The David Duncan House
I go there often for business lunches and dinners. The food is always good. You can actually have conversations and the staff are attentive but not over the top in your face.
All aspects of the meal were excellent. We had a vegan with us and they were well served with the salad choices and vegetable sides.
The steak was too thin and not representative of how a rib steak should be done.
too expensive, food was mediocre, way too busy we seemed hurried,
Lovely filet mignon and dover sole. Drinks were great -thanks Jimmy. Tiramisu was lovely as was the banana flambe and the sherbert bowl. Service with Peter was great. Can't go wrong at one of my favorite restaurants!
Fabulous venue! Excellent service. Good food, but too overpriced for quality.
Wonderful food and service. The portions are huge - the dishes we had to serve two all could have served three maybe four.
I’m very saddened to have to write this review. DDH has been one of our favorite places to have steak and lamb chops. It’s always been good!! No it has always been AMAZING!!! this time however we felt like they’ve dropped the ball!!! My lamb chops weren’t like usual and arrived COLD at the table. So did my husband’s Ribeye. Of course they took it back and microwaved it....
The highlight of our lunch was the escargot!!! Fantastic!!! Very different than every where else!! I think we’ll go there one more time as I haven’t lost hope in one of my favorite restaurants just yet.
food isn't good comparing with price
Steak over cooked and thin. For 45 bucks expected something better than price choppers bargain cut of meat. Rest of food and drink was great. Service great.
I consider the David Duncan House one of Toronto's finest restaurants. I would not hesitate to recommend it for a date or a business dinner. I love the atmosphere of an older venue. The Staff is cordial and professional and the food is great.
My husband made reservations for dinner to celebrate our 57th anniversary and we were
thoroughly happy and impressed with the level of service as well as the presentation of the food
and overall excellent service. We thoroughly enjoyed the escargot starter and the seafood
platter for two. The dessert also was delicious and it was a real surprise when it was given to us
to celebrate our anniversary.
Overall, the evening was very enjoyable and delicious. And the price was just right as well.
I would recommend the David Duncan House to my friends.

As always, excellent service and food quality. The lamb chops were tasty and the appetizer scallops were done to perfection. The lobster pasta had some small pieces of shell in the pasta, which could be swallowed accidentally. Everything else was great! Will definitely go back next time for special occasions!

The ambiance and service was amazing and the food was cooked just right. However, this restaurant is very expensive and the only downside would be the value. You are definitely paying for the ambiance more than anything. Overall, a restaurant I would recommend for special occasions but you can definitely find similar quality food for a lot less money in Toronto for a regular date night.

Venue was gorgeous but nothing else met expectations.
Service - not considered fine-dining at all. The plates and cutlery were barely set straight and were randomly set on the table (ex. the fork wasn't even placed near me, fork and knife on the wrong side).. because of the way the table was set, the server couldn't quite reach to get anything set right for my seat. Server never bothered to ask us if our food was okay... which it was not. Nobody cleared the table after the main and before serving dessert.
Food - Waited 50mins for our mains and sides to arrive. Asparagus = too stringy, didn't bother peeling them at all; Brussel sprouts = burnt and the sauce was just randomly thrown on top of it so presentation made it not appetizing at all. We barely touched this plate. Steak = overly salty. Pasta = only thing that they didn't quite screw up.
It's unfortunate, as the venue is really lovely, but can't ever justify coming back here.
Been to the Duncan house many times never had a problem. I took my daughter for Thanksgiving dinner during the long weekend and we were very disappointed. Granted it was the end of the night of a busy Thanksgiving weekend but the meal we were served was warmed up dry left overs. I would of retuned it but I did not want to disappoint my daughter. I hardly ate anything. We had to ask for water and her napkin fell on the ground, right by our feet, we did not notice until we got up, it was on my shoe in plain sight and not one server or waiter addressed it or bothered to get a new one. Overall the staff were pleasant and the ambience is great but for the price point of my bill, and poor quality of the meal, it was not worth it and I would of gone elsewhere.
Went there for Thanksgiving Dinner. The staff was great and very attentive. Really enjoyed the garlic bread, a nice surprise! The one thing I would recommend they do in the future is to have a Thanksgiving dessert menu. The turkey dinner was excellent but I sure was disappointed to find out there was no Pumpkin Pie on the menu, that's a must for next year!
I came to Duncan House for the Thanksgiving spécial. The waiters and other staff were extremely friendly and accommodating. However, the turkey was a turkey roll not from a fresh turkey. The vegetables had too much garlic, even the potatoes. Turkey dinners do not have garlic. Plus, to top it off, there was no pumpkin pie as advertised on the website. I will not be coming back next Thanksgiving.
David Duncan House is a very nice, elegant restaurant. Service is top notch. I would highly recommend it for any special occasion. The prices are rather high, but worth it if you want a very nice atmosphere and good food.
As always, the table side Caesar Salad was amazing!! One of the few reasons why we dine at The Duncan house.

Ambience was fantastic....Staff and service was outstanding...Food was excellent...The David Duncan House has been my favorite in the city for many many years!....My son and daughter in law had their wedding reception there.
This restaurant was a big let down. Poor service but this was tolerable in comparison to the disgusting food. Everything was over cooked and inedible. I would not eat here again.
the decor and ambiance are elegant. the prices are in line with similar establishments.
we found the service somewhat ambivalent. we were served the entree before we finished the salad; and after the entree, the service seemed to dissipate. i poured my wine on several occasions; and, we had to ask for the dessert menu.
the food was delicious; and, our party enjoyed ourselves.
I use to come here when it was owned by the original owners. I also knew one of the chefs in the kitchen he was an asian guy. But ever since the restaurant got switched to new owners I really feel the food went down hill. Today the restaurant is owner by the chain Peter&Paul's.
There are many things I must say to explain why I only have a low star rating.
Before it switched owners the restaurant use to be white-glove service and very attentive. Today we couldnt even find out waiter on a Monday night dinner. It wasnt even that packed except for the top floor where I think someone was hosting a dinner party. I dont blame our waiter because he was serving our table which was on the lower floor and we were literally THE ONLY table around. The restaurant was dead. But he had to also go upstairs to waiter the party.
The Bread -- the original owners use to serve the garlic butter bread perfectly with a tray of sliced pickles, olives and cottage cheese. Today that's all gone. They just serve focaccia bread and that's it. The tomahawk was not available which we usually order and the steak for Two on the menu was the only other choice. I was not impressed. We also ordered the asparagus which tasted a bit sour tonight and the mashed potatoes we less then mediocre. They use to be served soft and fluffy. The New York steak came well done when ordered medium-rare, the seafood platter that we ordered to share tasted a bit fishy and not as fresh and just everything put together was just not how it use to be.
Overall I wish they kept the same service and food choices. Perhaps their chefs all left after the new owner took over. I'm not one to complain ... I came here 2x since the new management took over and i dont think there will be a third for me.
The restroom sign was funny though.

Another exceptional dinner at DDH...quality,quality,quality!
Overall the experience was a nice one but had a couple of issues. Upon sitting down, we were asked if we would like some water (sparkling or still). We chose still and thought nothing of it when waitstaff arrived with a bottle for us. Until I arrived home and looked over the receipt (I know I should check the bill before paying but I didn’t) and noticed a charge of $9 for the bottle. Strange to charge for something that was offered to us. We weren’t charged for the bread that was also offered to the table so unsure of why we had to pay for water???
Water is usually a nice gesture offered by a restaurant to their customers.
Another thing I felt was a little weird was that the sides were an additional charge as well. When ordering a $40-$50 piece of steak (which was cooked perfectly and very delicious), I am usually not expecting to have to pay an additional $10-$20 for some potatoes and asparagus/brussel sprouts.
I figure that when paying a fairly high price for the protein, it would be nice to get some sides included with it.
While a little disappointed with the food, we were very happy with the service as all the waiters were great.
Went there to celebrate my birthday. Service was very good but found the food not to be very good, of small portions and somewhat overpriced. A bottle of mineral water was $9.00! Dinner for 2 without any alcohol was $150.00!
Incredible dining experience in an old-style steakhouse. The two women had fish which was seasoned and cooked to perfection, while both men had roast beef which practically melted in our mouths. Alex, our waiter, was very attentive and knowledgeable and made excellent suggestions re the wines and food. The ambiance was perfect - low lighting and quiet. Our only quibble was the prices when one baked potato was $10.

Parking is free too, so you don't have to worry not being able to find a spot.

Experienced David Duncan House for the first time but certainly won't be the last. Although it was a Friday night, the place was not very busy; it did pick up a little later but still not crazy busy. The service was fantastic, the food was really, really good but not outstanding; we ordered scallops and a salad for apps (the scallops were delicious, the salad was ok) and the chateaubriand for 2. The main course was lovely, especially the presentation, although the vegetables were a tad overcooked. We enjoyed a great bottle of wine - can't recall the name but it was their house cab sav and a specialty coffee afterwards. As more patrons arrived, they all seemed to be seated in the same area we were although I did see other staff milling about elsewhere. Perhaps there was a big party arriving shortly. Seemed to be a more mature crowd except for the 2 young men who rushed in, dressed in grubby jeans and a t-shirt, seated at a corner table, ordered a beer and then left to sit elsewhere. I'm not judging their appearance or presence, it's just that they were not discreet about it and their behaviour was very odd. Overall, it was great and we look forward to going back.
