Shields Tavern

This was a joke, there was nothing inside the tavern, it was held in a rear garden area at Shields. There were stale nuts and a bag of cheese puffs as the food...(Seriously, this cost over $50) per person so it cost us over $100. The drinks were watered down wine and tasted terrible. Of the three taverns that were to be part of the pub crawl, none were open so had to sit outside at two and the third was totally removed from the crawl. and it was not warm out after dark.
This was over sold as a pub crawl and I will attempt to get a refund from AMEX.
Great place to have New Year's eve dinner - the food and service were excellent and what an interesting building.
Disappointed in lack of entertainment. It used to add so much to the ambience but I guess they’re trying to save $$. Food was good - not great and expensive.
Enjoyed our New Years Eve Dinner. Food was really enjoyable. Having dinner by true candel light was fun. Go for the true experience of dinner at that time. My Son is 9 and loved the soup and dinner I shared with him the short ribs. He is not a chicken finger kind of kid. Loves good food.
My meal was excellent. My server, Mo, provided service with a song and a smile! I enjoyed the butternut squash soup, ale potted short ribs, followed by raspberry sorbet and vanilla ice cream.
The food, service and entertainment was good. We all enjoyed it.
Shields Tavern has been reinstated to a historic dining venue. My last visit to Shields we bought sandwiches on a table inside the front entry and ate at long tables and benches with other visitors. Avoided that. The new/ old environment was lunch very and food far superior to our last dinner at Kings Arms! Miss the historical ambiance provided by servers and appetizers!
I love dining at the colonial taverns of Williamsburg, VA. We hadn't eaten at Shields for awhile but we had a lovely meal on New Year's Eve. I had the short rib entree and my husband had the seafood pot pie - both were delicious. Started off with butternut squash soup (wonderful!) and ended with a fabulous chocolate fudge cake. I would highly recommend treating yourself to a meal at Shields or one of the other taverns if you're visiting Williamsburg. Wonderful step back in history when you dine at these places.
New Year’s vacation in Colonial Williamsburg. Food was great. Service great. Ambiance absolutely incredible.
Wonderful service, food, and ambiance! The hot butters run was a delicious seasonal drink.
Our Server was fantastic! The Chicken was Outstanding!
Our experience with 6 family members was amazing. We were seated promptly at a nice table at our reservation time. Seating was low for my tall husband and our server, Grant provided a cushion to elevate him which improved his comfort during dinner. Grant was polite and professional and answered all of our menu questions with ease. We felt carried back in time with hearty menu items that could have been made during colonial times. Having the serving staff in costume was an added treat. There was even dinner music provided by a harpist who moved about the room. Our hot buttered rum drinks were delicious as were our meals of short ribs and Shepard’s seafood pie. Desserts were excellent and finished a great experience. Highly recommended!
We made Shield's Tavern, our first dining experience on our past trip, and, we were not disappointed. It is a very casual environment, steeped in history. Our Server was informative, interactive, jovial, and, well informed of the menu choices. My husband ordered the short rib dinner, and, I ordered the fried chicken dinner. Excellent, albeit I took home part of my chicken and baked mac and cheese! Large portions! I had the rum pie and my husband had the fudge cake which finished our meal off perfectly. If I had one comment, it would be, be prepared for chairs that are very, very low!! When you are a Senior citizen, trying to make it down the stairs to the basement level, then, wrestling with the lower chairs, it can be, a challenge! Go and enjoy the meal you won't be disappointed!
The food and service was excellent. The wait staff was most attentive. Excellent dessert.
We were seated promptly, service was good as our waitress was very attentive. Food was very good.
We were very satisfied with our dining experience.
I felt there was not enough options at shields tavern with only 4 entrees to choose from. Our meal was just mediocre.
As with all the Williamsburg taverns Shields is awesome. Food is very good and service is excellent. Ambiance is great - how can you beat dinner by candlelight with live period correct music
Food was not hot and way overpriced.
Monique was a wonderful server and her singing voice added to the dinner as well as the strolling violinist. It wasn’t as crowded as we thought it would be since reservations were hard to get but maybe the foundation was limiting seating because of the holiday.
Good food, superb ambience and excellent service. Not crowded as we feared and getting seated at our reservation time was right on. Highly recommended.
Service was nice but food cost twice what it should have been. Fried chicken special was rubbery, braised beef had no flavor. Tasted like institutional food.
I needed a special place with the right atmosphere. I chose Shields's Tavern as we we're already visiting Colonial Williamsburg. Making reservations was easy and quick. Staff accommodated my request for a different table (I needed just the right spot) after initial seating, which happily was earlier than my reservation by 15 minutes. Service and wait staff excellent. Waiter accommodate request and took photographs. Excellent appetizer, excellent main and excellent desert in a timely fashion. Finally, under candlelight and as the evening wound down towards closing time, I asked my dinner partner to marry me, and she said yes. Thanks to all!!
Great service and wonderful music. Meal was pricy but very good.
The food and service was excellent. The ambiance was very nice. We learned a lot about the music and history of the Tavern while dining. The roving entertainment was very good. It was a great and fun experience!
We really enjoyed Shield's Tavern. I wasn't very hungry so I had the butternut squash soup and a sampler platter. The soup was outstanding and the shrimp on the sampler platter was excellent. We had a private room towards the back as it turned out so that made it special. We had had Easter dinner there 30 years ago so it was fun to reminisce.
My 4 year old grandson told the waitress he wanted bacon for dinner. We told him it was not on the menu. The next thing we knew he had an order of bacon. She definitely went above and beyond.
I was a little disappointed that there was no music that night. We look forward to that every year.
Thanks for a great meal.
Christmas trip with family
So nice, felt like I was back in colonial times.
Wonderful!! Great food ambience and music. We ate there two days with our colonial experience. Recommend to anyone who enjoys a step to the padt.
Absolutely fantastic! Love their squash soup and the tavern sampler platter. Server told us history of the oldest tavern and told us to go downstairs to look at original huge fireplace. Mandolin player was wonderful and had a great voice.
We had an enjoyable candlelight dinner at Shields Tavern. The waitstaff were very personable and provided excellent service. The food was very good. The menu reflected the historical period with some modifications for current taste. We were treated to live entertainment and an oral history of the tavern. The seating capacity is large but divided into many small rooms and a wine cellar which makes for an intimate setting.
On a two day visit to Williamsburg VA. This was our final evening. What a great way to end a nice birthday celebration. Good food and great service.
What a wonderful place to eat. I always ask for the basement as I am eating then in a space that is one of the oldest in the US. And a fine meal to boot.
It is always a treat to spend time at the colonial taverns, and Shields is the best all round.
Grand Illumination weekend puts an added stress on an already busy set of restaurants. Shields Tavern is a fun period restaurant with good food and a fun atmosphere. During Grand Illumination weekend reservations are full and groups and tour buses put a stain on the normally well-oiled system. We will go back.
What a wonderful experience! Food was great and the ambiance perfect! The service was fantastic too!
Food was delicious from the shrimp and crawfish soup to the bourbon pecan pie. Our server, Ashley, provided excellent service and gave us great recommendations on our meal choices. We enjoyed our visit and will definitely be back!
We had a great dinner and our service was very good......
Great ambiance, great service & good food. I would definitely recommend Shields Tavern.
The setting was amazing and authentic. The food was very good and the service was great! By far the best meal we had while enjoying our mini vacation to Williamsburg, VA!
