spit-roasted sea bream, red cabbage salad, Cypriot tahini sauce, fried colocasi
spit-roasted duck breast and leg rubbed with pastourmá spices, yogurt sauce, Pontian satz bread, pomegranate reduction, pickled chard, fries
I love this place, it is really incredible. And our server was fun and knowledgeable. Only knock on this one occasion was that the AC either died or couldn’t handle the humidity and it was a sauna. Regardless, highly recommend, get the whole sea bass.
Rooftop was nice and we were lucky to snag a seat overlooking the street during wicker park fest.
Food was meh- over salted octopus, lumpy overcooked kebabs. Fries that came with duck gyros were the best item. The Manhattan-ish drink was too sweet due to the cherry reduction or so were told.
And yes, there’s a mandatory 22% gratuity. For my tab of drinks, apps and entrees, gratuity was the second highest number. I am all in favor for the wait staff being tipped handsomely but I think it’s the restaurant owner’s job to provide their staff with income stability and not mine. If that means they need to raise the menu prices, do it.
Over all, nothing special.
Food was the best part, but that only gets 3 stars. Service was the worst part, too few servers meant our server vanished on us and we only saw her once again before leaving.
The experience wasn't great because when we first got there we were given a menu and were pointed to go upstairs. I don't know how other people like it but we didn't like to be handed a huge greasy menu while we hold it and walk across the whole room to find a seat for ourselves. This was the first time I encounter this kind of service. Also, we weren't told that a gratuity of 22% was added to everything. Normally this is fine and I always tip even higher but the lack of service made it an extra point of dismay. Overall it was ok and the food was good, but we are not going back, especially since it was my wife's birthday and even though we said that in our reservation it made no difference in the quality of the service or anything extra being done.
We ate on the rooftop which was nice but warm. Fans would have helped. Food and service were very good. It was crowded and a little noisy. Not ideal for a quiet business dinner.
We loved the food and the service. The wine list was very good, with wines from different regions of Greece. We sat outside. The noise level was almost intolerably high. Energetic is a gross euphemism and understatement. The ambient noise from traffic and the commuter train made everyone speak very loudly.
We will try downstairs the next time.
The menu is unique in that it represents food from different parts of Greece. Of the items we ordered the fried cauliflower, duck gyros and lamb tubers I ( we ate a similar dish while in Heraklion in Crete in 2018) were exceptional.
I love Taxim, the food is really good. I haven’t been in awhile, but I surprised to be seated upstairs and the music be really loud during my latest visit.
In prior visits, the ambience is perfect. Quiet rooftop bar with a cozy rustic aesthetic. While the visual aesthetic is the same, they for some reason had the music on really loud that evening.
The servers were kind enough to turn it down a little for us and seat us away from the speakers. But I really question what the music was adding to the atmosphere. I just did not met my expectation of my prior experience.
The food was still good, but I hope at my next visit, the vibe is a little more chill.
Great authentic greek food and wine. Felt like we were back in Greece for dinner and it was excellent!
I have been to Taxim several times and it is one of the best Greek restaurants in Chicago, but I have to say the quality of the food was worse on our mid-July visit. The baby bamies and the prassopita were very good but the cabbage dolmades were tougher and colder than usual, and the eggplant spread was old. I think they are struggling in the kitchen.
Plus we realized there was a 22% mandatory tip for our party of 2. I always tip 20% but to include such a high tip and not even tell the customer is wrong. We almost didn’t recognize it on the bill (I checked cause it was very expensive and then I saw). They also charged me $7 for a cup of coffee after the meal and I would expect better from a real Greek restaurant.
I would still say the restaurant is the best Greek food I’ve found in Chicago and their wine and ouzo selection is great. I hope these changes are a result of the Covid-19 pandemic and they will go back to their usual quality soon.
Food was delicious, service was very good, rooftop patio was very pleasant.
Food is great. Wonderful atmosphere.
Birthday dinner for my husband and son .
Overpriced, small portion, overcooked food. Service and ambiance were good.
Best way to celebrate my birthday. Food is exquisite. Our waiter was outstanding!!! Thank you
Everything was amazing. One of the few places I felt like every choice was perfect!
Absolutely delicious every single thing we tried. The fried cauliflower was killer. Great Greek beer as well!
Consistently the best Greek food in Chicago!
Our waiter was great and the food was outstanding. However, the hostess at the front of the restaurant was very rude and dismissive. She seemed annoyed when we checked in for our reservation, and when I approached her to ask a question later on she literally turned her back to me as she said “the bathrooms are that way” which was not the question I was trying to ask her. Outside of that the experience was very good.
We had a great time! Food is always delicious and staff always very kind and helpful in making recommendations
We love coming here for the octopus?
The service was excellent and bot a long wait. The lamb was fantastic!! I was so full but had to finish.
Good food, thoughtfully prepared with creativity and care. Two of us shared two small plates and two entrees. The cauliflower and capers was amazing and lamb shank was perfect. Efficient and helpful service. We sat on the roof, which was a little warm. The alternative was to have a fan blowing your hair around or deal with warm weather.
Food was amazing!
Visiting Chicago. Loved the rooftop dinning and the food! Fun atmosphere and area!
The food is excellent. We were disappointed to not be given rooftop - we were told they were "really busy up there", but that was fine. The issue is that it is extremely loud in the main dining room and they sat us in the middle, it made conversation very difficult. They also made us feel rushed. Get your food in, you have to put it in all at once, no ordering additional plates if you decide you want to try something else. I get that turnover is important, but given what we were spending it felt a little rude to be rushed.
The food was delicious and the server was attentive and very helpful in selecting wines as we were unfamiliar with the Greek varietals. I'd like to go back!
Great food, great bang for the buck, and would highly recommend to anyone!
First large co worker dinner out in over 18 months
This is a great spot for Greek food, Our server was amazing as she explained the different dishes on the menus and gave us some great recommendation.
Best Greek food in Chicago
Lamb Shank was cold, and not served as pictured on website... Not worth the money! Service was terrible and mandatory 22% tip added to check regardless of party size.
Not to clean. Glassware and Silverware stained.
Restrooms not clean. Don’t waste your time, much better Greek Restaurants in Chicagoland.
I greatly appreciate ensuring that your service staff is well compensated and taken care of. However, since the institution of the auto-gratuity, service here has really gone downhill. There is no attempt to time the food so that those at the table can dine together, the whole point of going out to dinner. I had been served everything I ordered, but waited 15 minutes for my husband's entree to arrive. He had to remind the servers that he had ordered a starter, which came AFTER his entree, and very long after my food had arrived. Taxim has been our go-to date place in the neighborhood for years. However, if this complete disregard for timing food continues, we'll probably have to find a new go-to. We love your place, so please get this service thing straightened out.
Wow. What an amazing experience. Perfect little getaway in the middle of Wicker Park. Love the outdoor rooftop seating. Wonderful ambience and lovely service. the food is out of this world. Can not wait to go back and try more! I loved the amount of options on the menu. There were a TON of vegetarian options as well, which I love!
Food was delicious as always, BUT on the roof the noise level was oppressive and unbearable. I have dined on the roof several times, and it seems to me they have put a clear plexiglass covering. Didn't it used to be just open-air?
Regardless, we arrived at about 6:45 and the music was way too loud. Then more people came and the conversation was at a roar-level. To have a conversation with a companion you had to lean close to each other across the table and yell at each other. I couldn't wait to get out of there. I wanted to go to a quieter bar afterward so my friend and I could have the conversation we could not share in the din of Taxim.
I might go back in the winter do dine inside, but I will never endure that noise on the roof again. You want an intimate dinner with conversation? Go somewhere else. You won't find it on the Taxim roof.
Limited entree choices and felt overpriced for the environment. The street outside is packed with drunk people and doesn’t feel safe. Your stopped as you enter restaurant by security guard who makes you wait on sidewalk while he confirms you have a reservation. And they require minimum 25% tip which is added automatically. It’s OK place but won’t be going back
This restaurant was lovely! Great selection of Greek wines, incredible small plates, and a cozy rooftop atmosphere. I’d definitely dine here again :)
Excellent food as always, hot and flavorful and fresh. Great rooftop vibes. But the service was pretty much absent. Bottle of wine took 20 min to arrive, and we never got a dish we ordered. Waiter maybe came by once. Too bad.
The upstairs roof dining was very nice. The server was also very helpful in suggesting both the main and the accompanying wine.
This was our third visit to Taxim, and the first time we dined inside. Eating on the rooftop transports you to another place, which doesn't quite happen in the dining room. The food, as always, was excellent. We had two types of dolmades, one shrimp and one lamb - both delicious. You cannot go wrong with lamp chops or the lamb shank. Our server was great and spot on with a wine recommendation. All three men had different desserts, chocolate halva, loukoumades (my favorite) and an ice cream. I just sipped my ouzo and watched them finish every bit. We'll be back, but on the roof.
Cute little rooftop, food was just OK for the price.
Food/experience was not what we expected. Overall, over priced food.
