Zacatecas Mexican Grill & Tequila Lounge
We arrived for dinner prior to our evening at the Reserve in downtown Neenah (Roaring 20’s Jazz music.) Our server AJ was very friendly and took our cocktail order right away. We were seated in a booth with full view of the television mount playing a Mexican variety show (singers, dancers) and it seemed like a nice atmosphere. We noticed the lighting was dark—underneath the central ceiling mount was good but on either side of the room the overhead spot lighting was poor.
As the dining room became more crowded we noticed there was plenty of wait staff and everyone was friendly. The nachos and salsa (standard fare at a Mexican restaurant) were fine but you will be charged $5 for a second helping, which we ordered because the entrees took almost 30 minutes to arrive. The food was delicious, ample portions, and well presented. The “Combinacion Un Poco de Todos” really gave a great sampling of 5 different choices from their menu, and the Chicken fajitas dish was superb with peppers and onions served flaming hot with the chicken and build your own tasty flour tortillas.
The 2 biggest gripes: food service seemed slow and cocktails were way overpriced (a rail whiskey and coke was $7, and a Wisconsin Old-Fashioned was $8). I don’t mind spending bucks on signature cocktails or high end scotch but these drinks were nothing special.
Food is always outstanding. Scratch margarita is the best in the area.
Delicious food and drinks. A bit pricey so not a place I’d go often. The scallops and shrimp dish over coconut rice was out of this world. Service was very good as well. It was our first time there and we will go back!
Wonderful location in Neenah, WI that in itself is inviting. Inside the ambiance is perfect. The staff attentive, knowledgeable and eager to suggest or explain the dishes. Mine was a party of three and we each had something different. All perfectly presented and absolutely delicious. You must try it. Oh and have some tequila!
Nice place great food and drinks
Going back for second trip
Ernesto mixes up some fabulous concoctions, Sergurio very in tune with guests, food was fantastic. Service better. Not a place to go if you want to do something quick but great place to catch up with friends. Relaxed. Recommend reservations. All truest take pride I. Their work and also heritage. We splurge and order off their specials menu. Looking forward to another visit!
Always great food. I have never been disappointed with the “Z”.... great people and great food.
Love trying the specials. Always great!
One of the best restaurants in the Fox Valley. The Special Menu is fantastic, always a pleasant surprise.
Immediate seating with reservation. Great waitress - very attentive. Delicious
The custom infused tequila makes the most incredible margaritas!!
Food was fantastic, great portions (we shared and entree and an appetizer and left full), cooked perfectly, and beautiful presentation. Drinks were wonderful, prepared with high quality ingredients. The service was stellar, very knowledgeable of the menu and had a great conversation. The chef came out to say hello and talk about the special feature of the week. One of the best dining experiences I've had overall in years!
Zacatecas is a class act. Always great food. Been a must stop whenever I pass through that way since mid 1990's. Never had a bad meal. The hospitality is always top notch, and the food just gets better...! One may think the prices are on the high side, but I for one don't mind paying their prices for the pure enjoyment I get from their hospitality, food, and service.
Went to Zacatecas for Valentine’s Day. Have been here before. Food is outstanding! A little pricy and wait was longer than normal but could have been due to the holiday. Will return again.
Our number one go to spot!!!!! Service is always impeccable and Ernesto never disappoints with the special Menus!!
By far the special menu is the best in the Fox Valley and the Scratch Margarita is the best! The food is outstanding with interesting ingredients and combinations.
The staff is friendly and knows how to treat customers.
Zacateca's never disappoints. They always have fresh, fun, creative and tasty specials. The scratch-made Margaritas are awesome. The servers are helpful and very friendly. Love this place!
Outstanding authentic Mexican preparation using excellent quality ingredients. The sauces... mole. and. pabalono are exceptional. The creative specials generally change every 2 weeks. The scratch margarita and guacamole / chips a great way to start your dining experience.
Ernesto and Heidi have a great command of executing a finely run restaurant and the wait staff is professional and so friendly.
A must for some of the best Mexican food in the region.
Another wonderful visit to Zacatecas. Their specials are amazing - sea bass with a white wine & garlic reduction on top of a poblano risotto topped with spinach, crab, mussels & clams - to die for. All the staff were so friendly, attentive & fun. Love this place
Every meal for over 20 years has been exceptional! They do a great job.
One of the best restaurants in the Appleton and Neenah! Service was outstanding.
There are some extraordinary experiences to have at Zacateca’s. The special menu changes every couple of weeks to keep things interesting. But, the quality - depth of flavors, proper seasoning, and how well things are cooked and presented are all the best in the Fox Valley as far as I’m concerned. And, the cocktails are very, very good as well. This is probably not the best place for cheap Mexican food. But, if you want quality and truly interesting flavors, this is absolutely the place.
The food was incredible and the service was great. There was a party of 18 that got served right before us, but is a relatively small establishment, we didn’t have to wait nearly as long for our food as I expected given the size of the large party.
My wife and I have been there many times and have always been very pleased with the menu and drinks
Overpriced, not great food. I’ve had much better from scratch margs.
My review for this visit is poor overall. Reservation was for 630pm. Arrived at 620pm and waited for 25 minutes to be seated. There were open tables. We let the waiter know we had an 8pm show to catch but at 725 still had no food. We cancelled and received the bill for 1 drink. Usually love the food and service, tonight, not so much. The regulars were working too. Not impressed. It will be a whole before we go back
This is our second visit to this gem. I had the scallops and they were done to perfection. Husband had the flank steak dish and won the vote for best plate of the four. Don’t miss the lemon dessert.... a lovely evening.
Nice ambiance and friendly, helpful (to a fault) waitstaff. Good margaritas from scratch. Food is good, but after many trips to the restaurant I can say that I have an upset stomach shortly after finishing the meal each time regardless of what I order.
Zacateca's is not your typical Mexican restaurant. Oh, you can order tacos, burritos, or any of that standard Mexican fare, and it will be delicious, but you will be missing out on some of the BEST Mexican food of your life. My husband and I eat here regularly - at least once a month, if not more often. We always order from the Special Menu. Always. And we have never been disappointed. Not once. In fact, there are times when we've left and said: that's the best meal I've had there. And this happens all the time. The food is consistently outstanding. The ingredients fresh. They're making magic in that kitchen, so it will take a while to appear on the table...but it is worth the wait. We celebrate nearly every occasion at Zacateca's: New Years, Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, Father's Day, Birthdays, even our Anniversary. Ernesto and his staff make every meal memorable. If you're looking for cheap Mexican food, this is not the place for you. This is Big-City worthy cuisine. Embrace and enjoy it.
We were able to sit in one of the private booths--kind of like your own little room. That was very nice for a data night! The server was nice and provided good advice on food and drinks--all of which was good. But, it took a long time to get the food, and the waiter forgot about our drinks. That said, he handled it very well. He apologized about the drinks, and then did not charge us for them. He then also apologized for the long wait for the food--stating there was some sort of drama going on in the kitchen. Alas, when the food arrived, it was very good! Overall nice experience, and I appreciate how the waiter handled his mistake, and the kitchen's delay.
Fantastic food and drinks along with excellent service.
We love Tecas! They have the best scratch margaritas, food, and service.
We had a tremendous meal here and will definitely be back. The waiter was very knowledgeable and owner are very helpful and creates great drinks and dishes. The menu is constantly changing. We will definitely be back!!
The best Mexican in the area. Their specials are always different & delicious and the staff are all so friendly.
Absolutely excellent and ambiance and food. Ernesto explain the menu complete with iPad pictures. Delightful time and great space together with friends. Best experience in a long time and will be back!
Amazing infused tequila selections and craft cocktails, and the entrees were distinctive and simply amazing! Hats off to Ernesto and his wife for this hidden gem.
Food was amazing. Service was not very good.
Their salsa kind of tasted like pasta sauce -- not the best first impression for a Mexican place. We ordered a feature appetizer -- pork belly & guacamole. It was very good. My chicken fajitas were very tasty. My husband's specialty tacos were not his favorite -- beer batter on the meat was not that great. In general, their specials were adventurous, but unfocused menu items -- too much going on. Their simple, traditional menu items seemed to be pretty good. Kind of mixed experience. The service was great. The ambiance and decor is nice. Overall, we had enjoyed it, but it was pretty pricey for what it was. Dinner for 3, with 1 drink, one appetizer, and a special order of salsa ($3 alone) cost about $100.
I highly recommended getting one of their specials that change ever couple of weeks. The specials are true authentic Mexica cuisines not "Americanized" Mexican which they have also if that's what your looking for. Waiter knew the menus and the drinks by heart (unbelievable cocktails) very attentive and brought my 8 and 12 year old boys (picky eaters) and they eat everything on there plate
