The Rising Sun
A great place for a sunday lunch for ten, with a good buzz
This place no longer accepts open table bookings (we learnt the hard way). Hopefully it will be taken off open table soon ........
We have booked this restaurant before by telephone and when we turned up they denied we had a booking. They could not fit us in and it was Mother's Day so it was difficult to find an alternative at short notice. This time, I booked through Open Table to avoid the same thing happening again. When we arrived, they had no record of our booking!! But because they weren't busy they gave a us a table. We asked for a dairy free kid's dessert option and they said they didn't have one. When I asked if we could have a reduction on the price of the kids meal they went away and came back to say that they did, in fact, have mango sorbet. The cheese used on the pizzas ordered for both the adults was not very nice and we were disappointed with our meal. Overall, they seem quite disorganized and the food is not good enough to overlook this. I would therefore not recommend this restaurant.
Again, another completely new crew... Staff seem to change faster than... Food was hit and miss - in quality and ingredients (random variations), service, while friendly, was completely overwhelmed by half empty restaurant. Good selection of beers.
btw, when are you going to take the 2+ year old menu off the OpenTable listing?!?
Staff were extremely helpful especially moving us to a table suitable for children (originally given a high table)
Very relaxing environment.
We have been to the Rising sun many times last year for lunch during the summer and always enjoyed the food and great out door space. We went for dinner this time with our parents and was very disappointed at the service and quality of food. When we arrived there was no one to greet us, we were just told by a chef who was sat at a laptop to sit anywhere. We sat for around 20 mins with no one coming to our table. The chef then shouted at a waitress to come of her break to serve us. She was not happy and came to our table in a very unprofessional grumpy manner. The service then continued like this for the rest of our visit. The food was not too the same quality as before the fish and chips were dry and bland and the pizzas soggy. For desert we shared a cheese board which had obviously been prepared before hand as the cheese was dry as if it had been left out uncovered. When we received the bill we also were not given the option to remove the service charge as it definitely did not deserve a 12.5% tip. We loved this friendly pub last year and recommended to many friends. However, after this visit we would think twice about reffering friends to this pub.
Enjoyed a very good Sunday lunch. Will come.e back again
Wonderful every day's pub. Good value for money and tasty food with a broad beer selection. Very nice garden and child friendly.
The service is still hit and mostly miss. It often feels that the very young staff are there on a work experience without their heart being in it.
Good selection and rotation of beers, although availability could be improved.
Leaving the 'tip' open on the credit card machine after already charging a service charge is a no-no.
Bring the old Italian - staff and menu - back.
Simply lacking atmosphere compared to previous incarnation. Food ok. Overcharged for glasses of wine not indicated on wine list.
Still not much improvement on the service side. We want the old staff and menu back please!
England Wales - very busy but food and service were fantastic.
The Rising Sun, formerly The Alba, is (was) a bit of a regular local restaurant for us. This was mainly due to the charming service and great Italian food. Unfortunately, since the rebranding the sun has set on most of these aspects. The refurb has definitely improved the layout, but the service, apart from a small core of the retained staff, is struggling. Sometimes, I am wondering whether they will make it. As for the food. While retaining a small selection of the woodfired pizzas (still some of the best in the area), the rest of the menu has gone same same standard pub grub of burger and steak, stopping short of the breaded (dreaded?) scampi. Don't be mislead by the menu on the website. That was the good old days.
Rare steak not rare. Service chaotic. In short this is a pub that has a few tables for food. In fairness the pizza main was good but teh garlic bread starter was dry as a bone. Hard to get waiter attention when needed and in short we were glad to get out.
I am sorry but on this occasion we had a bad experience at Alba. Our 2-year-old boy was served a child meal visibly heavily covered in salt - it was inedible for an adult and hugely inappropriate for a child. After a complaint it was taken off the bill and our boy shared his sister’s pizza.
We had an early booking so the place was not busy, but the service was terrible: for example, we had to ask several times for the children’s juices. They eventually arrived: small tumblers. This would have been fine, but the staff then added them to the bill for a total of £4.80 when they were supposed to have been inclusive with the meal. Again we had to make a complaint to get the charge removed.
I am sorry for this bad review, but it is made in the hope that things can improve as we have enjoyed the Alba previously.
This was a treat to myself, between meetings. The place was almost empty, but it's cosy enough. Service was excellent. A zucchini tempura was at least four times the helping I'd needed, as a starter, but very fresh. A chicken escalope was slightly bland; it came with superb chips and fairly tired rocket.
I'd go back, as it's promising. I probably went on a quiet day, and late afternoon. Next time, we'll try a busy evening.
I was VERY disappointed as my reservation was not NOT respected and I was told that they didn't have any online reservations Only reservations made by phone was accepted . I ended up sitting outside ! Not what I had in mind when I made a reservation for three .
Always friendly service and food is good (great pizzas!)
