This is our favorite restaurant in Rhinebeck, fashioned out of an old and charming church, featuring a lovely cavernous space for the main dining room. The food is imaginative and delicious. Try the the many interesting tapas, and for the main course order the Faroe Island salmon or lamb shanks. My husband likes the rib roast. The cocktails are superb. At holiday time, enjoy the enormous tree the put up and decorate, which will lend cheer to this dismal and discouraging 2020 holiday season. The tables area well spaced and they use UV-c lighting (the best choice) to disinfect the dining areas. We feel safe there. Go, before indoor dining is prohibited!
My party of 4 were very happy place and food, will be back soon
Very disappointed both with the food and ambiance. I was so excited to come to this restaurant and was deeply disappointed. Food was mediocre at best. Ambiance was terrible. Old curtains hanging to cover up unwanted sight lines. Kitchen door swinging open every few minutes with a direct view into the kitchen. I was expecting a high end experience, and it was really not exceptional.
This is my 2nd visit. Both times the service and food have been excellent. This time unfortunately we are dealing with covid but there was plenty of space between tables and with the high ceilings it felt safe to eat inside.
We had not been to Terrapin in years and were delighted to find the food and service to be as good as we remembered it. Delicious food and good atmosphere.
Went for appetizers and cocktails and loved everything we had. Great service!
I had signed up for the outdoor dining but ended up eating indoors. While there were heaters in the outdoor we didn't feel it was warm enough nor had the ambiance that we expected.
The indoor experience was excellent!
We all enjoyed our meals and stay at your place. If possible, my daughter and I will try to visit Terrapin again before we leave for Texas.
Great food and service! A must-stop for those visiting the area.
Went during Restaurant Week and the food didn't disappoint. This is our favorite time to visit Terrapin.
Cool atmosphere, friendly staff and great food and drinks. Would definitely recommend!
We had a great time and are amazing food! We will def. be back!!
Wonderful food and service!
We visited for dinner on a chilly fall night. We had an arugula salad we split three ways, the portion was quite generous. The ingredients were unbelievably fresh (which is their touchstone - using local suppliers) and the dressing perfect. The cheese filled wontons were so good, don't miss.... Then our entrees were total comfort food, short ribs, lamb shank and a cheese encrusted filet. We could not eat it all by any means, but tried! And then were too full to try any dessert. The wine list was adequate, nothing too exciting but what we had was very good. All food brought at nice intervals, hot and mouth watering. The building looks like an old Nordic church (maybe it was) and quite interesting. We would definitely recommend!
We visited Rhinebeck for our one year wedding anniversary and were super excited to dine at Terrapin! Overall, our experience was wonderful. Helpful and knowledgeable staff. Our cocktails were fantastic and they have a lovely wine selection. The food was delicious, with only two comments, but might be a personal preference! The tapas/appetizers are all a bit more fried than we anticipated (primarily the crispy artichokes, typically these are pan fried v flash fried & battered). Both of the quesidillas and the calamari were stand out appetizers! My mushroom soup was also fantastic. We ordered scallops to share, a newer menu item for the season. The dish was beautiful and well rounded, but felt our scallops were a bit over salty. We did end the evening with a delicious ice cream sandwich! I would certainly recommend this to anyone in town.
The food was clearly made from quality ingredients and very well-prepared. I had the swordfish special. The fish was very fresh, a nice size portion and delicious! Many restaurants tend to overcook fish so I was very happy. Excellent service. Lovely ambience. Only drawback was a somewhat pricey wine list. Would be nice to see a few bottles in the $40 range.
We enjoyed a delicious dinner at Terrapin on our trip to Rhinebeck. Due to COVID, we dined in the outside heated tent which felt remarkedly warm due to their outstanding set-up. It was safe, clean, and well socially distanced. The service was outstanding and the food tasted great. Thank you!
Love Terrapin- food is always delicious - service is excellent - especially Carlos and Djan! Our favorite restaurant - and nachos are always amazing.
The food was excellent & the staff was wonderful! It was a perfect place to celebrate for our anniversary.
Our waiter was knowledgeable accommodating. All of us were very happy with everything. Thank you.
Wonderful food and great social distancing. Couldn't have been happier!
Beautiful restaurant with exceptional service and outstanding food! Highly recommend for anyone in the Rhinebeck area
So good we went two nights in a row. Our waiter was awesome and justina at the bar was fantastic !
It was great - good selection of beer and cocktails and food was very well prepared. Service was great. Fun place
It was my birthday, we were disappointed with the ambiance which was lacking, the food was marginal. Our server was professional but not real attentive. For the price of the food we had higher expectations!
The service, food and atmosphere were superb! Would definitely make it a go to spot.
Delicious quality food, great ambiance, and pleasant service. Terrapin is always an excellent choice!
We understood that there was some problem with overbooking and we were not able to go to our table and were made to wait nearly 30 minutes past our reservation time. The staff were very kind and offered us free drinks, but still.....it was a long time to stand in the vestibule trying to socially avoid the steady stream of others people.
The food is generally good although our “rare” tuna was actually cold inside, not rare but uncooked altogether. The restaurant is vastly overheated so wear your summer clothing, regardless of the outside weather.
I would recommend this restaurant but be aware that the management does not go smoothly, either in the kitchen or front of house.
Amazing food as usual and the space is beautiful
Great food and service. Would definitely return.
Food was good. Hanger teak was a little dry for medium rare.
We have been coming here for years. The food and service is always great!
Delicious food as always! Fresh and delicious farm to table menu with layered seasoning & sauces. Many choices including vegetarian and gluten free. We have dined at Terrapin for special occasions and this most recent visit was for our anniversary. Service was excellent and dining outdoors on a chilly night was still wonderful as the front of the restaurant outdoor tables all had individual heat lamps overhead. There was an additional heated tent in the back lot of the restaurant if that kind of seating is preferred.
As always we had a great dinner at Terrapin. Service and food were perfect and all social distancing rules were being followed inside. Look forward to our next visit soon.
A great dining experience. Service was excellent and all staff and our server were very knowledgeable.
Drinks were made well and came out quickly.
The dishes were all prepared and presented well. We had the Shisito Peppers, Ahi Tuna Salad and the Cripsy Artichokes.
For dinner we had the Salmon, the Pumpkin Ravioli and the Venison Bolognese. Salmon was the perfect temperature and the pasta dishes were cooked al dente and were full of flavor.
We had the Seasonal Fruit Crisp and the Vanilla Bean Creme Brulee for dessert. Yummy.
I would recommend all of the above dishes.
We were not rushed. We ate indoors and were seated and more than 6 feet away from other diners.
Food was horrible and we sat in the road on a crooked table with a jersey barrier and falling down trellis next to us. The waitress tried hard but even she seemed a little embarrassed. I would be forgiving because of Covid about the rest; however the food was worse than a TGI Friday's.
I ordered the Hangar Steak, it was average. Not bad, but I wouldn't say it was anything special. That alone made the $31 price tag excessive. My husband had the rigatoni. The pasta was not cooked. (I'm Italian, it was not al dente, it wasn't cooked). At $26 for a plate of undercooked rigatoni the whole experience was a disappointment. I've lived in the area for about 20 years and we've never eaten here. This will probably be the last time. I do not mind spending a little more for a good meal, but I wouldn't even say this was even good, it was lackluster and meh. The atmosphere didn't do anything to contribute. Quiet and depressing. Service was prompt, but lacked any character. From beginning to end the entire experience was bland and unremarkable.
Superb short ribs! Love the ambiance. Perfect location.
Great place. Well worth the trip to Rhinebeck. The mussels were incredible.
This is truly a destination restaurant. The chef is creative without being pretentious. The outdoor arrangements post Covid are a bit ad hoc, but we are more than happy to put up with some makeshift tables when the quality of cooking is this high. Many kitchens give lip service to the farm to table movement, Here they really do work with local providers to insure extremely fresh and vivid components transform the dishes into memorable and distinctive renditions. The outdoor environment is rather casual, more casual than we would prefer. Still, the wide range of options and excellent execution will bring us back even though we are some 2 hours away.
