Zen Japanese Restaurant
Service was fast and friendly. Food was exquisite and creative. Ingredients were fresh.
Great service and food. Amazing overall experience. Highly recommended.
The ambience and decorations don't quite fit with the prices though. We were way over dressed ! When you pay $180 for a course meal, you kind of expect better ambience.
I had wonderful lunch with family and friend visited us from HK, their excellent services and Foods are best in town. Especially the Tai head set, even the slice of ginger taste so good too. Our family are super fans and will go again.
One of the most over priced Japanese restaurant in Markham, since the move to Markham, the restaurant is focus on Chinese client and it lost the original Japanese atmosphere and culture. The lunch menu is extremely over price, we have a female friend order a grill miso mackerel off the lunch menu, it was priced at $18.5 and with no soup, rice. if you want to add rice and soup it will cost you another $5.5. It came out with one thin slice of Mackerel, and the taste is just so so. This is ridiculous for such a price.
I had a Chirashi, if you know what a proper Chirashi in Japan is, it is supposed to be slice of sashimi onto of sushi rice. And with so many places I had Chirashi in both Japan and Toronto, Zen is the only restaurant to put small chucks of sashimi with a 8 slice of sashimi on it. As you know the small chucks are normally coming from left over parts. This place is just not simply over price, it is a place does not take pride on Japanese culture and food. The original owner is Japanese when it first open many years ago. And I was a customer back in the days. Now I don't even know if the owner is still the same Japanese only, now I will say the chef and server are at least 70% Chinese. I will not recommend any of my friend to Zen if they want to have a true Japanese food experience. There are more authentic Japanese restaurants in Toronto now
I did mention that it was a birthday on my reservation but nothing was done..
A bit disappointed on that..
It’s good but not as good as before. Rice for omakase was kind of hard. I would give it another try next time.
Wish the waiter/waitress would understand and speak English better. Very frustrating to order or know what they were talking about.
Too noisy... it’s the second time in last two months we had lunch over there..
Food is excellent. Presentation is great. The only thing about this experience is that I have a feeling Of rush. Rush to order and rush to settle the bill.
should be Top3 japanese restaurant in town. Great food with great service. Best sushi ever had in toronto. Will go back for sure.
I come here often, and everything excellent as always! The Omakase is a must
Best sushi and desert
Authentic Japanese restaurant with ingredients imported from Japan. The sushi is amazing, I got the omakase and enjoyed every dish. We even ordered more from the menu. Best spot in the house is to sit by the bar so you can watch the chefs make your food. Staff is very attentive and polite. Make sure you have reservations as the restaurant can get busy and it is not very big.
My wife and I have been coming to Zen for several years now. The food and service have always been consistently great and amazing. Seafood is always the freshest and some fish are flown in from Japan. We've celebrated our wedding anniversary at Zen for 3 straight years and we always leave wanting more. We always look forward to their homemade desserts.
We wanted to try omakase for a friend’s birthday, so we came to Zen. The appetizers and each bit of sushi were delicious, though admittedly about half of the nigiri sushi tasted like we could get elsewhere. Nothing too special about them but the rice was the perfect texture. The last few nigiri sushi served to us were amazing though. The uni, o-toro, and the Negi-toro handroll just melted in our mouth. Definitely a great experience to try once but it is a little too pricey to go back.
Service could be more attentive for what is charged. Its quite slow.
the fish quality was not worth the money. Better to go to rin sushi, tachi or shoushin
We ordered Omakase sashimi and sushi for lunch and the provided sushi and sashimi was great.
Zen is always good , consistency in service and food
First impression is everything. Service was and food was just a little above average.
1. Reserved two seats at the bar, and when I arrived they did not provide that to me. I was asked if I called in, I said no I did it through their website. Not once did it say anywhere that I had to call in to reserve the bar.
2. Even after we finished eating, there where still 4 empty seats at the bar that were never taken
3. Their Lobster Tempura was horrible. The first attempt, it came out soggy. The batter was not cooked long enough OR it sat there for a long time. It was so bad I had to send it back. On the 2nd attempt, the tempura was a little better, but the lobster was overcooked. The Chefs definitely didnt know how to do it right
The only positive note was their other Appetizers, Sashimi, Sushi, and Deserts - they did use quality ingredients and did try to make it worth $140.
Maybe if they honored my reservation I would have had a better impression.
This is our family ci
It was a long way to go for us and well worth the trip. Unlike similar Omakase restaurants I have been to, there was no "fancy" foam this or saucy that. It was plain, beautifully prepared, perfectly sourced sushi and sashimi and delicious sake. Let's face it: excellent sushi costs $ so we expected the hefty bill at the end of the meal and paid it happily. Not an every day occurrence but a delightful treat.
I booked this lunch based on reviews
It was perfect
Foods and services are beyond excellent. A bit expensive, recommended for special occasion only.
Authentic and fresh Japanese food with a great customer service. Highly recommended to experience a high quality Japanese cuisine.
A very comfy place for authentic Japanese food and very friendly staffs.
Food quality up a notch from typical sushi lunch place as are prices - but i understand why. Rating for me is is 4 plus
Great authentic Japanese food. Service was good and the Sushi was great. It's not your typical sushi joint. The udon soup was also fantastic. It's more expensive than most but it's a very different experience.
$48 for a bowl of sliced Wagu beef on rice is not right. $18 for a grilled black cod piece of 2 inches is over price to me. Food tastes good but not deserving the price tags.
I did not order the sashima and sushi so no comments there. You can see the high price tag from their tasting menu on their web site.
Authentic Japanese cuisine. Omikaze is one of the best in the city.
I had an excellent experience dining at Zen during lunch, and would love to go back again.
I was amazed by the food quality on the first visit a year ago, however, the second visit the food quality feels lowered, mainly the sushi rice feels not as good as previously.
The best sushi you can have outside of Japan.
Omakase sushi experience was amazing. The chef hands you each piece and explain what the fish are, and where they're from. Every piece was so fresh, flavourful.. just amazing. Omakase is expensive but it's definitely worth the price. Would love to go again.
Was there for anniversary. Just great. I was worried portion might be too small for omakase but it was just enough for us. I recommend ordering full omakase set along with gyu beef. Stunning.
The sushi bar experience with the Omakase was amazing! The food comes to you in a decent paste. The waitress and sous chef would tell you what you are about to eat. Definitely worth the money.
On top of the omakase, we wanted to try their Hiba Beef Hot Pot, but the waitress was very honest when I ask if it was too much food and she said yes. So definitely, I will go try the hot pot next time!
Thank you for the wonderful time we had in the restaurant
Great food and environment!
Food and service was well executed however I felt rushed. I was in and out of zen in 1 hour after a $140 omakasa dinner menu. I would have hope there be a 10 min gap in between course.
Excellent service and delicious fresh sashimi and sushi. The appetizers were very flavourful and you just can't miss the desserts. Thank you for the surprise birthday homemade ice cream sandwich heart as well!
Excellent! We had one more join us and they were so accommodating in moving some partitions around squeezing in an extra chair. It’s not a large restaurant and they were fully booked but they were so generous and accommodating.
