Yakitori Hachibei - Chinatown Hawaii
My partner and I wanted to try this place out but couldn't get our schedules aligned until recently. Made reservations via OpenTable for the time that we wanted. Out table was waiting for us and were seated promptly. The ambiance was an earthly tone and very pleasant; you can watch the chefs grilling different items on the large grill behind the wrap around counter. We didn't sit by the counter and was on an isolated middle table for two. They have quite a sizeable collection of different items you can choose from and certainly each one has a unique flavor to them. Pricing is different for each dish so your cost/expense will be way different. Our bill for two came to about $110 including tip; we ordered about 6 or 7 items to share between us plus a couple of beers. I would've liked that the font/print size on the menus to be bigger so that we can read it more clearly and without having to shine our phone flashlights on it, or risk lighting the menu on fire holding it next to the table candle. We will be back to this place again.
Service was a bit chaotic. Waited a bit while other tables that came after us were attended to. There was a wait before anything came out from the kitchen then at times a flurry of items came out at once. Felt rushed and unable to enjoy the dishes during these moments. The food was OK. Nothing too memorable.
We came at opening with a reservation for the counter. I was last to arrive and the hostess had seated my guests right by the door. When I asked to relocate further from the door she made a big deal of it and only relented when I suggested we should perhaps come another time
Yes. We had a wonderful experience. The food was very tasty 😋 Some of the portions were quite small and made us laugh 😂 which just had us order another portion. Overall we enjoyed the experience and will return.👍
My husband who ate yakitori for the first time was the luckiest one because he experienced the finest yakitori at Hachibei to start with! We will definitely come back to this restaurant. We already spread our words to friends. Thank you for the great service and foods.
Hachibei is not your hole in the wall, mom and pop Yakitori joint you find all over Japan. It presents a more sophisticated and modern take on Yakitori but it’s very good. Located in the heart of old Honolulu Chinatown and a quick Uber from Waikiki, we had a very cool time at the counter watching the one Japanese charcoal grill master handling all the skewers for the entire restaurant. The $45 set course per person seemed like a great choice to start the three of us. Two appetizers, five skewers, grilled rice ball and ice cream pretty much filled us up. Hachibei is an outstanding choice if you want to get out of Waikiki and enjoy Japanese cuisine!
We went there to celebrate my birthday. It was our second time dining there, we went with a la carte order this time (instead of choosing set menus). The food was great, my favorites are Wagyu, pork belly, ginko nuts, beef tongue from the skewer section. The veggi salad was beyond expectation, I never really loved any vegetable salad (because they are kind of same and average) but this one was really really good! Simplest but freshest. Our sever was very attentive & friendly (not overwhelming), we had great time there!
That course meal was great. Will be back
Overall excelllent. I used open table to make the reservation and to confirm. I would suggest you confirm directly with the restaurant if you make a reservation on open table, to verify the table and seating arrangement. The table type that I thought I had confirmed was not reserved and I was not able to conduct a business dinner as I had planned. This was the only negative aspect of my dinner.
Excellent! Highly recommended!!!
Nice food with good service.
My go to for intimate dining experience. Great food and drinks. Tapas style.
My wife (Japanese), son and I thoroughly enjoyed Yakitori Hachibei. It is the best Yakitoriya/Izakaya on Oahu. My wife and I travel to Japan twice a year and Yakitori Hachibei is better than most of the Japanese restaurants we frequent. Robert is the consummate host and the food, service and ambiance are simply the best. We highly recommend this restaurant for authentic Japanese cuisine.
It was an uncomfortable feeling that our server must have mentioned at least 4 times that we had 2 hours to dine and that there was another group after us at 8pm. They hadn't brought 4 of our orders but yet our server came to us at 7:15 and said it was our last call to order more food. How would we know if we need more if we didn't get all of our orders yet? Don't have any intentions of returning again nor do I plan to recommend. Too many other places to eat that provide good service and an enjoyable night out
Great food, nice ambiance, friendly and attentive wait staff. This venue is nice for date night with significant other.
Authentic yakitori in a beautiful building! The menu is extensive so we decided on the set course. Loved everything (except for the chicken liver...only because it was...chicken liver :/).
Servers are super attentive. We felt like we were in Japan!
I have been here more than a handful of times, and the quality of food and services are consistently good. Especially when Robert is there, he is attentive and makes everyone feel so welcomed! I know I will keep bringing guests when I want to impress, and highly recommend Hachibei to anyone.
It is easier to Uber/Lyft as finding parking can take a little time.
Food was good, and I’ve had about the same or better at other restaurants in Honolulu. The grill appears to be small, and if there is a large group like there on Friday you will have to wait for awhile for your order. Overall it was a good dining experience.
This was my first visit. My dining partner had been before with a large group. Since we weren't sure what to order and we're not big eaters, we selected the $45 prix fixe dinner. Each little skewer was artfully prepared and presented. The edamame "croquette' was tasty, the Butabara delish (would order more of this next time) Chicken breast a little dry, chicken kakune yummy and the fresh shiitake was wonderful. the other items (pickled veg) were OK. Raw chunks of cabbage as palate cleansers had a tasty uzu type sauce on top. The final grilled onigiri was tasty but we had to take it to go because we were due at the theater. Green tea ice cream always a pleasant ending. Altho I don't understand why they charge for a cup of tea... no refill. Hot tea is an essential part of any Japanese dinner.
Good deal on happy hour meals !
Loved the experience. Everyone was friendly and nice, and the only feedback I'd have is that they could've been a little better about taking away dirty plates as new dishes came out and also timing of the food.
When you're the first to get to the establishment when it opens and there are not many customers, the ambiance is perfect. The food was delicious; Happy Hour was indeed a HAPPY HOUR for us with the yummy teba priced reasonably and the beer as well. When it gets crowded, however, you can hardly have a decent conversation when you are only two people sitting across each other. Nonetheless, we went there for the "eats," and so we were well sated by the time we staggered out the door. Their chawanmushi is to die for.
This is one of my favorite restaurants in Honolulu. Besides great food the interiors are comfortable and romantically lit.
Try the cream cheese tofu as a starter, so simple, light and creamy.
Robert is a gracious host to all.
The food here was good, but extremely slow. Service was absolutely terrible, though. We had stacks of dishes piling up and watched servers come over, look at them, and walk away. Our server rarely came back to the table, even when our drinks and waters were completely empty. We had to wait until we could finally flag him down to order more drinks. After waiting and trying to order more food, our waiter finally came back - but only to tell us it was last call on food and to order now, even though it was 30+ minutes before their listed closing time. So after waiting and trying to get someone to come over, we were rushed to order and get our. This is my second time at this restaurant, and both times have been terrible service. I gave it a second chance, but will not be returning.
I liked it
The food was excellent. We have a couple from Tokyo so they loved the brick wall and the atmosphere and the counter was good to see and loved to talk to the owner! Happy hour is great over there!
Quick to be greeted and we were seated 10 minutes before our reservations. Love the design and ambiance of the restaurant.
Happy hour for 1 hour from opening. Great selection for only $5 a dish.
Favorites were the Hachibei chicken wings, mentai tamago and the Hachibei ahi poke. Those were pure umami.
Planning on going again to try the rest of the menu. Everything we had was delicious and there were outstanding dishes worth mentioning. Mahalo to Robert and the staff for such great service.
Food is great as always. A little bit of a wait for the food as it takes time to grill over charcoal. Also, only 2 people taking orders so they are really busy and sometimes hard to flag down. Great happy hour menu lets you catch a quick bite on the cheap.
It was a great experience. I got to try the Torikawa chicken skin skewer. It was interesting. Quiet and good atmosphere for a date.
