We have been here many many times and have never been disappointed! Massimo is one of the most pleasant and friendly people I have ever met. He always has a smile and welcomes you warmly! The staff are always so professional, knowledgeable and personable. The food never lets me down. Yes, it is a little on the pricey side, HOWEVER, you defiantly get your moneys worth! The food is always full of flavor, is presented nicely and fills you up as well. Both the upstairs and downstairs dining are always kept very clean, comfortable and welcoming. Overall, my favorite place to go for a special occasion. Keep up the great work!!! We have been going for 6 years and do not plan on stopping any time soon.
Always have a wonderful meal at Ristorante Massimo. Tonight was just as good. They do have a new menu but have kept all of our favorites as far as I could tell. We started with what I believe is a newer appetizer, the butter poached King Crab with asparagus - very light and tasty. Next up was one of our favorite dishes the tagliatelle pasta carbonara with black truffles. The first time we had this at Massimo, the host actually served it and mixed in the egg yolk. It made for a great presentation. We have had to mix in our own egg yolk ever since, but it always tastes great.
For entrees, my husband usually goes for the veal chop but tonight had a halibut steak that he very much enjoyed. I had one of the new menu items - a seafood stew basically with the day's fish (happened to be halibut), scallops, shrimp and a local shellfish. It also had leeks and baby potatoes. The sauce was s seafood stock based sauce. I ate the seafood but left the potatoes. For dessert my husband had the mini cannoli and I had the apricot gelato both were excellent. The wine list is also one of my favorite things about Ristorante Massimo. It has something for everyone and includes wines you do not see everyday on restaurant menus outside of larger cities (think Gaga, Ornellaia (2!) and Sassicaia) . We had a wonderful 2011 Brunello Riserva (and loved every drop). I highly recommend this restaurant if you are in the Portsmouth area. I wish we lived closer so we could visit more.
The food was very, very good, and it made up for the few oddities that we encountered. We arrived on time, and our table was still occupied. We were happy to wait, and we pleased a minute or two later when the couple at our table left the restaurant. We waited another 10 minutes for them to "make up" our table, as they put it. It seemed far too long. When they finally seated us, we were at a little table jammed into the corner of the restaurant where the bench seating was SO uncomfortable that it was almost unbearable. I'd suggest that they retire the table or replace the seating. That being said, our dinner was fantastic. Really, really good. We'd go back again in a minute.
Amazing food and ambience! Server was phenomenal! Owner was welcoming and kind!
Kate was awesome, I brought a group that didn’t know each other and she kept the ball rolling. Food was fabulous!
We had a delicious meal. Our server was so friendly and knowledgeable.
Great meal and ambiance. We will definitely be going back again (and again).
From the front of the house to Cory (our waiter), the service was phenomenal. Cory helped us structure our meal and pick dishes to best suite the wine we brought, and he was very attentive. The food was also amazing. We had appetizer portions of the king crab, lamb ravioli, and the carbonara which hit the spot. For entres we went with the filet mignon, and my wife had the scallop dish. Both dishes were excellent. I cannot say enough good things about this restaurant!
As usual, a wonderful experience! Food, service, ambiance, all top notch. Massimo makes everyone feel welcome.
We went for our anniversary and the food was delicious and the staff was very attentive enjoyed dinner very much
Excellent, perfect location to celebrate an anniversary
Excellent service! Charming atmosphere!
A pleasant surprise while visiting Portsmouth, NH!
The food and service were superb! The atmosphere is romantic and cozy. It was a perfect location and menu to celebrate our anniversary. We will definitely go back next time we are in town.
We love to go to Massimo for special occasions. The food is divine, the wine list is outstanding, the waitstaff very knowledgeable. We always order the carbonara. The pan-roasted duck was a wonderful treat which you don't often find in downtown Portsmouth. For dessert we had the amazing panna cotta - to die for! You won't be disappointed!
We had a great waiter who helped us order great choices. The service was great and each dish was better then the last. I would recommend this restaurant all the time.
Couldn't find my reservation on arrival. Took care of it after a bit. Had read lots of positive reviews about a gluten free menu but upon arrival was told they do not have one. Food was delicious
Amazing experience, we loved everything about Massimo.
Great restaurant in the classic way Food Servuce
As always, Massimo creates a delightful dining experience. It feels like you are in what sadly seems to be a rare type of restaurant nowadays, one with top most service, elegance and wonderful creative Italian dishes along with an extensive wine list. Definitely is one of our favorite restaurants in the Portsmouth area.
Massimo is a very special restaurant. The service is outstanding and the decor lovely. My companion loved the food he ordered - lamb ravioli, and I loved the carbonara. I was not fond of my main entree, a meatball-sausage-polenta dish. Next time I will go to the upstairs wine bar and order the wonderful cheese apps and pasta with drinks.
The best meal my family and I have had in years. From the appetizers to the entrees, everything was cooked beautifully. The meals were just the right portion. Anything you get from here will be spectacular. I highly recommend and will be going back here as soon as possible.
Fantastic meal and an overall wonderful experience.
Dinner after our wedding in Portsmouth. Massimo knocked it out of the park. We were seated in a quiet, romantic alcove and served champagne on our arrival. The food was outstanding, the wine was memorable and the service impeccable. Massimo even stopped by our table to wish us well. No wonder Massimo is recognized at the best restaurant in Portsmouth.
Food was fabulous and the waitstaff were perfect
The atmosphere is very nice. The food was not as good as i had hoped it would be. Our server was Kate and she was incredible. Definitely made it worth our while.
Excellent food and service. I had a burrata appetizer and the veal chop, the person I was with had a sald and the halibut. The house red wine was excellent. I'm looking forward to the next time I visit Massimo so that I can sample a pasta dish.
One of the top restaurants in Portsmouth. It’s consistently excellent and Massimo and his team always make it special.
Not much to say other than awesome! The food portions were great, the wait staff is awesome and everything was served the way it should be we will be back!
Wow!! Ristorante Massimo was quite a fantastic for myself and my husband for his birthday this year! It is the best Italian in Porstmouth. We were visited by no fewer than 5 different staff, including Massimo! We received help with all selections and never poured our own wine. :) Very excellent experience!
excellent food and service, most charming dining room.
Below average food. Average service. Great ambiance. Disappointed.
Its not cheap but worth the experience. Ambiance and food was excellent. The owner is all over with a welcoming personality. One of the best Italian restaurants we’ve been to
What an enjoyable dining experience, with excellent food and great service.
We arrived a little early so we went to the upstairs bar for a glass of wine; Babich Savignon Blanc for my wife and an IL Fauno Di Arcanum Super Tuscan for myself - both very enjoyable.
When our table was ready, we went back downstairs, walked through the main dining area (which was a little loud) and were seated at a cozy table in the back room - very nice; romantic.
Everything on the menu sounded delicious but we finally determined we each wanted a Buratta and Heirloom Tomato salad; for mains, my wife had the lobster papardelle and I the veal chop - the largest I'd ever seen (of the 20 or so times I've ever ordered a veal chop at a restaurant). Both dinners were excellent. My wife finished her dinner but, sad to say, I had to leave a bite or two on the bone - I was stuffed.
I had pre-ordered a small dessert box for my wife's birthday, which had a little cannoli, candied fruit, a truffle or two, chocolate bark and I don't know what else but they presented it with a candle and it was the perfect end to our evening.
When a gentleman phones you to confirm your reservation - he's the owner; the same gentleman with a big smile and firm handshake that greets you when you arrive.
For every reason mentioned in this review, we really liked this restaurant.
Massimo is the best host greets and knows all his customers this is a fine dining experience not just a fancy restaurant you will not regret coming here
Everything having to do with the dinner was excellent. The food was delicious, the staff were fantastic and the ambiance was quiet and peaceful. I would highly recommend Ristorante Massimo to everyone! Thanks for making our anniversary a very special event!
First time at Ristorante Massimo. We were approached by our server Candice whom from the start won us over with her smile and personality. Not knowing the menu she made great recommendations for a starter. Candice got our drink order immediately and shortly after got us our starter. We eat slow so so time elapsed between the main course. Candice recommended the Halibut with Lobster Sauce. This was one of the best Halibut dishes I had. We got dessert menu but could not decide and Candice recommended a dessert box with all these goodies in them. It was a birthday as well and she with class brought out the dessert with a candle but was low key not to embarrass the birthday girl. The manager then can over and was as welcoming to us as Candice was. The entire staff made us feel like VIP’s. I will definitely have Ristorante Massimo at the top of my list for my next special occasion.
Great. Warmly welcomed. Wait staff knowledgeable, attentive. Drinks and food top notch. We hope to make it back soon.
I cook for a living....better than any food I have had in the North End....the attention to detail by the wait staff was incredible.....and the food was....soul satisfying....thank you to everyone who works there...I know how hard you work everyday for our enjoyment.
We usually dine at Massimo about 3 to 4 times a year especially for special occasions. Their menu, food and service are always excellent.
Two years ago I proposed to my wife and she said yes. It will always remain a fond memory and the ambiance food and staff never disappoint. One of my all time favorite restaurants ever
