The White Lion

After several walks past this beautifully, idyllic pub we finally book a table to eat on Christmas Eve. The food was amazing and such a good price too. The setting was just so cosy and calm and the staff were very friendly and attentive. As soon as we can, we will be visiting again and can’t wait!

My first visit to The White Lion was on Tuesday 22nd December. I booked a table for two with 3 weeks notice to visit for a three course traditional Christmas dinner.
When we arrived we entered a busy small bar and were told our ‘Reserved’ table was next to the entrance door. So every time someone entered or left we felt a draft. The bar was not full of fellow dinners, rather than dog walkers and locals eating snacks and drinking.
In total there were 3 dogs who back throughout. In fact on arrival on of the dog owners told us to be careful as the dog had been in the chair.
I fully appreciate that The White Lion is a traditional pub however I did Not expect to share my Christmas roast with 3 baking dogs.
The service was very good and friendly.
The celeriac and hazelnut soup was as good a soup as I’ve ever tasted.
Having finished our starters, the staff obviously got a conscience and ask us it we’d like to move to a quilted bar.
We jumped at the chance.
The main Christmas dinner was good and plentiful.
The Black Forest trifle was to die for.
It was such a shame that we were squeezed into the very Public bar with 3 dogs for company. The staff were first class and the food was very good.

Wonderful mid-week eatings!

Have always enjoyed the White Lion as it is a friendly and relaxing place to be. We sat next to the open fire which adds to the experience. Only disappointing bit was that they replaced watercress with other leaf salad and if my cheese bacon mix was Stilton (which it was supposed to be) I'd eat my hat. The beef medallions were delicious however. Beer always kept well. Slightly overpriced for what it is.

Lovely meal, all 3 courses for both of us. Friendly and attentive staff. Will be back!

A great place to aim for if you are cycling or walking in the area.

The White Lion was a lovely setting for a Sunday lunch. The staff were helpful and the food was delicious - the best Sunday roast that I have had for a long time.

A proper English country pub. We visited on a damp autumn Sunday afternoon, and were greeted with such a lovely ambience and the fire roaring next to our table which was gorgeous. We had to wait ten minutes for our table but were shown to their heated marquee and offered drinks whilst we waited so this wasn’t a problem at all. Staff all wore masks, and there was a one way system in place. Myself and my husband went for the beef roast which was one of the best we’ve ever had in a pub/restaurant. The meat was cooked so well and the vegetables were so flavoursome. We requested extra gravy as it was so yummy. The children’s hot dog and chips was very plain, but our daughter had no complaints. This pub is also in a great spot for countryside walks. We’ll be back!

Our second recent visit was just as superb as the first. Excellent food ( the chicken kiev is like no other) and everything extremely fresh, piping hot and beautifully served. Lovely ambiance, especially with the real fires, and very well managed from a Covid point of view.

PS the bass, the pies and the oriental beef are also to die for!

Perfect food in a great surrounding. Beer selection was great too.

We really enjoyed visiting and everything was fine. The food especially the Chicken Kiev which was quite the best I have ever had. Service very good as we were not rushed and so had a very happy and enjoyable dinner. Thank you to all.

We are regular visitors - which says it all. Adding a gluten free bitter to the beer list would encourage more visits.

Very good lunch. Staff were attentive and followed all the COVID rules so felt very relaxed. Ambience not quite the same but because of social distancing this could not be helped. Thoroughly recommend.

Excellent traditional pub grub with a couple of interesting twists. Lovely pint of well kept Goodens Gold and excellent house Sav Blanc. Friendly efficient staff and reasonably priced. Will certainly visit again.
