Overpriced, service not adequate for a 2 star Michelin star, overall very disappointing experience..
The food was amazing and the staff were very friendly.
The food was great. Especially the Foie gras nigiri and Wagyu Tataki. Service was excellent, so was the environment.
2nd lunchtime visit. As before fantastic food, service and experience. Has to be one of the best restaurants in London.
Fresh ingredients and feast for the eyes and tummy!
Really didn't enjoy the food. Just didn't taste good.
Service was sluggish and the atmosphere was very quiet and boring
Anniversary dinner was treated as fast food. Reminding you 3 times the need the table back. I had been a regular but unlikely anymore. Economics have compromised quality.
We have been coming since 2004 and love it. Can you open a restaurant in Cornwall
It was a pretty tricky start actually, with a greeter at the door who was impolite and really quite short with us. To be fair we were 15 minutes early and wanted to sit at the bar. She said “we don’t have a bar”, but I had meant at the long low table facing the kitchen, otherwise known as a bar! She was not an ideal first impression and restaurants should remember that the very first person you meet gives an incredibly important first impression.
ANYWAY! As soon as we went in properly the service was absolutely exemplary, elegant, swift, charming but never intrusive.
The food. I was absolutely unprepared for what I can only describe as the majesty of the cuisine here. From the first taste, a greeting from the chef that blew my mind (talking about first impressions), to the last cherished bite was simply extraordinary, and very much one of the finest dining experiences I have had. An example was the mixed vegetable dish. I always judge a restaurant by how well they cook their vegetables. Well this was a little silver bucket with a tinier container for soil and a sauce that I can’t even begin to do justice to with words. It was the greatest vegetable dish I have ever eaten.
I had the sashimi plate, which was about 10 different types of fish. The tuna belly was one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever had in my mouth.
We had theatre reservations, but honestly I would happily have spent the whole evening at this remarkable restaurant. The abiding memory is the calm focus of the chefs we sat watching. Control, calm, focused, intensely concentrated.
Good ingredients, great pairing with sake.
Too much inox and foil coverages.
soso very expensive
I have no words for their foods. It is beyond the expectation especially the Wagyu beef selection sushi. When I tried it, just seem like the wagyu melting in my mouth. The only problem is I don't think the service is up to standard of high-end restaurant. Staff should be more active than this.
Our favourite Japanese restaurant in London. Tucked away behind Bond Street it’s a retreat from the hustle and bustle outside.
Outrageously overpriced. Even the wine, some of them at 40 pounds a glass! Good sushi but does not justify the price. Ambiance cool but somewhat dreary. For businessmen with fat expense accounts.
Still the best
Excellent place, outstanding food and great service.
Michelin got it wrong. Weak servers, slow service, mediocre food, premium prices. Signature lobster dish was terrible. Tasted like bad umi. Perhaps we’re just spoiled in the USA?
We expected a lot for the two-star Michelin restaurant. But when we got there, seating area is quite narrow, you even can listen what next table saying clearly.
For the food, we chose summer tasting menu which cost 165 pounds pp. We expected it would be a worthy dinner for us to celebrate our anniversary. Unfortunately, dishes come with bored menu and endless sashimi. The only impressive dish is made by corn. Totally disappointed !
Lovely, welcoming staff. Delicious food. All made for a very enjoyable experience
Great japanese Restaurant. We had the Kaiseki Menu which was an amazing culinary experience for us. Nice to see the all Chefs preparing shushi in front.
Absolutely loved it I just love good food
Every inch this restaurant is amazing Food is to die for. Lovely to see all Chefs I front you cooking an preparing food just excellent.Staff all very nice price was also good Loved this restaurant and will be going back
Disappointing meal and bad service
Wonderful experience. Definite must. Will certainly come back as soon as possible.
I saw the chef touch the order paper receipt then touch my fish for do sushi which i feel not clean.
This is not Michelin quality at all, we had a $900 bill for two people and the food was extremely average and the wines were also not worth the £220 we paid for pairings. Very disappointing meal.
Very modern and good Restaurant, amazing food and very very good wagyu beef.
Average food, Overpriced
This restaurant epitomizes the sorry state of affairs in London compared to NYC in terms of food.
This one-star michelin restaurant serving Japanese food is comparable in quality to a decent neighborhood sushi joint in NYC but this one costs you about 250 pounds per person.
We left hungry after the kaiseki menu which comprised meager portions of decent Japanese fare served with much pomp but little wow factor.
I caught a glimpse of the owner enjoying a meal with his friends looking very pleased with himself, probably for having figured out that a Mayfair address and dim lighting is much more important for the London sushi scene than that wow factor.
These days, return tickets to NY and a decent sushi meal would cost less, so do that.
Amazing food, quite honestly the best meal I have ever had. It’s inspired me to goto Japan to find more Michelin star restaurants of this kind. Thank you
Good time there!Hope have a good ending!
The food materials are wonderful. Japanese accent is lovely.
Amazing culinary experience.
Phenomenal sushi. Arguably expensive for what it is but the quality of food and service was exemplary
Good food but not worth the price...
Excellent all round but pricey
Food super fresh beautifully presented
Staff very professional and welcoming
Nothing was too much trouble
This is the best Japanese we’ve tasted and certainly visited by many Japanese customers so very happy with whole evening
Outstanding food, fun to watch making of it. Expensive.
Wonderful experience very authentic food, delicate flavours and superb presentation. The ambience was great when we first came in however that changed when certain guests came in and were loud and not up to the dress code and were in jeans and sportswear. Ruined the ambience and at some times could not hear our waiter explain our dishes. Otherwise great tasting menu.
Little ambience, unpleasantly dark, few options on menu, overall feels overpriced... service is good
I rarely write reviews unless I had an extremely stellar experience or a disaster, unfortunately it was the latter this time.
My husband and I sat down for Umu’s tasting menu last night, we had added few items to that from the ala Carte menu so we ended up paying 800+£ for our dinner. At a value like this and more so at a 2 Michelin starred restaurant, a certain level of decency (I.e service) is expected. We had told them at the time we made the reservation and at the start of our dinner of my few (namely 3, not a complicated list!) food intolerances, yet at the conclusion of our dinner I get served a piece of chocolate, that after taking my first bite, I find that it’s filled with caramel and “sesame seeds” (one of my 3 named allergens)!! What’s worse is that when I pointed this out to the waiter, he just apologized, carried out with our transaction, and informs no one from his upper management like he didn’t want to get scrutinized for his mistake so he just kept quite!!
So we decide to inform the floor manager on our way out, literally at the door, to which he acts with a complete surprise, condemns the way the waiter handled the situation, then apologizes... maybe that’s enough and appropriate at a normal resturant, but again at the value we paid and at a two starred place, the least we would have expected was a simple form of compensation to showcase their sincerity and seriousness towards such a potentially hazardous mistake !
