The Breakwater Cafe + Bistro
It was a nice dinner and quiet enough for me to hear.
Israel is destined to be one of the worlds greatest chefs!
The good: great menu filled with foraged & locally farmed products. Several decent and creative cocktails on the menu. Most of the courses were great. The server was friendly enough. The music selection was good.
The not so good: The place was almost empty and the music was really loud. I commented about the loud music (we'd have to yell at each other to hear), but it wasn't turned down. My main, the nettle fetuccini, had a 'urinal cake'-type flavour I just couldn't get past. (I hope it was just some weird spice and not...)
If the music gets turned down I think more people into local/organic/foraged would go there. Its menu made me think the place should be packed, but overall it just didn't quite get there, in terms of awesomeness. With a few tweaks, it could.
Our server was very polite. We enjoyed the margarita flatbread, mushroom soup, lobster salad roll as veggie lasagna which was the best I’ve had in a restaurant. The location can’t be beat!
Overpriced but a good location.
Food was fantastic; between the table we tried a number of sandwiches. The salmon burger was the hands down winner. The capers were the star of the plate. Beer selection is small, but we tried 3 of the 6 and they were all delish. Only downside was that they seemed understaffed. Service was super friendly but very slow.
Loved it there!!
If you want to enjoy a dinner at a not so touristy location, with great food and cool people, that’s the spot.
Our server was very pleasant, patient and helpful. My wife has a very limited diet right now, and we managed to find several things that met her criteria. She said the chicken was the best she'd ever had!
We found the prices to be reasonable and liked that we could get a small glass of a beverage. We will recommend it and bring some friends next time!
We had been in the tasting room on a previous occasion as the bistro was being renovated. It has changed a lot from what it used to be....we found the music very loud and had to move twice because of it. Much prefer the tasting room for a more intimate atmosphere...the bistro is very open and even though there were very few customers it seemed excessively loud. But the food was great...best fish & chips we have had in a long time, and gluten-free at that!
Came here for my birthday and the experience was so so. Menu items looked promising but were forgetful in the end. Two people ordered the pasta and it came severely undercooked and clumped together... sent it back and it still came back doughy but the server was attentive and responded as best she could to that issue
For a bistro and bar, the menu only had 1 red, 1 white and 1 rose on the menu as well as a limited selection of bottles... furthermore only 4 cocktails and a couple beers. Found the menu for the tasting room downstairs which had a significantly larger selection of drinks but was told they like to keep the experiences separate. If I had a choice between a tasting room or a bar for a drink, I’d choose the bar.. was disappointed this wasn’t the case.
Great location though and I hope they’re able to iron out these glitches
The menu items were interesting and very tasty. Presentation was good and the service was excellent
Very nice service and great view of the breakwater.
The service was terrible. It took forever for us to get our drinks and our food. I loved the location and the food was pretty good but our waiter was not no his game.
I used to go to the Breakwater a lot because I enjoyed the menu and ambience. I live around the corner so it's wonderful to be able to walk there, and to support a local business.
The new reno is beautiful! And I love the fact that the upstairs bistro now has french fries!
The one downside is that the menu is not as good as the old menu. A lot less variety, and some the options I saw come out appeared very bland and uninteresting. The dish I ordered was underwhelming.
However, I'll certainly keep going as I love the restaurant and want to see it continue to thrive and be supported by James bay residents.
This space has no sound dampening and on a moderately busy evening the noise level means that conversation can only happen through shouting, which makes the problem even worse.
If you’re eating low carb or keto you will be hard pressed to find enough to eat here. When I looked at the menu on OpenTable it looked like I could piece a meal together. I then got here and discovered that the menu was completely different. The food was good but not exceptional. I won’t be back.
We booked for the upstairs area - but due to a private party taking the upstairs we were directed downstairs - and it was great - loved the evening,
Really disappointed with the Tasting House restaurant. Couldn't believe the size of fish that I was given. I did complain and was offered something else but I declined. Definitely wouldn't go again and wouldn't recommend it.
This is a place that seems to attract few tourists. It's in a very interesting location and has a great view! We had made a reservation which turned out to be unnecessary since it wasn't crowded. However, we discovered that they had reserved a table for us with a fantastic view, so we really appreciated that.
We will definitely go back!
After moving into our new Victoria home my wife and I dropped in for a quick dinner. The service was friendly, the food delicious and the view exciting. Three monster cruise ships outside our window created a frenzy of buses, taxis, float planes, helicopters and pedestrians. Quite entertaining.
The service was quick and sometimes almost too rushed but she was friendly. The views were fantastic. However, the food was terrible. Most our table did not eat even half of our dishes and no questions asked. After our dinner near closing time, the bartender came over and rudely told to pretty much leave as it was closing. If you want an ocean view and a nice server and are just stopping in for a quick drink, then yes good place. Other than that I would say skip it. I am not a picky person but that was not a good experience. A Lot of tourists come in from the cruise ships and if this is how they are welcomed, I don't suspect they would return. I get why this is so low rated now.
Great place to eat and look out over the water. Very friendly and helpful staff
With a medium-sized group, we were able to secure a reservation and get seated quickly. The view was lovely, and the service was excellent. Staff were helpful, efficient, food arrived quickly, and everyone enjoyed the evening.
