I had a bad experience here before and wanted to try it again. Came this time and similar experience.
Some of the food is ok, but the sliders tasted like the bread was stale, and the surf and turf tacos were terrible. For how pricey everything is, you'd expect much better quality.
Service and environment were great, but food needs to up it's game. There's far better options for their competition.
We got to Swallow East around 8:15 on a Sunday of Memorial Day weekend....it was Raggae night. We were seated outside as requested. The food was very good. We had a lot of apps to share which were all very good with the exception of the tacos...which were bland. My biggest issue with this place was the crowds...it was crazy packed with 22 year olds. If you’re a 22 year old and enjoy waiting for a half hour on line for the bathroom...or waiting at the bar for half an hour for 1 drink..this place is for you. If you are used to more of a chill atmosphere...montauk has a lot more to offer...durhyas or crows nest. This is a very young crowd but perhaps we were just there the wrong night.
Food was good thought the Flank Steak was very expensive for what you got
Great location and food, but service was very slow and waitresses inattentive. Bartender was super sweet, we should have stayed and had our dinner at the bar with her!
The food here is absolutely terrible.
Everything from the 1 piece of cauliflower for $14 to the fish and pork tacos - it was all horrendous.
We waited 35 mins to order our and our dirty plates sat on the table in front of us that whole time.
The restaurant was half full which made the whole experience a little puzzling!
Would hate to see how they handle the summer influx of city slickers....
By far the best dining experience ever. The food was INCREDIBLE. Highly recommend the short rib, asparagus and shrimp and grits. Could've passed on the mussels. The servers were great, ambiance very cool (in off season so was not packed). Would definitely go again!
We had high expectations for this restaurant however the food was not that good. The fish tacos were so salty that they were inedible, and they were out of the 2 other fish dishes on the menu. The beet salad also disappointed and lacked flavor. The only things we really loved were the short ribs and the fries. I would not go back based on this experience.
Great newish Montauk restaurant. Amazing food and decor. Although this was our first time here, I know we will be back
Drove to location since on vacation were not that familiar with area in the fog; so a little stressed and looking for a great meal and chance to unwind. Imagine how we felt upon arriving only to find (??? We did have a confirmed reservation???) that the place wasn't open!! This of course resulted in us having to scramble to find a suitable place to eat while still driving in very hazardous conditions. Thanks Swallow East the result was that we had a lovely meal at Tauk!
Amazing food and service.
Great food as always!! My friend and I just sat at the bar, it was quiet but fun. We had a bottle of rose and split a few small plates. Food is very good and you can really go fancy or casual with the menu. I recommend the fries (very tasty!!) ... And I love the wedge salad as well. I look forward to going back this summer!!
Great for small bitrs
Not much to look at from the outside but once inside, totally different feel. Modern decor with beautiful views of the water. The cocktails were excellent as was the service. The food - wow! We were so pleasantly surprised because we had not really had a great meal all weekend in Montauk. This place was simply perfect. Everything we ate was spectacular!! Loved sharing plates and being able to try a lot of different options. We will be back!!!!
Wonderful dinner on so many levels. We waited at the bar briefly and had a drink while we waited - the bartender was super nice and made me a great "mocktail" since I'm pregnant. We then got seated at the dining room which was super cozy and tastefully decorated, our table overlooking an open kitchen. We ordered 5 plates which we shared (2 people) and each plate was great. We got the spring salad, beets, scallops, asparagus fries and skirt steak. Each plate was unique and delicious. Our least favorite was the scallop plate, more because of the accompaniment ingredients which weren't very tasty or interesting, but the scallops themselves were great and perfectly cooked. Everything else was outstanding, including the dessert which was a delicious lemon curd. Overall it was an amazing dining experience, the food was worth the price, which for montauk we found quite reasonable especially considering the quality of the food. Everyone that worked there was super friendly too. Highly recommend swallow east for a nice date or a fun dinner with a group of friends!
Very busy place even in the winter, which is saying something for montauk. We started with the warm kale salad and the mac and cheese which was phenomenal. Will definitely come back
We were Looking forward to eating at Swallow East on New Years Eve 2016. We were told 10:00 was the last seating so we made a reservation for 9:30. We ordered apps which were delicious. Then when we were ready to order our meal the waiter informed us that they were out of many items on the menu. We left not having dinner and too late to get into other restaurants in montauk.
Delicious food using fresh seasonal ingredients. Would definitely visit again!!
The tapas were delicious. A pricey meal, but worth it. The grits and shrimp was my favorite. Creamy, decadent with the right amount of spice. And the local scallops, fresh, sweet and succulent.
Food and service very good. Selection was good. Had a very enjoyable dinner and will go back.
Food was very good. Small plates. Not a very extensive menu but enough choices. Make a reservation.
Botched the bday dessert (never came), and ran out of skirt steak - there are only so many dishes on the menu! Food was fantastic, but make sure you order fast/ahead bc they take a while to come out!
Immediate attention upon walking in the door and greeted with a smile. Attentive server. Good was good but pricey.
Terrific- a hidden gem! Love the Tuna Carpaccio and Angus Sliders. People say the food is "tapas style" but the portions are really nice, and the service and ambiance are top notch. Best place to go in Montauk.
I hosted a party of 8 for dinner and couldn't have had a better experience. The food was delicious and the service was excellent. Our waitress was very knowledgeable about the menu and gave us great guidance on ordering for a large party. Everyone loved the calamari especially. Will definitely be back!
We had a great dinner outside by the boats and harbor. We went early in the week, and it was empty. I would imagine it would be hard to get an outside table during the weekend. Enjoyed out dinner
Beautiful location and delicious dinner!
I hve been to the other location many times so I knew I couldnt go wrong coming here in Montauk!! Everything was great from the lobster roll, to the fresh calms, the burger sliders and the mac and cheese!! Cant wait to go back
Extremely enjoyable Anniversary dinner!
A lovely restaurant in a perfect setting by the water. The food is fresh and the small plates makes it fun. You can try several dishes at the same time. We particularly loved the barata with it's silky smooth texture, the lamb kebabs and the sliders. The service was professional yet friendly. I love this restaurant and will keep coming back.
Our visit happened to coincide with the Montauk music festival. The food was delicious . Shrimp and Grits fit for a New Orleans native! Clams plentiful and delicious . All followed by a great band called Ladies Drink Free . Delightful exexperience !
I loved the food but I think there could be a fair amount of people who would not "get" the menu, probably older diners.
My husband and I went to Swallow East during the coldest time of the coldest day New York has seen...possibly ever. The restaurant could not keep up with the cold air, so unfortunately we had to keep our coats on. The service was pretty good, but we got the impression that our waiter was disappointed we didn't get any drinks. We didn't get any drinks because we didn't realize we'd be paying quite a bit for two fixed price meals. The food was pretty good, but not that good. It would have been nice if the website or the woman who called to confirm our reservation would have warned us that there would not be an a la carte menu. I would like to go back in nicer weather with the regular menu.
We would have had a great Valentine's dinner but the place was freezing. There was a space heater nearby set to some temperature in the 50s. I ate dinner with my coat on.
The food was great, ambiance was enjoyable. Service was a bit slow, which was surprising considering we were there in the middle of the winter and the restaurant wasn't crowded at all.
Great place if you like to share plates. Portions are perfect for getting a bunch of different things to try. A few of the appetizers seemed a bit expensive ... ($13 for 6 pieces of fried asparagus?) but overall we had a really enjoyable meal. Steak was DELICIOUS and cooked perfectly. Would probably go back, but definitely not during busy season.
Came here with the girlfriend on valentines day and we were very happy with the service and food. our waiter was attentive and made some very good recommendations. Get the Montauk Chowder, their fries aren't the best in the world though.
I loved this place. The pricing was incredibly reasonable for the quality of the food and I have to say the skirt steak may have been the best steak I've ever eaten. Great chill spot for the gang or date night
Very quiet and low key during these winter months which is nice since the place is packed in the summer. Great food. Small dishes meant to be shared. Lovely beachy decor.
What a hidden gem this restaurant is. I ordered the burrata with crispy kale and a side of roasted brussel sprouts. I would like to see the vibe at night, but I chose to go to brunch instead. I will definitely be back!
Great food and perfect atmosphere for my family. Will be back!
Our party arrived at Swallow East promptly for our 7:30 reservation. It took us almost a solid half an hour just to be seated. The host stand was swamped with one girl behind the podium. The line just to be seated was unacceptable. When the hostess did finally acknowledge us, she took the party ahead of us to their table, greeted me warmly with a smile, looked me square in the eye and politely said "I will be right back". She then disappeared for fifteen minutes and no one appeared at the host stand for a good while. The phone was ringing off the hook and no other staff member came by until after what seemed like an eternity, some sort of manager sat us. Then there was the lack of waitstaff. It seemed like there was one waiter for the entire room! Much to his credit, the waiter was very efficient with all the tables he had and took our order fast, but he was obviously swamped, which made getting water refills, condiments and our needs met much more difficult. The fact that our table of six agreed that we should ask the the back waiter to refill our empty alcohol glasses with water so we didn't have to wait for more is never a good sign. Lastly, one person in our party had to wait ten minutes for their dish to arrive while everyone else had their food on the table. Saturday night in any restaurant is busy, so I'd advise Swallow East to do what needs to be done to hire more staff. I get that Montauk in October is off season and it's probably hard to retain staff since a Hamptons business won't be as busy during the peak summer months, but the lack of bodies on staff was embarrassing not only for our table but from the belwildered looks of other patrons at other tables, was for them as well. Food was solid, and came out pretty fast and kudos to the kitchen staff for working fast and furious but the experience of not being properly waited on and seated properly canceled out whatever good there was.
