We arrived exactly at 9.00 am the time our table was booked (as we had been requested to do some weeks ago) and were informed that there were no tables left in the restaurant. We were offered a table in the lounge/bar area or a little side room that had been opened for the overflow. We chose the side room. It was pleasant enough but tea and coffee was not served there as it was in the restaurant. Guests had to make it themselves using the thermos flasks of coffee or hot water. This was disappointing but would not have been a problem if ordinary tea and milk had been provided to go with the hot water. A waitress did try to rectify this as soon as she was told but had difficulty locating the tea so by the time she got back we were halfway through our cooked breakfast. We do not understand how the restaurant can run out of tables if a time slot has to be booked in advance. Surely the policy of pre-booking must apply to ALL guests. In addition to that the guests were not asked to wear masks while serving themselves at the buffet. While it is no longer mandatory to wear a mask it is common sense.
Buffet menu very limited, soup or salad to start, beef or fish or vegetarian pasta with only one choice of potatoes and vegetables only available on request. No gluten free desserts on offer.
Good choice of fruit, cereals and cooked food but had to ask about gluten free - sausages were not gluten free and no gluten free bread on offer.
When booking the hotel it looked as though it would be table service but this was changed to “temporary buffet service” which had a very limited menu. Only choice was salad or soup for starter, chicken, fish or vegetarian pasta for mains. Only one type of potatoes on offer and vegetables were available but only on request, so had to order these. No gluten free desserts. Experience was slightly better than a staff canteen.
Buffet style breakfast with a good selection of fruits cereals and cooked items.
Buffet menu again very limited with salad or soup as a starter, beef, fish or vegetarian pasta as mains with choice of only one type of potato and vegetables only on request. No gluten free desserts.
Good selection of fruits, cereals and cooked breakfast items. No gluten free sausages or bread. Buffet style breakfast. I would have been happier if more guests had been wearing masks while serving themselves but I guess that is up to the individual now rather than the hotel.
Sadly the last minute change to the very limited buffet menu was disappointing. There was a choice of salad or soup for starter, chicken, fish or vegetarian pasta and potatoes for main. Vegetables had to be ordered. The selection of chef’s desserts only offered cheese (no biscuits) for gluten free customers but they did provide a fruit salad that was not on the menu. The staff were very helpful and pleasant but seemed to be working under difficult circumstances.
Very nice breakfast. Table service, however the pastries could have been bigger.
Booked blind and very pleasantly surprized. Everywhere spotlessly clean, furnishings and decor to a high standard, food excellent from bar or restaurant and service very friendly. By comparison to others 5 stars not enough. Brilliant... thank you Chilworth Manor.
We had lunch on the terrace with a stunning view of the gardens. The food was excellent and the staff were friendly and helpful. The service was a bit slow because there was only one bar man on duty.
It was a complete disaster from start to finish, a reservation that wasn't a reservation because they'd overbooked the restaurant due to allocation of one and half hours per sitting. So all dressed up for a romantic evening with my partner whose birthday we're celebrating this weekend being told we can sit in the lounge area. Three more couples in front of us were told exactly the same thing and one couple were celebrating their wedding anniversary! I didn't stand for it and they cleared two tables and so we invited the couple whoes anniversary it was to sit with us and I asked for the other couple to be setted on the other table. Cut to the starters arriving one was completely wrong and two other mine and the lady we invited other had crab balls we're presented totally differently and looked completely different overall. I cut mine in half and it was all potatoe and no crab! My partners was meant to be smoked trouth with a celeriac side and gluten free bread. It was smoked salmon with no celeriac and wilted pinch of watercress, as was mine also. One young man (a trainee) brought the food, didn't know what was being served on the plates!!! His hand was touching his mask every second and then touching our plates! Our table was booked at 7.30, cut to 9pm and our mains hadn't arrived! The staff especially Jodie were very appologetic and othered free drinks that took half an hour so we sat foodless and drinkless for over an hour, other tables were clearly going through similar issues and when the food finally arrived, it wasn't cooked properly, or overcooked and the chefs do not know the difference between a sirlion steak and a rump steak which is what was on my plate and half of it was not edible due to fat and gristle. We were told its the 'NEW' system and because of 'covid' its not been easy. Covid is over and covid doesn't stop good management and having chefs that can actually cook and present food properly. I have never experienced anything so bad and expensive!
Covid made seat planning difficult and you had to book a time but we were made to feel welcome. The staff were enthusiastic and chatty and the food was good. Being nit picky, the menus could have been cut to shape properly (looks unprofessional) and we could have been offered sharper knives for our meat but on the whole it was good.
Lovely meal, fantastic service.
Had a lovely time, thank you
The staff were incredibly friendly and polite, we were seated and served quickly. The food was delicious, the only real issue was out of their control and that was the wind. We almost blew away in the bad weather.
Very polite and friendly staff.
3 of us chose fish n chips and unfortunately the fish had little flavour. The waiter was covering socially distanced tables so it was hard to catch him to ask for more vinegar and tartar sauce. The waiter didn't come back to ask if everything was okay with our meal or to ask if we wanted any drinks with our main meal but in all fairness he was serving four tables spread out across the terrace.
Fabulous terrace, it is in full sun until the sun sets and they have patio heaters, so we felt warm sitting outside. Staff were attentive and food was very tasty.
We went for a meal on Saturday afternoon. On a sunny day, the setting is delightful. We were sat outside in the garden and it's a very nice setting for a Saturday afternoon.
While the menu is not really as advertised on Opentable (only the limited bar menu at the moment), the food we ordered wasn't bad. Classic 'pub grub'. The chicken Ceaser salad was pretty nice and both meals were a decent size.
My main issue with the place was the service. It wasn't great. There were no more than 4 tables being used at any one time and two waitresses, but we still had to constantly wait long periods of time to get any service as the ladies on duty were more interested in hanging out chatting at the reception than serving the guests, only popping out to the seating area when it was absolutely unavoidable.
Got there & only Bar food available so didn’t stop .will go back when restaurant is open ,
Very very impressed! Was almost put off by the not so great reviews however from the moment we arrived we knew it was a very classy, lovely area! The staff were so friendly! And the food was delicious! Maybe slightly over priced but for the scenic location it’s wonderful! Would definitely return
Food wasn’t nice , staff were not very friendly, was lost most of the time
No bread so couldn’t provide toast. Tea so weak it was like plain water. Food ok but nothing noteworthy.
Sunday lunch was spot on, lovely place and service was brilliant. Ambience was a little bland, but that probably was because it was empty.
Stayed at chilworth as part of a peppa pig world package. Food was adequate, just your usual breakfast. Service was ok, a smile goes a long way. Apart from that, it was good.
Just had breakfast and due to coving it was served to the table, the service was prompt and the food hot
Very good meal and the staff were attentive. Recommended
easy to book, friendly welocme and good food.
Would enjoy another meal.
Very child friendly, staff were very helpful and quick.
Good amount of food, really good service, nothing was too much effort for the staff.
We ordered the pork and apple burger, which was ok but to worth the £16 we paid each. As there was seafood on the main and starter menu, the chips that came with the burger stank of seafood, which we passed on to the kitchen. Apart from the smell, the chips were nice, the burger was nice but like I said a bit over priced. The squid starter was nice.
Not a great choice, understadable because of covid and limited menu, however, not great for vegan/gluten free. I made do woth veggie food evening and breakfast because of the limited choice (am veggie but can't eat much dairy and I did suffer the next day!). The toast says it comes with butter, but myself and another man had to ask for it. Friendly service and socially distanced.
Service was very good. Not much on menu, but that can only be expected at this time, as they're operating on a limited menu. Everyone was spaced out and food arrived promptly.
Great service, good selection of meals available and lovely food
Had a great night at Chilworth Manor. Food and service was great and they managed to retain the atmosphere despite Covid restrictions
Beautiful food we were extremely impressed. Only downfall was the children’s menu. Would like to give my daughter something healthier than sausage and chips or chicken nuggets and chips. Eg lasagna, carbonara or sausages and mashed potatoes.
Setting good as was service overall but let down by quality of food. Pub up the road much better quality and at same price.
The restaurant was generally inconsistent. Some of the specials were good but the fish and chips was very poor. Overall the restaurant lacked atmosphere.
Excellent food and plenty of it, all staff very friendly and helpful
Lovely food..... good selection, efficient staff and clean area. Spot on
Had dinner here on our first night staying at the hotel. Because of the pandemic the menu has been drastically reduced. I had gammon and my wife fish & chips, both delicious using, I think, local produce. Followed by sweets which were equally good. Staff were very pleasant under difficult circumstances, they are very strict regarding the use of masks etc. Reasonably priced for a hotel restaurant.
