The David Duncan House
We usually enjoy our time at David Duncan House whenever we go. We haven't gone in a while, however, and the vibe has changed a bit. The music playing in the background was more House music and didn't fit the atmosphere we're used to whenever we come here. It made it a bit too loud when we are more expecting a classic fine dining experience.
Food and service was lovely, however. Delicious and well-proportioned meals. Thank you for treating my mother to a birthday cheesecake. It was much appreciated.
First time trying out this restaurant. Overall atmosphere was great, romantic. We didn’t order much. We order 2 rib eye steak, they were very tender. Mash potato was amazing.
But we were disappointed with the oysters, the oysters that came were very small, barely had any meat in it. Could’ve because it was not the right season. However, the condiments that came with the oysters were great, especially the mango sauce. The side of Asparagus were too citrusy, and had burned pieces.
I will definitely come back for steaks!
We have been here several times and always enjoyed our visit and food. This time not so much. The meat temperature was not acceptable and the doneness requested was incorrect on two of the three prime ribs.. We are not in the habit of sending our meals back, never sure how they will get it right the second time when it was incorrect the first time. Response for service was very slow towards the end of the meal, eg request for coffee and again for the bill.
This was a very expensive meal for our family and it was a special occasion. We can't afford to visit again and have the same errors made.
I have been to David Duncan house several times over the years, it is not the quality of service or food, but the quality of clientele has declined like a free-fall. There was a couple with the ripped jeans and dirty T-shirt on with barefoot flip flops, Little kids running around in the restaurant and nobody is warning them! I can honestly say that I dress better than them at home. This is completely unacceptable manners and dress code especially for classy and exquisite establishment like David Duncan House!
Won't be back. Soggy burger and they still charged 50% for a burger that was 99% not touched (returned), apparently, it was for switching the fries to a salad.
We were a table of 4 on Sunday afternoon celebrating our anniversary. The atmosphere was great, the food was amazing, and the service spectacular. Highly recommend The David Duncan House for any occasion.
Very poor service
New menu. No more running bs. Everything a la carts. No longer what it used to be. Won’t be back.
We felt as though the Fine dining aspect of the ratio has changed. It no longer had that feel. Table could have been cleaned up after every course (crumbs on table still there), dessert served for our anniversary - could have been asked what dessert we would have liked rather than be provided one...), music did not fit with the ambiance of the room, we also had fruit flies around our table and flies coming in from the patio door.
Food was flavorless. We have been here in past to celebrate many occasions (baptisms, showers, past anniversaries) and this was not what we expected for our 5th anniversary.
Prices have definitely been inflated however they do not fair with the taste of the food. Example - one piece of shrimp for $12 seems a bit expensive whereas years ago a whole skewer was provided. The prime rib we ordered was a good size however without the gravy provided it did not have a good taste. New York strip - was grilled too harsh on the outside as well.
superbly great service from the hostess to the waiters and the food was fresh
The food was alright, but not great. The service felt very rushed as they brought out the main course when we were only half way through our appetizer. Summerlicious did not let this restaurant shine as it should have.
The food was awesome. Service was top class. Dint bother us and were there when needed. Ambience is very medieval but clean and maintain. 5/5
our summerlicious lunch out was fantastic the service was excellent and the staff very knowledgeable
The staff and food was far better then expected. The experience was something to remember. Definitly go back soon.
Can be more professional. Don’t think I will visit again even though the food is great!
Beautiful venue, superb service. Our meals were very good, but my prime rib and mashed potatoes could have been hotter. We were fortunate to attend during Summerlicious so the cost was very reasonable for such a lovely experience.
Nice ambiance but expensive
Probably a good couple, business lunch or dinner choice
Good steak, mediocre side dishes and very poor service.
Food came really quick and service was great
Horrible summerlicious experience, the food was terrible, especially the salmon, so dry. Service wasn’t good either, stay away from this restaurant.
Beautiful place. Good service level. Plenty of parking. Convenience location.
The place has old school charm, but everything else was just barely ok. There are so many better places with better values in TO.
The food was not bad - a bit above average for a steakhouse. However, the price they charge is $$$$. It was a bit better than the chain steak place, but it can easily run up to over $100-150 pp. In that price range, you likely should expect way better than a bit above average food and services.
Great place overall
Great experience and service
Service at the NEW David Duncan House was outstanding! So happy to see this old establishment be revived into an incredible new dining experience!
The food was lacking in flavour. The dessert was supposed to be a marble cheesecake and it was mostly crust and overly buttery. The trout was bland and the calamari was undercooked so my husband suffered from some gastrointestinal issues (this was the only different food we ate and he was in the bathroom the rest of the evening). Very disappointing. We receive better service and value for money at a chain like the Keg.
Place was nice and large. First time there. We wanted to try the summerlicious menu. Waiters didn’t offer water, pushed the alcohol, came every 2 minutes until we did order alcohol and was praising the person who ordered a $20 cocktail. Food was cold and was meh. Waiters rushed us by serving the food right away and asked if we wanted another drink while walking away. The bill was on the table as soon as we finished desert, didn’t even offer coffee. Waiter didn’t ask if he wanted separate bills like most do nowadays. We got one bill and then asked for separate bills. Waiter didn’t want to split it. When we asked for coffee he said it wasn’t included in summerlicous menu (we knew that) and then he said he would take the bill back to add the cost of the coffee. Will never go back and will tell everyone of this experience.
Fancy, love it!
Ambiance was great. Excellent service. Staff are very attentive and friendly. Everyone at the table was very satisfied with the food. Calamari was done perfectly. It was a very enjoyable experience.
This was not our first visit. The surroundings were beautiful and, in spite of the restaurant being almost full, quite peaceful.
We ordered the calamari which was very tender but had too much panko type breading for my taste.
The prime rib was melt in your mouth and the roasted squash and mashed potatoes that came with it were delicious.
My friend was disappointed with the cheesecake being only as deep as the small triangle of crust beneath it. She found it quite dry. My bowl of berries lightly coated in maple syrup, however, was just perfect.
Next time I think I will try the chicken as my main course ....
The restaurant is nice. It's a little dark but otherwise okay. Our waiter seemed like he was in a hurry and didn't feel like he was focused on us.
My steak was over cooked but it was a good enough cut that I let it go. The baked potato could have been cooked some more. My friend's prime rib was good but the mushrooms were too salty. The calamari was good but maybe they shouldn't cut them that big.
If they want to be high end they need to work on the level of service.
Overall the meal wasn't bad but I probably won't be going back.
Good environment and setting.
Went for the Summerlicious 2019. A bit disappointed on the quality of the food.
After reading all the reviews about the poor service, I was a bit skeptical. However, the service was fine and the food was ready in no time. The portion was pretty generous for lunch but the Salmon was burnt on the outside and a bit undercooked. The marbled cheesecake was quite dry and hard without any cheese flavor. The vibe and ambience were nice. Overall, it was a good experience.
Food was not prepared properly. Both dishes extremely under-cooked.
The food was not fresh and the service was terrible .
Great atmosphere, very good service, however the food was not great. The garlic bread was very good, but the food went downhill from there.
The Roast Beef was cut into swirls and not that tasty. Also, it was ordered medium rare and was quite red.
The most disappointing was the desserts. My wife’s cheesecake was very dry and she left most of it. She is normally a cheesecake fanatic.
Overall and considering the prices not a good value. Unfortunately we will not return nor will we recommend it to friend.
We got there a little early as we had been told it can get a little busy on Friday nights. The service was fantastic, the room is very tastefully decorated and creates a lovely dining atmosphere. We had a couple of martinis that were delicious. We both chose steaks and agreed they were lovely but at the end of the day the prices were a little high for just a steak!! Sides are extra. It was only after we got home that we found out this restaurant was participating in the “summerlicious” but we were never advised or offered the menu. Which is such a pity as we would of liked to of had the option.
Excellent evening. Food was exceptional and service very attentive...
