The Gables at Chadds Ford

Lemon and Herb Risotto, Crispy Leeks Wine, Red Pepper Orange Gastrique Pairing Suggestion ~ Château Pilet, White Bordeaux
Poor texture and no color to food, or vibrancy to flavors. Not everything needs to be served with a starch. For the cost of non-alcoholic beverages the lemonade have been at least homemade. Lastly, the noise level was too loud, it was too dark to even read the menus and tables were too close together (which is odd given we're still in a pandemic!).
Well it was Mother’s Day people say it’s the worst time to dine out. We have eaten here in the past and it has been wonderful. But I guess they really are struggling to hire efficient waiters and waitresses in the different times we are experiencing.
We dined here for the first time on Mother’s Day and similar to the other reviews from that day, had an incredibly poor experience. We waited over 20 minutes for our server to come over, which was the first and only time she filled our water. We asked one of the other staff if we could get water and rather than helping us or getting someone she simply told us she was only cleaning tables and walked away. The restaurant was clearing up from a Mother’s Day brunch event the entire time, so dishes, trays, glasses, and silverware were clattering around the whole meal which was very unpleasant and made it hard to hear conversation as well as any music that may have been playing. Waitress was inattentive and despite being her only table, she would disappear in between taking our order or bringing a course, and each course took far too long to arrive. I had the burger which like everything else was overpriced, and I requested it be cooked medium but it was served so dry and well done that it fell apart. Since we’d waited over 45 min for the food to arrive I didn’t send back, instead opting to just not come back.
This was our visit and I was so excited to go for Mother’s Day after hearing several recommendations from friends but was sadly disappointed with our experience. We had 4pm reservations and were sat in the upstairs event room. This would have been okay except staff were clearly cleaning up after the Mother’s Day Brunch that took place earlier in the day. Staff were breaking down tables, hauling away large catering containers, sweeping, etc. It felt like a construction zone. We were also sat at a table that would have easily sat 8-10 so the 5 of us were oddly spread out. Over half the tables were empty and there wasn’t any music which created an overall uncomfortable atmosphere. Since this was our fist visit, I thought this was their only dining area and was surprised it wasn’t more crowded since we had a very hard time finding a reservation. It wasn’t until we were leaving and decided to explore the first level that we found the “real” dining area and bar! This would have been SO much more appropriate considering our party size and that we were not there for the brunch and therefore there wasn’t a reason to put us up in the event room to watch them clean up. If the food was fantastic, I may have been a little more forgiving but this was not the case. So sorry we didn’t have a better experience because I will not be recommending The Gables based on this experience.
Mother’s Day brunch here was fabulous! It was our first visit here and all four of us enjoyed the food (even our guest who just overcame cancer and needs only soft foods), drinks, coffee and our EXCELLENT service by Gretchen. She made sure we had enough food from the buffet, was friendly and made our experience even sweeter! The only suggestion we had for the brunch is to have more dessert options! But we will be back!
The Gables menu is incredible and the atmosphere is always lovely. We dine here regularly on special occasions.
Unfortunately our Mother’s Day brunch was a bit of a disappointment. Our party of four was sat at a table for eight. It wasn’t communicated that the buffet was the only option for the day. It took us longer to get the check than it took us to get and finish our food, which wasn’t bad. It felt like we crashed someone’s brunch wedding reception.
Booked a couple weeks in advance for Mother’s Day and was never told about
Food was cold Mother’s Day brunch
When I made the Mother's Day reservation back in March, there was no indication that it was going to be a buffet or that there was a choice of inside/outside seating. The food was good, but sitting outside in 50 degree weather with imminent rain that we were not dressed for detracted from the experience. Based on that, it's hard to answer the question "Would you recommend The Gables at Chadds Ford to a friend?" with a yes/no answer. Would I recommend based on my experience? No. Would I try again with the knowledge that I should specify seating and check whether or not there will be a buffet? Yes.
As viewed from the buffet line, many kitchen and wait staff were either not wearing masks properly or at all.
We were asked once if we needed anything to drink.
There were diners at the buffet without masks.
The food was not bad, but definitely not worth the expense nor the wait.
We had 11 am reservations and were not seated until 11:30.
Everything was excellent except the following. They ran out of Tira Misu and the Creme Brulee I ordered as a result wasnt anything special. The draft beer menu was very weak. So many great local breweries and none were on there. The appetizer (prosciutto crostini) and two entrees (brick chicken and pork chop) were both awesome though. As was the service!
Bummed that my message about Mom’s birthday was missed and she walked up to the Reserved Happy Birthday table in error 🙁
Incredible starters, wait staff was charming
Usually the Gables is a consistent favorite, however, the two visits have been inconsistent and well, odd.
The most recent visit we received a quick welcome but then had to request a different server because after 20 minutes he never came back. The bread was very hard on the outside with a dimes worth of soft bread in the middle - should not have been served.
Ceaser and Pear Salads were both great and 1 of 2 cocktails quite tasty.
Hopefully they’ll get it mostly or all right soon.
First time. Very nice. We ate outside but was too warm as the outdoor area was too enclosed. Nice server, incredibly slow
Service was terrible. Our waitress was unavailable when we needed her. When she brought our tea out there were no spoons. She never brought out any. Food came out slow.
Underwhelmed. Three steaks all overcooked. Potatoes were lukewarm. Never got bread. Wouldn’t go back.
Received a gift card. 1st visit was so-so.
Went back a second time to use the remaining balance on the card. Should have just let the balance expire.
Hostess had no control of the people entering to be seated. Once seated, waitress was struggling to handle her work load. Water was served in paper cups due to a glassware shortage per our waitress.
I orders shrimp and grits. Zero seasoning and soupy grits. Shame on the kitchen for even serving this dish. Won’t be returning or recommending to anyone.
Food was good. Nice atmosphere
Great family dinner. Service was very good. Our reservation was a little bit later but we were never rushed. Look forward to returning when COVID restrictions are all lifted.
My husband and I ordered the Avocado Crostini which was just bland. Nothing special and very little avocado. My entree was the pork chop with garlic mashed potatoes . The pork chop was cooked well and was not dry or over cooked. The flavor was nothing special - it just seemed like it was cooked in oil and salted. My husband had the grits with shrimp. The grits were undercooked and the shrimp tasted like they were simply boiled. Service was poor. The cocktails were overpriced and not even close to the description that was on the menu. We were disappointed.
This was the first time that we had in a long been there in a long time. We found the food to be very good, service was good. The one draw back was that there was a large, noisy group sitting outside.
A glitch or 2 but overall a lovely lunch. Made a reservation for a late-ish lunch at 1:30. Had to search for someone to seat us after waiting 10 minutes. Our server, however, was excellent and anticipated everything we wanted. The lunch was very good and enjoyable on the tented back patio.
This was on a Sunday evening, they seemed understaffed, but they were not bust. There was some confusion(on their part) as to who our server would be. They took our drink and appetizer order, served ou appetizer and as we almost finished, they came back for dinner order. The food was nothing special, one dinner 3 stars, the other, two stars. dessert was good. It took two hours for dinner for two, in a not busy restuarant. we've eaten there before and it was good and they seem to be busy most times ao they must have something, we didn't see it
Restaurant was extremely busy on Saturday evening. I don't think with the pandemic slow down that the restaurant was prepared for the larger crowds. It took at least 10 minutes for someone to come over and acknowledge us and then another 10 to get our drinks. We placed an order for a charcuterie plate, which took another 20 minutes. The charcuterie plate was good, but they should have had crackers on it to go with the hard cheese. Our entrees came as we were finishing our appetizers. We would have like things spaced a little better during the evening. The Pafpardella Gables which I had with shrimp was very good, though the shrimp that I had added were kind of small. One of our party had the crab cakes and said there was too much filler. The house pasta special with salmon, crab and shrimp in a champagne cream sauce was ok. The size of the entrees were kind of small for the price. I have been there for brunch in the past, and will probably stick with brunch going forward.
Awesome meal and service
This was my first visit to this vet popular establishment. The food was very good. I had the mushroom linguini. The pasta was perfect al dente. My wife had a lovely short rib. The mushroom soup was excellent. We both enjoyed a fresh dessert. I had the chocolate ganache and my wife really enjoyed her bananas Foster cake.
The main seating area was very loud. No getting around that unless one goes at an off hour. The bus staff was very young and inexperienced but learning.
Our server Martin was quite attentive and pleasant.
My husband and I stopped in for lunch and it was just incredible! Everyone was SO nice! I never write reviews so this means a lot! We live on Kent Island, MD and we will be back!!
Food was outstanding and there was something on the menu for everyone.
Great safe dining ambiance. Great food portions value and service
Great after Longwood gathering with friends
Sat for about 15 minutes without any server stopping by for drinks, staff seemed to avoid our table very well. We just decided to ask someone if we had a server or not after getting frustrated. Tracey was absolutely wonderful and took on our table while also serving his tables outside. Appetizers were excellent, however, while waiting a large bug was crawling on the wall. Another server was helpful and gave a new napkin to replace the one with the dead bug in it. With our table being next to the kitchen it was worrying. Our meals came out in good timing, but there was a hair in my lobster ravioli. Tracey handled it very well promptly bringing out a fresh and hot new meal. However between the hair and bug the appetite was killed. The chicken my boyfriend had was excellent and the food tasted wonderful. A little disappointing, we probably would have walked out if Tracey hadn’t been our server. Most likely won’t return, hopefully it was just an off night.
We really enjoyed our dinner
They did not rush us and the food was excellent
The Gable’s has always been our go to place for a special occasion and we chose this restaurant to celebrate our anniversary AND first night out post vaccine. We have been coming here for almost as long as our anniversary (over 25 years). Which may be why we were so disappointed in our dining experience. First impression upon being seated outdoors - wow, they really let the place go. Torn and dirty vinyl weather curtains, uncomfortable metal chairs, dead plants, garden hose laying between tables....a mess. And we had to ask three times - of three different employees - to please turn on the outdoor heaters. Second impression on service; our server was polite (and very sweet - he asked if this was a special occasion and served our deserts - crepe brûlée and tiramisu- with a candle atop each) and professional but obviously overwhelmed and harried. He and other waitstaff apologized as they were short staffed because of a lot of employees calling out. Last but not the least of the decline of quality was the meal. It as mediocre at best; appetizers of fried green tomatoes were just deep fried pancakes, and clams casino were more like deviled clams with more breading than clams. Their once famous crab cakes were nothing more than frozen Phillips’; vegetable du jour had to be yesterday’s leftovers.
The desert was fine. But for $200 I expected a better dining experience over all. Sadly we probably won’t be back again.
We had a wonderful early dinner at The Gables after visiting Longwood Gardens. We ate outdoors in the tent which is spacious and pleasant. The service was attentive and warm. The food was delicious and plentiful. Excellent dining experience.
Jake the server, though new, was like a seasoned pro. Very amusing, well informed and attentive for a new waiter. My salad with apples , pears and shrimp was excellent and Elizabeth loved her baked chicken.
Somebody (the owner or manager) took home the wine cellar keys so we could not order a bottle, but otherwise it was a delightful evening.
Lunch outside on the covered patio was delightful. Menu featured such delicacies as fried green tomatoes and lobster ravioli, both were very tasty. Burger was gigantic and crab cake sandwich delicious. Reasonable prices. Service was prompt and attentive. No rush to turn the table. We will return.
We have been dining at The Gables for years. On this day, 4/19 has not been one of the better days that we have always experienced at The Gables. Our salad took longer to get to our table after the server said it will be right out. Then once we were finished with our salad, our meal- filet migon- asked to cook it to medium, and Sea Bass, came right out faster than the salad took coming out. Which set alarm bells off for me. How long was the entree sitting while we were eating our salad? The meal was not hot. Vegtables were over cooked- not what expected from our past experience. Filet migon was not cooked medium as requested. The Sea Bass was so small of a serving, it felt like an appetizer more than an entree. Felt like this sort of quality presentation was poor from past experience with the food at The Gables. I do hope that this imporoves as this is our go to quiet spot for romantic meals.
Went on a Monday at 6:30 - not very crowded but service was very very slow
My cocktail chardonnay was served with ants crawling on the glass and in the wine it self ...
took 5 minutes to get someone's attention had to get up and walk it back to the bar saw our server and got it replaced .... didn't offer any sincere apologies for this gross thing and did not even comp me a glass of wine :(
had salad and added chicken which was dry ....
Would not go back which is a shame because it is very pretty inside
Food was good, crab Artichoke dip appetizer was good, however, one entree came too table without the protein. Didn't seem to be enough serving staff for the lunch crowd.
