The Derby Arms
Been to the derby arms several times and had a lovely time, however waited over 30 minutes for our plates to be collected despite waitresses clearly walking past and trying to get their attention. Had to go to the bar to get the bill eventually after 45 minutes as no one came over! Food was also cold and gravy came out watery.. not the best service at all for somewhere that has so much potential. Won’t be going back. I
There was a long wait before we were attended to and seated. The actual table service was fine as was the food. It was fairly noisy but was busy. It is a little pricey here considering it’s only a pub!
Fabulous service really friendly staff! Thank you for a lovely evening
Full of people having Sunday lunch or Christmas meet ups.
Friendly, accommodating staff.
Although the restaurant was very busy we were served drinks in a reasonable amount of time. The food was very good & everyone enjoyed their meal
Nice lunch. Varied menu. Good place for a catch up with plenty of parking. Friendly staff and attentive staff.
Staff friendly, food adequate, der VERY SLOW
A nice venue for a midweek meal. Plenty of choice (even if your first choice has run out!). Nice ambiance and very helpful, pleasant staff.
The menu looked nice for a Sunday lunch, but the execution was not as good as the expected meal.
I started with the calamari that were small thin pieces with a crisp batter, but needed thicker pieces of calamari. I then had the lamb, and although tasty was very tough, and my wife’s chicken was a little dry. We had an ok meal, but don’t think we’ll rush back.
Arrived to find they were only doing a special menu and 7 out of the 12 dishes weren’t available. Waitress was very good and apologetic but still no trio roast !! :(
Food is not as good as it used to be and prices are quite high
Polite and efficient staff but although our starters were the same one if the two arrived some time after the first. Fortunately our starters were cold
I found the goats cheese with truffle and beetroot salad not to my liking
The truffle ‘flavour ‘ was overwhelming and could not taste the cheese at all thebeetroot salad was bland.
My partner didn’t seem to mind it
Unfortunately I could not have the sea bass as there were none left
I chose the chicken with garlic and chips
I have had this many times in the past at the derby arms and sister restaurants
The chicken used to be really moist and the garlic was roasted and served in net as was half a lemon. Unfortunately now just a piece of chicken leg and a piece of breast, garlic and chips and a small jug of gravy. Disappointing!
Poor service. Starter was over cooked and small quantity for cost. It was a platter with lots of cucumber skin and that filled the plate. It inedible! We did get the starter half price after complaining. Main dish ok but nothing special.
Not many staff for Easter holidays.
Wouldn’t go back which is a shame because it could be lovely if run efficiently!
Very disappointing. Very noisy, slow service, average food, massively overpriced. I don’t normally leave bad reviews but this was a very average restaurant and we certainly won’t be returning to this or any other of the restaurants in the chain. Visited The Swan in Broadway the week before and it was equally poor. Didn’t realise it was the same company until I picked up the menu and it was identical. Avoid!
We enjoy the atmosphere, friendly service and quite extensive menu
Food and atmosphere was superb, the staff where very polite and helpful but a little slow when we wanted to order.
However, we thoroughly enjoyed the evening, the restaurant had a great atmosphere making it very enjoyable.
Nice atmosphere, good for an upscaled pub dinner. I would say the prices are overpriced what you get. I ordered the chicken starters and all we got was 3 pieces of chicken for £7 (see photo), which to me is not good value. The Wagyu burger was £18 and it was an just average pub burger so nothing too special, they also give you no option but to have the meat well done - which is a bit of a let down.
The service was slow but they must’ve been short staffed? The staff themselves however were very nice and helpful.
To summarise, I would say this place is good for a quick pub lunch but not a place for a good quality evening meal.
We had a table booked for a dinner. It was very nice evening. The food was delicious! The waitress was nice and helpful.
Myself and friends have visited many times
Last week was not as good as usual. Waitress Caroline is always good but all the waitors that served us looked very scruffy and one had lank hair over his eyes a d appeared to grunt rather than engage!
We waited a long time for our food and when it did arrive it was not as hot as it should have been.
The toilets were not very clean.
Sunday night meal booked table for 7.00
Service was very good and the food first class will definitely be back soon
Good service and given recommendations for food selection. Lovely wine and reasonable price. Attention to detail and staff ensuring you are happy with your visit.
All round winner...great food, atmosphere, staff, and if the weather is ok outside is perfect!!
Mid week evening meal with friends. Great decor homely but modern feel. Food excellent moderately priced Good friendly service. Would definitely go again
They rang an cancelled my “confirmed” booking. Not sure if the fault lies with open table or the Derby Arms. But it’s unacceptable.
Took my Mum out for lunch, food and service excellent , prices are fair . A good varied menu as well. Booked via open table and no problem
The first time I went to the Derby Arms in 2016 the food was very good for a pub... I've been back several times (the last time in July 2017 when my parents were over) am quite sad to say the food has been on a downward spiral since, perhaps that's now resolved but I'd need to be convised things had changed to go back for food.
Always have a good meal here. Food and service excellent. Steaks really tasty. Beer good but limited choice which is really the only disappointment, we’ll apart from the English mustard, and it would be great if they changed to a Colmans type.
Not been to the Derby Arms for a while, and was impressed. It seemed clearer and less cluttered for a start. The food was good and the staff were great.
However, Open Table this is the second time I have put in a wheelchair access request and although you confirmed it, they had not been told. It wasn't a problem this time. Last time we were put upstairs because you had not passed the message on. On both occasions you confirmed to me that the request had been received etc. I would advise disabled people to book direct .
Two of us lunched here having not visited the Derby Arms for a while. We were pleasantly surprised. It’s a bright and airy restaurant close to Epsom racecourse and Downs. The food was very good although we felt that the portion of strawberries could have been more generous. Overall, we enjoyed our lunch very much, staff were presentable, friendly and efficient. No undue delays in service. Definitely will be returning soon.
Our waitress Mel was very friendly and patient with us as we took ages to choose from this enormous menu! We had only planned to pop in for a drink but the menu looked so good we stayed for dinner...and dessert!
Unfortunately the food does not match the pleasant atmosphere of the pub. The wagyu burger (if it was indeed wagyu...) was pretty poor. It’s very easy it make a burger look and taste good but little effort has been spent on this burger. Bun to big for the very small patty and not toasted. Whole slice of red onion sitting in the middle. Mayo and relish served on the side(?!?!) so I had to deconstruct and then reconstruct the burger.... just lazy attempt all round. Probably best to stick to the roasts, not the best in the world but reasonably good.
Great food, location and service.
Amazing food and great service - can’t wait to go back
Lunch with my wife, son and his girlfriend. Service and food good apart from onions with wife's fish which were under cooked. Great decor, but the connection with the Epsom Derby and horse racing has been lost - which is a pity. Retention of some of the wonderful pictures of famous winners from the past would have been appropriate. Perhaps a "Derby" corner? Dogs welcome which is lovely for a pub/restaurant overlooking the Downs.
Apart from not finding our booking we had a lovely evening. Staff very pleasant & helpful
Lovely attentive staff, very generous portions of food well cooked and presented. For me it was a bit like dining at a disco with very loud music making it almost impossible to have a conversation with the person sat right next to me! Perhaps not appropriate for a Sunday lunchtime.
Staff helpful and friendly , food excellent value - triple roast . The crumble was amazing
After a 15 mile journey to get to the pub it was CLOSED! My booking was confirmed by Open Table, surely the systems should be updated to decline bookings when a venue is shut.
I was meeting a friend and we then had to drive around the area trying to find a venue for lunch without a booking. I was very upset about this. Grateful for your comments, thank you.
We went in hope of a good quality, traditional Sunday lunch.
The food was, in the main, bland and the beef of poor quality. However, the fig and nut bake which one of our party had was very good!
The toilets - both ladies and gents - were, frankly, disgusting and need very deep cleaning and re-doing.
This is not, in my view, a 'Gastropub' and needs to up it's game quite dramatically if it wishes to build a reputation.
Attended with family and we had a range of dishes between us. Service friendly and considerate. Food to a good standard and ambience, though busy allowed for conversation. Good job highly
Beautiful food and wonderful service. Now I know it's so foggy friendly we will make it our regular.
