The Black Swan Ockham
The meal was good, but over priced for what is just decent pub food. The member of staff on the door was slow/clunky/not welcoming, and the waitress that served us not at all good - 2 or 3 attempts to up sell, a running commentary at our every order, and finally mentioning that the 12.5% service charge was needed by her to top up her wages. We paid it, but I don't want to hear that. In addition to the "discretionary" of 12.5% service charge a small "optional" charitable donation was added. People need to pay their staff a sensible salary, let guests make the choice on service fee without suggesting what they feel is "appropriate", and waitresses should greet, explain the menu/specials, be attentive, but not intrusive, and definitely not add a running commentary about "great choice", "I like that", "would you like rose instead of brut", "would you likes a side of..." etc. etc. Just very irritating. Pub restaurant owners should make charitable donations from their own pockets rather than expecting guests to sign up to the pub's charity of choice !
After we were sat at table - we waited 25 minutes and then we sought waitress to take order!! Our first choice of the pie - we was told not ready and to order something different!! And it was at least 45 minutes until we had our meal. Once again at end of meal we had to seek waitress to get the bill.
Food very average given price. Polite engaging staff but really slow service.
Unfortunately despite booking we had to wait 20 minutes for a table. TheN unfortunately the food took a really long time to arrive. Once it did one main along with all of the sides were served but we had to wait 15 minutes for the remaining mains. All in all the service was a bit of a disaster and the dinner less enjoyable as a result. Our booking was at 5.15 and the restaurant reasonably quiet for most of the service. We got a big sorry for our troubles but nothing else.
Amazing Sunday roast dinner & was very pleased by the service & cleanliness of the pub. The place is stunning & feels like your miles from it all which is just what’s needed right now.
Had a fantastic meal at the Black Swan. The staff were really great - superb service by charming and attentive waitress called Jo. We were really made to feel at home and comfortable in what are very trying circumstances for hospitality at the moment. Everyone at the table was really pleased with their food (which is unusual) and the choice of wines by the glass is brilliant. Also wonderful to be able to get Champagne by the glass rather than just prosecco. We don't live nearby but will make an effort to go again because it was worth it.
Dear Guest, thank you for such a wonderful review! I have passed your feedback on to Jo and the rest of our team! We hope to see you soon again!
Enjoyed the Sunday roast, with starters and a very good cheesecake dessert. Decent kids choices and a well poured pint of Landlord. Service attentive but lot overbearing.
Dear Guest, thank you for taking the time to leave us 5 star review! We hope to see you soon!
Most enjoyable lunch in pleasant surroundings and good distancing. The fresh fish was cooked perfectly all leading to. A good Saturday and agreement to return
I ordered the egg, avocado on sourdough from the lunch menu. It was very tasty but rather small for its £9 price tag. 2 eggs and a few slices of avocado on only one thin piece of toast. Was still hungry.
Really great pub with friendly service, good food, nice decor and ambience. We enjoyed a lovely birthday lunch here and will be back again soon.
Nice atmosphere and decor, close to a nice walk. Pub was quite busy when we went but COVID safety measures were in place. Food was very average especially onion soup But bill was still very high. Service was good though.
We had a wonderful meal, made all the better by the attentive staff. Nothing was a problem and they went out of their way to look after us. The food was absolutely delicious and we'll definitely be coming back!
Dear Holly, thank you so much for your kind words! Have a great weekend!
Lovely meal with friends. The children liked the lanterns, the service was great and the food was really good.
Lovely cosy pub with great staff and food. Log burner is especially welcoming.
Dear Rachel, thank you for your lovely comments! We hope to see you in the nearest future!
Best local pub food experienced since lockdown. Great menu, well cooked; plus friendly, prompt service
Lovely meal but main took a long while to come- unusual as we have eaten here twice before.
My first visit but I will return. Very warm welcome and friendly staff.
Another excellent Black Swan meal. Pity we had to eat outside. Excellent nonetheless.
Dear Andrew, thank you for taking the time to leave us such a great review! We hope to see you soon again!
Michael (Mikel) was lovely and very attentive, great service and great food and cocktails.
Simply very good. Great fish and chips served by polite, friendly staff. Proper Covid caution too. Thank you Black Swan.
Due to the fact that’s this pub is in Tiers 2. The staffs did everything to look after us , we had to sit outside due to two bubbles ! Great food
We were all asked to give our phone details not to the NHS app but for the restaurants own database. Only then were we allowed to be seated outdoors. I had requested a table on the verandah but was shown a very windy table. We eventually were given a table on the sunny side out of the wind. We were handed incorrect menus from their Sunday lunch as well as their lunch menus. Once ordered the food came quickly (hardly anyone there) and was good.
The service charge of 12.5% was a bit steep given our experience. It’s just a pub!!!
Doubt we will return even though we are fairly local. It’s just a money-making machine.
Unusual circumstances as start of level 2 lock down
Fantastic personal service! Food was delicious. Although we could do with a view more options on the children’s menu, please.
Food and service was absolutely brilliant. Best Sunday roast I’ve had out in a long time.
Very friendly and helpful staff. Was busy but all safety precautions in place and tables were placed well apart.
Food was tasty and well cooked using fresh ingredients but was disappointed at menu choice. I'm allergic to shellfish/crustaceans and don't eat red meat. I have also recently discovered an intolerance to gluten that is health-related so need to avoid wheat products.
Basically there was only 1 menu item I could have: roast chicken - and that was without the Yorkshire pudding and stuffing. The majority of side items (that I didn't already have as part of my meal) contained gluten and the only dessert option was ice-cream. If I was vegetarian and gluten-free then I wouldn't have been able to eat anything.
So ... lovely pub but won't be going back for a meal until they expand their menu a bit more.
Excellent food and service if a little pricey.
Surprising good meal - excellent soft shell crab and unusually good rib-eye steak. Excellent and friendly service
Not quite as special as we remembered but still a good meal out. Soggy burger bun replaced with no question. Mayonnaise was not good - straight out of cash and carry jar! But these were small details. Service was very diligent and timely. We will go back for sure.
Great food and wonderful service from our waitress, Joanne.
We'll definitely be going back.
Lovely countryside pub with great local walks. Had the fish and chips, and it was delicious, as well as the cheesecake for dessert which was as delightful. The ambience is very chilled and welcoming and the decor is beautiful
Lovely setting and great food
I just want to say that your staff were excellent. In these difficult times we received excellent, courteous, friendly and attentive attention!!!
We felt safe too.
We enjoyed a lovely lunchtime meal outside. All the staff we engaged with were friendly & helpful. Lovely environment too. Will be returning soon.
A large pub with good parking facilities. The service was excellent and the food was lovely. I would certainly visit again. We were seated inside near the bar, however there is plenty of both indoor and outdoor seating.
Lovely dinner and drinks with friends. We had the Chicken, ham and leek pie which was a good size and very tasty.
The food wasn’t great but not awful in the summer we had wonderful delicious food and felt great value not so this time
A reliable favourite, great menu, good size portions - very helpful staff.
Slow to serve and couldn't find someone to give us the bill.....staff busy chatting.
Came for a birthday meal but very disappointing and can’t help but feel this restaurant has lost its way from a food, ambience and service perspective. The Sunday menu selection was really poor. Starters seemed to be from a completely different menu theme (soft shell crab with kimchi and avocado) compared to mains (standard roasts, burger or fish and chips). The roasts were ok albeit that the Yorkshire’s were dry and had been kept warm for hours and the presentation was poor, burger also ok but patty’s were dry. Fish however was good - a well sized portion and seemingly freshish still. However the thing that massively ruined the experience was the smell inside the restaurant. Something was wrong with the drains in the toilets and the smell inside the restaurant was appalling. They’d left the doors open to try and get rid of it but it was too cold so they were forced to close them. But no apology or mention from the volumes of waiting staff who were sitting around chatting or playing jousting games with cardboard tubes. Just a casual mention at the end of ‘oh yes there’s a problem with the drains’ as we left. In all honesty the restaurant should not have been open with a problem like that.
