It was our first dinner meal in Shinjuku and the whole experience in the restaurant really ended with a BANG~!
I had a reservation at 8.45pm but we had arrived 1 hour early and asked if we could be seated. The Host (a middle aged guy with specs) confirmed our bookings with open table
I have a booking for 8 people ( I was a tour leader), despite our request we were not accommodated on the "boat".
Fish was OK , but overpriced, the most disappointing was that my personal order was not completely fulfilled ( I have fish half grilled half tempura), I had to wait until almost all party finished their meals and I still waiting for half of my order after two reminders with management. Finally I got partial refund but led hungry and disappointed. A bit of fun of catching you own fish could not compensate the service failure.
Would not recommend my clients
Absolutely a great spot to go for a unique experience. The staff were extremely helpful and engaged in the theme of the restaurant, and several of them spoke very good English (which was more than a little helpful). It seemed that the entire restaurant was involved in the experience, as they would announce when you made a catch and everyone would applaud, which was a fun touch. Eating here was probably the most unique and interesting dining experience I have ever had and I cannot recommend it enough to anyone feeling a little adventurous.
We felt very diappointed about this dining experience. It was due to the followings:
1. We booked the table for 3 inside the boat at 20:45 on 19.9.2017. We arrived at about 20:30. The reception lady led us to table far outside the boat so we requested to change to the table inside the boat or we would like to wait for awhile. However, the lady just said "NO". We have no choice, we seated as assigned.
2. Two of us went fishing while one was sitting to take care of our bagages. During the fishing, we luckly catched a fish. We expected that the staff would handle the fish and provided to us with greeting acts eg hitting the drum and joyful sound as the staff used to serve another client. We had nothing but just waiting for the staff's care!
You can't beat having a boat and a makeshift "lake" in the restaurant! The setting is really awesome. I felt like being inside and outside at the same time. I love that we can fish for our own fish, however at first, it was a bit unnerving with the fish thrashing about. I liked that the restaurant was quite casual so you can fish and then go back to your table to eat at leisure. The fishing poles are around the restaurant so you can just take one and fish. Be careful to look around you though - other guests may be flinging their rods around and those hooks are sharp! When you finally catch one, you put it in the net and hand it to the waiter. They beat the drum to celebrate the catch and then you tell them how you want it to be cooked. You can also ask what they recommend for the type of fish you caught.
You get as much as your fish provides so there's no surprise there. In fact, what's great is that you can even eat the bones of the fish so it doesn't feel like you're wasting any part of the fish you caught. The fish can be fried, and OMG they are so crunchy like chips! Addicting. You can also use the bones to put into miso soup, and it is equally amazing because it provides the soup with a very seafood-y flavor.
Of the options in which to prepare the fish, I don't think you'll find anything that doesn't taste good. However, I would recommend varying up the preparation method. We chose two fried options and felt it was a bit too much (probably because we chose those for our 2 biggest fishes too). The fish is fresh and very tasty.
Overall, I'd do there again. The next time, I would wear something that I wouldn't mind getting splashed by fish in, and something that wouldn't easily get hooked by the fishing pole. Overall a fun experience especially if you have family in town! Make sure you have reservations!
The atmosphere is fun since you get to fish for your food and the staff was super friendly. The food itself left a lot to be desired, lacking in flavor and over fried tempura (greasy). Also, even though we had made reservations, we were stuck in a corner table where you couldn't see the boat and next to all the cleaning supplies, etc. The cost is extremely high for the quality of the food.
Waiter had trouble taking order, and even though their was English menu, and we pointed at pictures, he missed two items. Then when we asked about them, he nodded and still never got them for us. We then had to complain to management who just said sorry and did not offer to get us the items. Worse yet, this is a fishing restaurant so we caught 3 fish. They managed to lose one and when we asked, they told us there was only two fish caught by us. We then had photos of three of us with our fish so they knew they were wrong. Again nothing done but an apology. Worse place to eat in Tokyo by far...then when you get then bill, you will realize what overpriced means!
