This is a still reliable standby with excellent sushi and solid secondary dishes. The mussels appetizer - a spectacular dish at Sushi-Ko, the prior version of this restaurant, is not nearly as good. But the popcorn shrimp is fantastic. Service is attentive. The ambience is OK.
Sushi Keiko was a total disappointment. We ate there several times when it was under previous ownership as Sushi Ko. The setting is uncomfortable - hard wooden chairs, bright lights, nothing conducive to a relaxing dinner. The food was mediocre, and the service (despite not being very crowded) was bad. I would never go back and was sorry we dined there.
We wanted to try the restaurant for the sushi. It did not disappoint. We shared rolls and a platter of the chef's choice. All were very good. The only complaint was the service. Our waitress was rushed and abrupt. She did eventually get help. We even needed to ask for plates - after our sushi was delivered.
Overall the food trumped all else, so I would go again.
Consistently great sushi with an array of excellent Japanese cooked dishes including tempura and udon. Fish is always fresh and it sparkles on display. Chef is very creative but also open to suggestions or requests. Family owned, which is a nice feeling. The sushi bar is the place to sit to watch the chefs work their magic and discuss what is special on the night of your visit. Valet parking is convenient and street parking is also available.
This used to be Sushi Ko, and the reviews I read stated it was the same quality food. Unfortunately, that just isn't the case. The service was great, but the food was not. The sushi was ok, but the green curry mussels were awful. I wasn't able to eat one. Also, there are only two wine choices and a limited sake list. If you are looking for Sushi Ko, this safely is not the place.
Great meal though the spicy green mussels, which are usually fabulous, could have benefited from more of a kick. The service was absolutely great. We had a couple of small children with us and the staff simply could not have been friendlier, more responsive or more understanding. Just a wonderful experience.
Sushi Keiko, at the site of the former Sushi Ko, retains some of the best of its past with a contemporary approach to sparkling fresh seafood and other traditional Japanese dishes.
I recommend sitting at the sushi bar and conversing with the chef about the day's best sushi and augment it with creative dishes from its regular menu. The Salmon Spring Roll is a fine example of melding a staple with an enticing twist.
Fresh, live Japanese scallops are also usually available for sushi or sashimi and shucked right in front of you at the bar. The tuna never disappoints and there is often toro, maguro and a less fatty version to choose from or mix in the Tuna Six Ways platter.
David, the manager, is a Sushi Ko veteran and a gracious, knowledgeable host providing menu suggestions as requested or simply ensuring service is first rate and effortless. The kitchen also delivers on items such as tempura, gyoza and, now, cold or hot soba and udon. I think I've been to most upscale sushi bars in DC and this is the best at a price point that doesn't dent the wallet. The sake and beer lists are sufficient so it all comes together at Sushi Keiko, which stands on its own merits now in a way you can rely on for great food, top-rate service and a pleasing atmosphere.
Although it doesn't look like the typical boutique sushi joint you find in many cities, don't be fooled by the street view. The sushi at Sushi Keiko was outstanding. The servers were very attentive and the atmosphere was very chill; something you don't necessarily find in Glover Park! The pricing was very reasonable and the food was very fresh. Although if you are looking for a great drink spot, their drink menu is pretty small and stands typical to DC wine and beer lists.
