SALT Kitchen and Bar
Service was a bit slow but what can you do. Food was good though
Small plates were great. Entree selection limited and somewhat overpriced. They managed to overcook a sous-vide pork chop. Very nice atmosphere and pleasant overall. Stick with the appetizers/small plates.
I understand that it’s Covid-time and all, but Salt has fallen considerably. The food is good, but nothing special. Staff are hard to hire, but they’re just not as attentive and courteous. The noise level was much higher. The wine list is a shadow of its former self; hardly Wine Spectator award-worthy. Many other restaurants that we’ve visited during Covid are doing a much better job of keeping up. Sorry, but… uff!
The food was outstanding but the service was horrific. There were only 4 other tables seated in the main dining area and it took more than 20 minutes to get our drinks. They had a very large party in the middle room and that was where all the attention was with no regard for regular diners. The waitstaff were completely untrained to the point where we had ask the server to get us spoons to eat the dessert they brought over to our table, had to ask them to remove our empty dirty plates and when I requested a wine list the servers response was "just so you know, if you order a bottle of wine I have no idea how to open it!" We were there for lunch, we had 2 drinks apiece, shared 3 appetizers, 1 main course and 1 dessert and our bill was $221.00 If your paying Boston & New York prices in New Castle, NH you need to deliver exceptional customer service.
I find Salt suffers as the season winds down. During summer high season it's solid, shoulder season it starts going downhill in options and quality.
We have been to Salt many times over the years and used to like it. The setting is lovely but the nice experience ends there. Our waitperson was the nicest young man who tried really hard. The food was average, except the obster bisque which was very good. But was served with a teaspoon rather than a soup spoon. We requested soup spoons. They finally were brought out after we had finished the soup. They said that because there was a wedding going on that there were no soup spoons available. Service was not smooth but interruptive. Some dishes were cleared, some were left. There were only 3 of us so it wasn't like we were a large, difficult party. There were other very big issues I won't write about because I don't want to get the waitperson in trouble. All I can say is there are so many other good places to eat in Rye/Portsmouth and we wished we had chosen differently. We had the idea that this would be a "special dinner" but it was spoiled by various events. $400 for a so-so meal is so sad. Don't waste your time at Salt. We are done with it.
Salt always delivers on delicious dinners and always disappoints on service.
This is too nice (and pricey) a restaurant for servers who are poorly trained (couldn’t open a bottle of wine, brought other tables’ dirty dishes to our to bus, served other tables drinks while my husbands pork cooled because he had no knife). Additionally looking out the window at dirty dishes on tables outside (from lunch?) was disappointing.
We have visited Salt many times and the service remains a problem.
Great food, nice server, delicious drinks, very happy customer!
We were first-time hotel guests here and reserved at Salt 3-weeks prior to what turned out to be an expensive but poorly-managed restaurant. We were given a table and menus, then waited for 25 min before offered a drink (other tables with couples arriving after us were served quite quickly!) Our delegated waitress, when finally arriving was pleasant and attentive. However of 4 dishes, the only one we finished was their signature lobster bisque.
We had been told at the desk that breakfast was walk-in. The following morning, we arrived, a staff member asked us to wait while she cleared a table. After doing so, she returned to usher us in, another staff member interrupted and said she had wait-list of at least 25 minutes, (although with no one in sight). Of course, we would never recommend this pretentious poorly operated restaurant and hotel.
A good informal dress, formal atmosphere dining venue. A somewhat limited menu, at least in terms of main plates, and rather expensive for what it is.
Wonderful service and excellent food in a beautiful setting! Thank you for making our 25th anniversary dinner a memorable one!
This is a quiet and civilized space with good service. The food is good, but I wouldn't call it outstanding. It is certainly expensive. You are paying for the ambience and the service.
Service was a mess, but food was delicious. Portions enormous. Pleasant evening in a lovely setting.
sat early at 5:30 after a drink at the bar, all servers friendly and professional, hostess sat us at a lovely table. server was professional, advised us well on our choices of food. food served in a timely manor. It filled up very quickly. Very nice evening. lovely hotel. usually go there each Christmas. loved the summer visit as well. thank you.
My wife and I went to Salt for a date night. We started with the charcuterie plate which was awesome. It had great meats plus super-generous servings of cheese. For our main course, my wife got a salad with grilled chicken and I ordered the dry-aged ribeye. I hesitated to order this at first because the menu said Market Price. I've never seen a steak listed at market price on a menu. However, my wife's menu showed the steak priced at $50 so I took the plunge. Imagine my surprise when it was served and looked like a steak that I would get at Longhorn Steakhouse, about 1/2 an inch in thickness. I ordered it rare and got it medium rare to medium and it did not taste at all like a dry-aged steak. I was absolutely shocked when the bill came and the charge for the steak was $65. What a total rip-off. I would not recommend this restaurant and will likely never dine there again.
The only positive was our server, Monica. She was amazing!
My favorite restaurant in NH
The food was delicious and the ambience was cool, but there seems to be a disconnect between the restaurant and Open Table because they were not expecting us and said this is a frequent issue. It made things awkward from the start but they did end up finding us a table in the lounge area rather than the dining room.
I know staffing is difficult so they get a pass...but our waitress made so many mistakes from wrong order, wrong drink, etc she said she would take off bill then she didn’t....but this is an exceptional place so we will be back.
Food was very good, ambiance was pleasant but service was horrible. Servers were friendly and polite but obvious that management was non existent.
It was our first time there and we’ll definitely be back! The food was amazing. The waitress was very friendly and polite. She was excellent with customer service! The restaurant was absolutely beautiful. Once again this place is absolutely amazing. Definitely worth every penny! I recommend to everyone!
Our dinner was absolutely delicious - the PEI mussels were the best I've ever tasted! I wish the broth had been soup!
Wish we didn’t get seated near loud children. Otherwise food was decent.
Don't think Salt is just a "hotel restaurant" just because it's in a hotel (btw the absolute best hotel within 100 miles of Portsmouth!); this place could hold its own anywhere. Service is over the top as is the food, all in an elegant casual atmosphere. Our party ordered a pasta dish, the swordfish, a ribeye and mussels, all outstanding. Highly recommended!!
I did not like my entree, but my husband really liked his food selections. The restaurant and service was very good.
Very nice meal and the server was very attentive
I don't feel I got the best food for the money I spent.
This was a very nice evening for the three of us. I had the lobster bisque, which was really delicious and had some nice chunks of lobster in it. I also had the salmon, which was delicious and came with a very nice risotto. My mother had the risotto which they modified for her dietary needs. My guest had the gluten free pasta which she very much enjoyed. All-in-all, it was a lovely dining experience and I’d be happy to go again.
Server was inexperienced, did not understand basics of available products at the bar and could not produce a list for choosing. Never considered asking the bartender for help, thus we were told a requested scotch was not avail but it was at the bar. Ordered a Caesar salad, which was scrumptious, but we were only half way through eating it and our dinners arrived. Again poor training of the staff who should not have dropped our meals until we were finished or asked if we were ready. Swordfish was prepared perfectly, unfortunately my Med Rare steak was purple in the middle. The manager had the kitchen cook a new steak (could have just put this one back on the grill), it took 15 minutes to return my meal (my date was done eating by then) , and the steak was fully Well Done in temperature and completely edible. They took the steak off the bill.
This place seems to have such promise but clearly there are serious issues with training in both the front and back of the house
In the past, Salt was on my favorite list to do a special celebration lunch. I was so very disappointed this time. It was my first visit to the restaurant since Covid restrictions. The menu choices were limited. The entrees we had that day were alright, but not special. They offered three desserts on the menu, one of which was not available. The other two we ordered were not very good and not fresh. Equally important to me is the ambience. The once beautiful upholstered chairs are soiled and missing decorative elements. If you’re looking for a special place to celebrate with family or friends this is not the choice I would make. While I understand the restaurant industry is having struggles with staffing at this time it is hard to justify the prices on this menu for value received both in food and ambience.
The dining area is beautifully appointed and has a big comfortable bar. The flatbread pizza we shared was delicious. Romaine salad was average. Our waitress was very nice. My Cosmo did not seem to have any Cointreau or Triple Sec in it. And while Salt is an upscale eatery, charging $16 for a glass of Kim Crawford sauvignon blanc is out of line. I can buy a bottle of this wine for $12 or less at the NH state liquor store. There were no other sauvignon choices.
Outstanding. Best lobster bisque I have EVER had and I order that whenever it’s on a menu. I will be returning as often as I can for that soup.
Beautiful dining room. Appetizers were great. The Swordfish entree was very dry. The creme brûlée was good, but the flourless chocolate cake was bland. Our server Ali and her timing was excellent.
Dined at Salt two nights in a row,
Beautiful Room, Great Service and delicious Food
I love the atmosphere and the Ambiance😋👏
Everything was great, except the food was, no pun intended, extremely over salted. The chef was very heavy-handed with the salt. They do put salt and pepper on the tables, so next time I go I will ask them to not salt it… if at all possible. Cocktails are great. Wine list is great. Servers were really nice.
Ordered English pea Tagliatelle with lobster. Two tiny pieces of lobster on top of gummy pasta with a microwaved sauce. I’ve never paid so much for such a subpar dish. I mentioned to the server that the dish was not good and the attitude was cavalier. No apology, no attempt to make it right. Will not be returning.
Calm and great food.
food and service was excellent. recommended for special occasions.
We had a wonderful 25th anniversary dinner. The staff and food were both amazing at making our night special!
Great setting and comfortable seating. Food delicious! Only downfall was the service, which seems to be exhibiting untrained staff.
Perfect distancing between table which made the dinner enjoyable because you didn’t hear other conversations
