A welcoming happy service, authentic Indian Delisious dishes at a realistic price.
Amazing food, brilliant customised (!!) Curries, such friendly service
Mouthwatering authentic gorgeous food and BYO. Always a treat. Will be sad to see them leave Angel.
The food was fantastic and the owner has outstanding character! The owner selected our starters for us based on a few simple questions, we were all pleasantly suprised! Will be back soon!
Looks like your usual Indian restaurant but it's authentic Bangladeshi with personalised tasting. Loved the food. Reminded me of home cooking at its best.
Another Saturday, another curry in Spices. The difference this time being that Ali built a curry for me that wasnt on the menu. A few simple questions about what i liked, how hot it should be, the sauce etc led to a fantastic result. I cannot speak highly enough of this restaurant, if you like a good curry, you are in the Angel area and you can get a table there, go, you wont regret it.
As always another great curry at Spices, i dont think this place can be rivalled in terms of quality, price, portion size and taste anywhere in London, i really like this place.
As always, an excellent curry a place that is now very firmly at the front of the queue when i am thinking of indian restaurants in london
Whenever we fly over from Hamburg we always make a special trip to eat here. The food is authentic and you literally cannot stop eating. Utterly mouthwatering...drooling as I type... and it's BYOB to boot!
Ali is a lovely man, and the food was great. The experience felt almost tailored to us! Don't be put off by the not-so-nice street, or even the humble restaurant itself. The best curry I've had in London
Another Saturday another trip to Spices, the food was as brilliant as it always is.
This is slowly starting to become a Saturday night ritual for us, if you like curry go you will not regret it
Excellent Indian, firmly independent, with a wide freshly-prepared menu. Flavoursome food with a range of intensity. Bring your own beer and wine - excellent value and so much better than the "trendified" end of Upper Street.
Spices is one of my favourite restaurants. The setting is totally no-frill, but the food is very good. My friend had a vague idea of what she wanted but couldn't find it on the menu, so the owner just put something together for her which included all the ingredients she had named. You can decide yourself how spicy you want your meal to be and are allowed to taste the sauce when it's brought to the table and if it's too spicy or not enough it goes back in the kitchen! My food was amazing as well and just as spicy as I wanted it.
I will go back and tell all my friends about it. You get great food at a really good price and the final bill is never exorbitant as it's BYO alcohol!
Another visit another great curry, this has become my new favourite
I've been living and working in Angel for some time now, and it's surprised me how few good Indian restaurants there are in the area.
Fortunately Spices is a refreshing change - Ali makes a conscious effort to make sure any dish you order is tailored to your needs - if you need it more spicy they can easily do that, in fact they almost let you design your own dish.
Decor & service wise, it's like your standard Indian restaurant, but then it's all about the food in these places.
Definitely worth a visit though.
Great food. The manager/owner Ali can guide you to what you want by taste preference then the food is cooked freshly for you. This means you'll have to wait, but better to wait for delicious fresh food than something out of a tub like most Asian restaurants.
Chapel Market road looks lonely after market hour. However when we ventured further along the road to captured Spices. Ali greeted us on arrived. The restaurant was empty but the takeout guys were busy rushing orders out. Good sign.
We picked a table and glanced though the lengthy menu. I asked Ali to assist my selections. I had a desire for something great, new to my palate and for filling to my hunger. We spoke about the different spices and sauce bases before finally establishing my ideal meal for the evening. I'm a pescetarian. My companion then asked Ali to assist him to discover the great tastes of N Asia. The fresh make garlic naan bread was sensational and our starter. Lebu and samosas. For the main we had Moris Masala, mixed veg Bathi, pilau rice more naan, and another fish dish. The service was great.
I took the take out menu as Ali delivers to my area and I will definitely be ordering from them. The meal was delicious and filling. It was hard leaving.
As the restaurant not extremely busy it would be good for group bookings as long as the chef can handle both online orders, phone orders and restaurant diners.
Very good service and advices from the chief. Great food at cheap price
We enjoyed a friday evening meal at Spices. We had great food at a decent price - the place was quite quiet but meant we were served relatively quickly (once our order was taken..).
I'd happily go back again.
A great place to go with friends or that special someone. A cozy neighborhood spot where Ali, the owner and chef takes your order and recommends the best complimentary dishes. The food is fresh, delicious and always great. One of my favorite London restaurants.
This may look like your standard curry house but don't be mistaken. When we arrived the place was empty, we were asked if we had booked, luckily we had. No more than half an hour later they were turning people away, always a good sign. We had been there about a year ago and had really liked the food but wondered if it was still as good, it wasn't.........it was better. The owner(?) clearly believes in his own food and for good reason, its rare to come across a place with the right balance of price and quality. If you want something hotter or cooked differently, not a problem, as they will take care of it or recommend something that you will probably like. It's BYOB so that is always a plus, go you wont regret it.
If you go to Spices you are in for a treat. The food is delicious the staff are fun, informative and helpful and they take pride in the taste and quality of their food. They asked me what flavors we wanted for the evening and recommended curry's to go along with it. I love food and I love curry, so go to Spices.
Enjoyed an informal meal here with friends. Warm friendly welcome from the owner/host who is very enthusiastic about their food - it's actually Bangladeshi but there's a lot of cross over with dishes from various parts of India. All cooked fresh and had some interesting options, what you might expect from a home-cooked meal. Recommend this restaurant for good value, quality food and the warm ambience.
Whenever we're back in London we always make a point of going to Spices, an off the beaten track no frills super amazing fresh tasty authentic Bangla/Indian restaurant. The food is never oily and always cooked to perfection whereby you can still taste the individual ingredients. For chillie lovers, try the chillie chapatis with a medium (instead of hot) curries. They're very delicate with just the right amount of finely chopped green chillie. Forget wannabe can't wait to throw you out Tayyabs in Whitechapel and instead come here and be served and advised by Ali, the no nonsense owner.
I've returned to Spices countless times, with friends, spouse, parents and friends' parents. The owner, Ali, is always welcoming and swift to advise (and admonish!) us with menu choices. He actively encourages sampling and if you're not happy with a flavour he will happily add/remove chilies/spinach/tomato. The food is always exquisitely fresh and flavoursome; the puffy puri starters are top notch, although the pakora was a bit over fried and crispy. The main course curries (and there are plenty to choose from) are consistently fresh and extremely tasty.
The only downside is the length of time service takes (whether they're full or empty): be prepared to settle in for a whole evening, as it will be ultimately worth the wait.
I took my Mum to Spices in Angel as it's one of my favourites. It didn't disappoint! Everything is freshly prepared and as you can chose how hot you want your dish, you get what you ask for. I remembered the Brinjal roll to be a bit spicier, but it was still very good.
Will be going back for sure!!
We're regulars and cannot recommend highly enough. It's common to chat with the neighbouring table and discuss how fantastic the food actually is. Yum!
We waited one and a half hours before our order was taken ! They are ridiculously overstretched with one guy serving the restaurant while also taking a stream of takeaway orders on the phone. The food, when it eventually arrived was very good but who cares after a wait like that ?
As usual, lovely food, great prices and friends from abroad were impressed! I will come back!
Wonderful service and delicious food means I always bring friends from outside London to Spices for dinner and it never disappoints. Each trip is a new experience so all I can say is go there and enjoy!
The food was excellent and very good value. The staff were friendly, helpful and attentive. All round an excellent place to go and I'll be back.
Trully delicious food with a varied menu and interesting options available. This made Spices different from the typical Indian restaurant. The owner was also very good at telling us what goes with what.
We truly enjoyed our dinner experience and will surely come back. :-)
I just love Spices. The food never disappoints and I love the fact that the menu doesn't just consist of the staples (it seems) of Indian food, i.e. the usual curries, but has many different options. If you don't know what you want, tell the owner whether you fancy lemony/zesty flavours or tomato based and he'll come up with the right thing. The fact that this is a BYO place means the meals are always ridiculously cheap, I think we paid about £35 or so and that's with poppadum, starters, mains, rice and naan. I'll go again and also tell everybody about it!
Very good meat dishes, amazing breads. friendly staff, warning about spice level and good bollywood classics playing.
If you're around Chapel Market then this is the best Indian in the area (and I've been to them all!)
I've eaten here several times and I still keep coming back for more! Excellent food, great service and excellent hospitality from the proprietor. Highly recommended!
Whenever we fly home to visit we always make a B-line for Spices. This place is totally amazing when it comes to food.... just mouthwateringly original and brilliant service from Ali - the bossy but all-knowing head waiter. Be it on your head if you order chicken tikka masala, butter chicken or any kind of korma!
When my dad and I first got out of the cab I thought we were in the wrong street. Both the street and the restaurant looked desserted. The reason was probably that we were a bit early.
The service was great, and they are very good at proposing what you might like. The waiter guided us thru, step by step, so we could pick the best meal for us.
They don't serve alcohol, but they have a store on the other side of the street that does. So you have to bring your own alcohol. Very unorthodox, but it was kinda cool.
As always Ali and his team give you lovely service as they ply you with some of the best Bengali Indian food in London. We devoured everything, papadum with his fresh made chutneys, mita jal sasg balti with chicken and
Tandoori King Prawn Jalfrezi Bengal were amazing, 2 ordered of the buttery Indian Ghee Bhat rice and the to-die-for peshwari naan. My friend from LA who is very particular about Indian food was over the moon. Bring your own wine, no corkage fee, friendly warm and always a great crowd. We had a lovely chat with our next table over mates who were a delight.
