and beyond what I could’ve expected. Beautiful decor and ambiance. Food was masterfully plated and delicious. Overall, my favorite dining experience in Gambrills! Must try the corn succutash!!
Took 30 minutes on Friday evening to get drinks. Didn't have two different wines that we ordered (Riesling & Rossa). Finally got my draft, but still took additional 10 minutes to get the 3rd wine choice. The server/manager outside did comp our 1st set of drinks, but don't understand how outside bar could get so far behind on a Friday evening (5:30). Wouldn't a crowd be expected for a Friday? How long does it really take to pour a draft beer & pour a glass of wine? We had our appetizer, before we got our drinks.... Just didn't set the tone for a good evening after a long week at work. Was a date night for my wife & I as she was never at your restaurant before, but not as enjoyable as anticipated. Staff were friendly, but drink issue set the tone for the evening I'm afraid.....
A bit on the expensive side and room very noisy.
We were looking for somewhere to celebrate our anniversary so we selected this restaurant. We booked the table on opentable and noted it was our anniversary. We ordered the mussel appetizer which had plenty of mussels but lacking in flavor. My wife ordered the Lamb chops which she really liked. I ordered the Pork Osso Buco with mashed potatoes and roasted vegetables. The pork shank was very tender. The sauce that came with it was really sweet and not mixed very well there were lumps of dissolved sugar. We had the Smith island cake for dessert. I think this came from a different Smith Island than the one in Md. The price paid for the value received wasn't comparable. The meals are pricey here. Before I forget they never acknowledge our Anniversary other restaurants booked on opentable have. I give it a very generous 3 stars.
Showed up early for our reservation and was seated immediately. Staff very helpful on wine choice and food was excellent
We had a fine meal and our server Jimmy was top notch! a number of folks from the staff came to our table during our visit and asked if everything was satisfactory. The food was prepared wonderfully and we totally enjoyed ourselves!
Loved the service. Comfortable atmosphere. Shrimp and grits were delicious. Fast service.
We had a 7:15pm reservation. Had to wait 25 minutes for a table. Stephanie was very helpful..offered us drinks and was working to get the table by the fire place clearer out. Seated 25 minutes later. Restaurant has a very good vibe to it. We started with drinks and the charcuterie tray. Cheeses, fruit, jam and mustard were lovely. Would love a charcuterie tray with all cheeses and fruit as I don't eat pork, but my husband enjoyed the meats. I had the short ribs and my husband had the lamb special. Both dishes were REALLY good. So much food! Had part of it boxed up to take home. Had the cheesecake for my birthday dessert..absolutely delicious! Loved that our server Nate (who is really awesome) and Stephanie continually checked on us throughout the night to make sure we were good and had everything we needed. We enjoyed talking and joking with them. We also met Armando and enjoyed talking with him as well. Great staff, great food. We will definitely be back.
We requested a quiet table away from bar area for 34th anniversary dinner. The table was nice with big comfy chairs right by the fireplace BUT right in the bar area and next to the door leading to the outdoor seating area so lots of cool drafts every time someone came thru the door which was quite often. It was also very loud! However, we still enjoyed our dinner nonetheless. Our server Nate was great and my filet was cooked perfectly and was delicious. My husband had chicken n waffles and the chicken was a bit overcooked and surprisingly all the pieces but the breast had the bones which wasn’t easy to eat with the waffles. May have been easier to eat on a plate vs the wooden board.
Food was outstanding. Service was excellent. Would definitely return.
Really good food. Nice atmosphere.
Excellent dining experience!
Our server Ryan was perfect, he made us feel special and comfortable. Can’t wait to go back!
Main dining room was very noisy (on a Sunday evening!) so we asked to sit outside, which was better. Thankfully the weather allowed for that. Food was great, service was great. Will return but suggest they invest in some sound proofing. Love the decor and location is good, parking was easy.
Portion sizes were a bit small for cost and quality of cuisine.
Food was poorly prepared , flavorless and very overpriced for the quality
I had no idea a place like this was so close to me. It's pretty cool. A little pricey for the ambience so relaxed. But it's really different. Very trendy.
