The Civic at the Broadview Hotel
We are frequent customers at the Broadview. But for Sunday brunch, the music was too loud and everyone's voices rose to meet it. The server had to yell to be heard right next to us. When the music stopped for a few minutes, it was comfortable - but it didn't last. Please turn it down!
Also, please get in some lactose-free milk for the cappuccino and latte. the dairy-free options are no substitute - this is not a costly nor difficult option to have on hand.
The room is lovely. A mixture of seating, fabrics and surfaces. The room was busy and so quite noisy. Attentive service was appreciated. My friend had the Broadview breakfast with scrambled eggs toast and well cooked bacon as requested. I ordered the chicken salad; chicken, kale, dates, and chickpeas. They remembered to leave out the almond. A bowlful of especially tough Kate topped by 8 small cubes of chicken, about 10 chickpeas was not a chicken salad. For whatever reason I didn’t ask for something else and should have.
Atmosphere and service was great, but food was mediocre at best. Much better brunch places nearby.
I am done with Civic for sure! Customer service got a zero from me.
But the rooftop was soooo good because of the best customer service.
Paris was so good! But definitely not recommended the Civic, the food served cold as well.
That was disappointing.
The executive chef, Richard Singh, is one absolutely amazing fellow. We've (my partner and I) have been eating his dishes for four years and were happy to follow him to the Civic. They certainly chose the right man to command the kitchen and create an awesome experience. Fantastic!
As a hospitality professional I found the staffs care about our experience to be great and the food was delicious and exceeded expectations
Thank you for your feedback, see you again!
Family dinner, enjoyed by all! The food was amazing and the staff were friendly and down to earth.
Thank you so much, this is amazing feedback. We look forward to welcoming you back to The Civic.
Food was totally overpriced, and the taste was mediocre. There was a flickering light in the ceiling above our table which was very distracting.
Thank you for this feedback. We take pride in our food and service at The Civic. I wish we had known night of so that we could have tried to remedy any complaints. As always, your feedback is important to us and we are always open to it.
After the first round of drinks we were ignored as were the other tables around us. Unbeknownst to us, there was a wedding happening on the top floor which we didn’t find out about until after. Only aware that there was some private event, I asked the manager if there was something going on in the kitchen and if it had anything to do with the event. He dismissed my concerns and assured me that they paid attention to all their guests.
When our meals arrived after nearly an hour, only two of our guests were served. Their pasta was was hot but average to the taste. The ribeye showed up with only two small mildly warm slices, a slice of bread pudding and some burned rapini. The duck was cold and the lamb was on the verge of turning. The duck was sent back and the lamb was removed to be replaced by some scallops which were lightly seared leaving them cold and nervously unwanted. The duck returned warm after being in the microwave.
After the meals, the waitress put down some plates for something special from the kitchen for my birthday. It was almost another twenty minutes before this special desert arrived. Two separate plates of assorted gluten free deserts. I’m guessing we were supposed to serve ourselves with our individual forks? I was done.
It was clear that something was going on, that they were behind and that many of the tables around us were not being tended to. I regret not going somewhere else but it was my birthday and hoped that things would get back on track. They never did. When I called the waitress over, I was informed that the manager wasn’t on the floor. The Civic had let her down as much as they had let us down and I was greatly embarrassed in front of my guests.
Fifteen minutes later the manager showed up and I informed him that they had ruined my birthday and that we were not paying of anything. He didn't apologize and we left. The Civic has permanently lost my patronage and I will not be recommending this establishment to anyone.
We apologize for your negative experience, we did try and satisfy your concerns that evening. The event facility upstairs has a completely separate kitchen and staff. The menu was new and the food arrived in house just before your reservation, I assure you it is fresh. When proteins are ordered medium rare they arrive with a cool/warm red centre, the meat needs time to rest. As always, we take pride in our food and service, we strive to have our guests experience only the best at The Civic.
Food was excellent but portions fairly small. I’m not used to big meals, but we had to order extra vegetables to get enough to eat. The appetizer scallops were perfectly cooked and the best I’ve had in along time. It’s a date night or taking out your parents sort of place.
Thank you for the feedback, I wish that we could have satisfied your hunger fully without having to order a side. Please come back and join us again!
All great Server allowed us to take our time and we were there thoroughly enjoying ourselves for over 2 hrs.. then on to the roof top. Excellent experience all around and my guest does not eat seafood but loved the Halibut... well done
Thank yo for this excellent feedback, please join us again anytime!
Had brunch here for my birthday! The food was excellent, definitely recommend the bottomless mimosas! We had a blast. The place is also so cute. Our service was amazing and contributed to a great birthday. Thank you to the staff for their outstanding service and for the laughs we shared together.
Thank you for this excellent feedback, please join us again!
They need more servers on the floor for Sunday brunch. Service was slow.
Thank you for the feedback. We will never improve without comments like yours, much appreciated.
My friends and I came here for a bachelorette party dinner, and were very pleased with the experience. Even though we arrived 20 minutes early, we were immediately seated. Our waitress answered all of our questions with care, and recommended a fantastic bottle of Riesling. The ribeye steak and porkchop entrees were the group favourites. After a delicious meal, our wait staff surprised the bride-to-be with a congratulatory dessert, and split our bills without hesitation. Thank you to the staff of The Civic for your wonderful, attentive service.
I will pass on your feedback, thank you so much! Please come and join us again.
Totally awesome service! Server had helpful advice and a very warm personality. A bit noisy because of a party room event. Food was terrific, especially the soup! Cocktails over-priced. Décor was attractive and well-appointed. Enjoyed the rooftop lounge. Hot spot of the area!
Good meal, service and great ambience. Combining a meal in the Civic with a drink in the Rooftop bar with excellent views over the city makes for a lovely evening.
Girls night out!
Amazing food and wine. Service was excellent.
Had a delicious brunch. The staff were extremely nice to deal with. We would come back for sure.
Thank you for the lovely review! We look forward to welcoming you back in the future. Kind regards, Sarah Ritchie Food and Beverage Manager
The Civic is a fantastic restaurant. Their brunch is hard to beat and the service, in my experience, has always been top-notch. The interior of this entire complex (The Broadview hotel) has been beautifully repurposed and designed. From a strip club to a wonderful hotel with great restaurants, what an interesting history. That history is displayed on the stairwell walls as you walk from the top to the bottom of the building. Highly recommend for brunch, lunch, dinner!
The civic is a great addition to the neighborhood. Food is delicious but the portions are very small for the price. Also was very loud when we were there
We have had excellent meals here in the past, but things were off this time. The dishes were overly salty, and our mains took an hour to arrive, which is too long. Also, the value for money is not great. $38 for a piece of salmon which was nothing out of the ordinary in terms of taste. The service was attentive, friendly and professional, though.
For brunch it was a great venue, great service. Food was just ok. Lunch on the rooftop was the same. They need a better, bigger menu for lunch.
Menu is limited.
Really friendly service and great menu options. The avocado toast was amazing!
Absolutely lovely! Your feedback is appreciated. Thank you and see you again!
Excellent meal. Presentation was beautifully executed. The spring salad was amazing and our waitress, Emma, was very attentive. Excellent overall
Thank you for this great feedback. Looking forward to welcoming you back soon!
Great anniversary dinner!
Happy Anniversary, thank you for this great feedback. Looking forward to welcoming you back soon or for your next anniversary!
After a not very gratifying experience at the Rooftop Bar above for pre-dinner drinks, we were very pleasantly surprised by the exceptional food and service at The Civic. The scallop and - believe it or not! - hen’s egg appetizers were creative and scrumptious, while the pork and roasted halibut mains were also exceptionally well-conceived and tasty. Not busy enough on a Thurs night, though. I hope this restaurant sticks around.
Thank you for this great feedback regarding The Civic. Looking forward to welcoming you back soon!
Beautiful venue, stunning rooftop patio to enjoy after dinner and great service! Super recommend it 👏🏼
WOW! Amazing to hear this great feedback, please join us again soon!
Can’t remember our waiter’s name but he was also the bartender that night. He was attentive and personable which made for a great experience.
Thank you so much, we are happy to hear of your great experience. His name is Paris, please join us again!
We booked father’s day at The Civic as we live on the East Side and wanted something not too far from home. We had been to the rooftop and cafe prior, so figured we’d check out The Civic as well. It was great! Food was nice, cocktails were delicious and service was fantastic.
Thank you for the amazing feedback, so glad you enjoyed Father's Day! We look forward to welcoming you back, as always.
Extremely disappointing for brunch. It was busy and we waited an exceptionally long time for our food. All three plates were stone cold. The eggs Benedict are to be accompanied by some type of potato as listed on the menu which didn’t arrive. Our waiter said she’d been asked about that before but the chef dismissed her concerns.
Sorry to hear your experience was a negative one. Our management team is always willing to handle guest concerns on site. Please give us the opportunity and join us again.
Great place for Father’s Day Brunch. We will come again for other occasions
For a restaurant that devotes a whole page in the menu to the chef, the experience didn't live up to the hype or the expensive prices. Even $6 for bread and butter. The wine took about 10 mins to finally come. Our meals took 45 mins to arrive - we finished the bottles of wine while we waited and had to order more, the chicken dishes were cold, dry and uninteresting. One had a lot of sauce and no asparagus, the other almost no sauce, but lots of asparagus. They really looked like they spent a lot of time under the heater lamp. The other meals were good. But more like wedding meal good - not $40/plate good. We were celebrating and wanted to have a special night out as a group. We did in spite of it. It was really a disappointing meal overall and no one was impressed. I'll pay the price for an great meal - but honestly a mid-level restaurant will get you a much tastier meal - and bread! Even the cake they sent as a bit of a make up was cold, out of the fridge, dry, crumbling and more like a Sarah Lee. Honestly guys, you need to take this up several notches if you're going to charge premium prices for everything.
Thank you for this feedback. Apologies for your experience, if you found the chicken was dry we would have happily prepared another for you. Our bread is from Thuet Bakery, served with cultured butter hence the cost. The cake is gluten free hence the texture. Apologies the wine took too long to arrive, there were multiple varied bottles at this table. Any concerns with the food, wine or service we will always happily deal with promptly on site. Once again, your feedback is appreciated.
Absolutely phenomenal. The restaurant, The Civic, has a delicious offering of items including rib eye steak, halibut, fois grade and scallops. Every dish was delicious. Service was friendly and attentive.
We appreciate this great feedback, please come and join us again!
Great place to host a birthday dinner, the food was great as always! Highly recommended
Food was delicious; service was good. I was a little nervous as had read many negative reviews but my time was fine. Would go back.
Thank you for your positive feedback! Looking forward to welcoming you back next time.
Lunch BLT with peameal was very good; not too salty, and the sourdough was excellent. Service hit and miss, with drink orders (water, tea and OJ) not arriving until after all the food had arrived. Water refilled with either flat or sparking; we never knew what we were going to get.
Thank you for your feedback. We are taking steps to ensure service is excellent any time of day and any service.
Went there for Sunday Brunch... LOVED the bottomless Mimosa. Food was good, but nothing unique. Service and atmosphere were great!
Thank you for your feedback, looking forward to welcoming you back! Our menus continue to evolve.
It was an ok brunch. They were a little behind in the kitchen so there was a 15min wait time to put in a food order. We were warned when we walked in about the delay, however anytime one has to wait to put in an order, downgrades the experience.
We are taking steps to speed up our service during peak periods, your feedback is appreciated.
