Tonari is our Wafu Italian restaurant. WAFU means Japanese-style, so our menu is a Japanese take on Italian food. It originated in Japan through the love that the Japanese had for Italian food but wanted to incorporate some of their cultural flavors and ingredients to them. We at Daikaya Group and chef & owner, Katsuya Fukushima, are bringing this experience to you here in DC.

    A fun and delicious choice! All the food and desserts were amazing - would recommend the mushroom and cheeseteak pizzas, as well as the sesame martini and mochi sour. We will definitely be returning!

    Really enjoyed our appetizers! Loved the unusual mix of flavors and subtle but delightful crunch. The entrees were disappointingly bland by comparison. Also, the menu itself is fairly limited, which is fine. However, two entrees items were unavailable entirely and they were substituting carrots in the cauliflour appetizer (which, even so turned out to be delicious!). We dined early in the evening on a Wednesday, so the fact that certain meals were already unavailable was surprising. And, while our server was fantastic, the rest of the service was uneven. We experianced an uncomfortably long wait for our entrees, and one of the meals was delivered way ahead of the other two. I would definitely try this place again, but would recommend it to only to those who understand that rheir experience might be a little rocky.

    Tonari is delicious and inventive. The pizzas are fluffy and indulgent, and the pasta noodle texture is so fun and springy. It's a wonderful experience, and the restaurant itself is very cool. Definitely a good spot for data night or happy hour. Just remember to bring a jacket, it can get pretty chilly inside the restaurant.

    It was pretty busy so it took about 20 min to seat us? (We arrived about 10 min earlier to our reservation: 9:15pm but were seated around 9:20). We had the Restaurant Week special (The Bear inspired menu). Delicious!!! Hopefully they will keep the Mushroom Adobo dish and their Deep dish pizza from this special menu! Also props to the server who recommended the best cocktail! (B.W.B) definitely coming back for their Happy Hour! The Bar was lively!

    My partner and I dined at Tonari during restaurant week and enjoyed the 5-course meal. Overall the food was good, but not great. The pizza had too much oil for my taste. I would return for the ambience and the cocktails.

    Service was attentive but not overbearing. The food was excellent especially the pepperoni pizza and lamb ragu. Because it was my birthday they comped me a glass of wine and gave me cute candle with dessert.

    Our food was great, but the service was extremely rude near the end. Our group wanted to split the check a certain way which we were willing to explain to the server. The server immediately dismissed us as we tried to explain it and said she would figure out it out on her own. She also complained about us not “cash app or venmoing each other” after we told her we wanted to split the check. We talked to a server named Nick about our servers rude behavior. He was very understanding and said he would talk to her. I’ll only come back if I was not paired with the original server we had at this dinner. I want to reiterate the food was fantastic, just this one server spoiled the experience for us at the end.

    Delicious Lamb Raguu - must try. Everything else was tasty but not worth the service and embarrassment that came along. During the food week, the appetizing limited menu was great only on paper. Experience was altered on the spot by the service/kitchen staff with surprise look when asked about it. Given the poor level of service grats removal was announced to my guests - not what I would have wanted being the sole host. Even salt and pepper took 3 requests and a walk up to the kitchen area because the wait staff did not seem to know what salt is. Would I go back?

    The food portions were uneven. My friend was served more food than me throughout the 5 course meal, even though we ordered the same dishes. The quality of the food was not worth the value. The waiter was extremely nice and attentive though.

    Here for restaurant week--another outstanding meal from Tonari. The food was inventive and delicious, the service was outstanding--even though they were busy they took time to chat with us and made sure we had everything we needed--and the drinks were very good and very creative. Always a go-to place and Tonari remains a favorite.

    Our service and cocktails were amazing, but my group tried several dishes and the food was very hit or miss. We were disappointed after hearing great things from others, but maybe it was just Restaurant Week production standards? I would maybe try this place again, but I wouldn’t recommend it to others.

    We ordered the Inarizushi and broccolini appetizers, the Philly cheesesteak pizza half, and the maitako and red sauce pastas. All the food was really delicious. Service was friendly. However, the space is not particularly comfortable, and the kitchen staff seemed to be slamming hotel pans into one another (loud).

    Came in early for my reservation and was seated quickly. Service was friendly and had good suggestions on what to order. Their non alcoholic Tonari Chino is a nice refreshing option for people that want a non alcoholic drink. The food was also amazing. The princess peach appetizer was sweet, creamy, salty, and crunchy in all the right ways. The pizza crust had an amazing crisp exterior while being perfectly soft and fluffy on the inside. The cooked squash and pickled veggies complemented the rich salty cheese atop of tye summet squas pizza. The Philly cheese steak pizza was a wonderful marriage of beef cheese and onions. It was a truly memorable dinner and worth the trip and price.

    The food here is fantastic! The service and setting are a bit rough, but it's a small business with lots of charm and isn't a knock, just something that should improve as the organization matures.

    The food at Tonari was excellent. I also really enjoyed the wine selection and the espresso martini I had to end our meal. Service was okay (they were under-staffed and Sam Smith was playing at Capitol One, so there was a lot going on) but the food was wonderful and we overall had a positive experience. Will definitely go back when there isn’t a global superstar in town. Thanks, Tonari for a wonderful meal!

    The service ruined the night. We sat for 40 minutes before we had to go find a waiter to put in an order for drinks and food. Then waited another 40 minutes for any food or drinks to come out. Had to find someone every time we wanted/needed service. The place wasn't very busy either.

    When we first arrived, we were told we didn’t have a reservation even though we did and even though there was no tables sat at the time of arrival (so definitely not a problem to find us a table). Host definitely made us feel unwelcome even after he found our reservation. Once we were sat, we were sat the second to last table by the bathrooms, again even though the restaurant was completely empty at the time of arrival. We then sat for 15 minutes with no waiter or service prompting my husband to go to the bar and ask for assistance. He was met with attitude and that bartender came and took our order. Food was subpar and overpriced for quality and portion size. Majorly disappointed.

    Alexandra was amazing. She was so attentive, enthusiastic, and made great recommendations. The food and drinks were fantastic. The experience itself was so cool. I love that they have a spot that lets you take your shoes off for an authentic experience. Will be back.

    A nice experience overall. Liked the Japanese take on Italian food and appreciated the interesting flavors, like that of the cauliflower in anchovy sauce and uni pasta. Will go back again.

    The staff was excellent and welcoming. I had a delicious espresso martini at the bar. The mentaiko and corn pizza was like having a cream corn pizza. While I love cream corn and liked the pizza, particularly the crispy crust, I am not sure I would get that one again. I finished off my meal with the black sesame tea cake, which was moist and not too sweet. It tasted like an olive oil cake. I liked how it was presented with a blanket of whipped cream and topped off with the creamy coconut gelato. I look forward to returning and trying the pasta.

    Excellent experience! Alexandra was super attentive and helpful with suggestions. We sat in the section where you get to pretend to sit in the floor, but there is a space under the table to dangle your legs—how smart! Food was FANTASTIC—lasagna starter, half of the corn pizza, and the short rib pasta were plenty for 2. The black sesame tea cake and the basil gelato were great! We will be back!!

    The mentaiko and corn pizza, for which they seem to be best known, was as great as most reviews indicate. We also tried the uni and mentaiko pastas, which were not as exciting as anticipated, but were texturally perfect and solid, flavor-wise! Desserts were thoroughly enjoyed across the board (black sesame tea cake & budino). We’re certainly excited to return, as well as to try the adjacent dessert bar!
