The Freemasons at Wiswell
Roast Rump, Spiced Kofta and Crispy Belly, BBQ Gem Lettuce, Miso Aubergine, Mint and Yoghurt
Summer Vegetable and Pearl Barley, Aged Parmesan
Poached in Pedro Ximenez Caramel, Raspberry Sorbet
The food as usual was great but the service wasn’t: no champagne glasses; no red wine glasses, both because they were busy. Only one desert menu for a table of 4, and the waitress said we would need to share and then took her 30 mins to come back and take the order so we didn’t bother ordering anything in the end!
Fantastic meal. I had been looking forward to visiting Freemasons for some time and it did not disappoint. If there is a criticism, it really isn't meant as one, but the staff were a little slow, but maybe this is due to the current climate. It wouldn't stop me coming again and they were very friendly in any event.
Excellent meal. Service very good too. Would highly recommend
Food was great and service good. The pub was welcoming and friendly. We'll be back. Hopefully the virus that appears to be descending on to us doesn't last too long and that the place is busy again soon, as it did seem that people are starting to stay away. Fingers crossed for the entire hospitality industry over the coming weeks.
A very enjoyable meal again. Food excellent.
The food was absolutely delicious we chose from the two course lunch menu. The staff were extremely professional . Limited parking so would have to park on the road. I will definitely be back very soon . Highly recommend.
We had a lovely meal on Saturday, would definitely be back.
Food was delicious staff friendly and service was excellent
Excellent food, very attentive staff, great music
Delicious food at a very reasonable price for a three course lunch.
Fantastic meal the food was delicious and nicely timed!
Food was outstanding good, service was good but for the price small things could be improved - drinks arrived after the starter was finished, wine wasnt poured and had to ask for dessert menus. We would of had coffees we weren't asked.
Excellent as always! Stunning food, beautifully presented, smiley service and a beautiful setting. Highly recommend.
Another super meal at the Freemasons. Quiet lunch - perfect for catching up with friends. Staff extremely nice and helpful.
First time, and rebooked again. Was very impressed. Only negative was that serviced slipped from collecting the finished mains to leaving.
Booked in for the Sunday 3 course menu priced at £37.50 for 3pm sitting. Contacted them 4 days before to inform them I had allergy and intolerance to dairy and informed 'no problem we'll work around it'.
Arrived at 2.40pm and immediately shown to table and given menus. Waiter was aware I had an allergy and informed me that the only starter I could have was the salmon but that was at an extra cost of £5.95. Told mains should be ok.
So, ordered starters and mains although not happy with additional costs.
Starters and mains came and went with no problem and service good but then following the table being cleared it felt as though we'd been forgotten about.
The table we had was upstairs and not all tables were full but 25 minutes after the table had being cleared I had to get the attention of a member of staff and ask for the sweet menu.
Although staff were up and down the stairs and our glasses remained empty our presnce there appeared insignificant.
We were then given menus, I told the staff member of my allergy and was told he'd see what they could do. 20 minutes later I was presented with a 'tropical fruit salad' with 2 scoops of ice cream on top! Absolutely laughable.
It wasn't just the poor service that put a sour note on our visit but our table was opposite the Portrait room and next to Gun room which wasn't an issue but the toilets are just up the stairs from behind our table, but as there are no signs indicating their location of the toilets, for the 2 hours 20 minutes we were we constantly asked 'do you know where the toilets are?'
Had trouble finding somewhere to park the car as there isn't much space near too the restaurant. The place itself is very charming with stuffed animals and old photos on the walls. After being seated we did have to wait over half an hour to have our meals ordered. Food was excellent as expected and we did enjoy the evening.
We went to celebrate our wedding anniversary, it was a busy service, which unfortunately the staff could not cope with the volume of tables, we waited an hour exactly between main course and dessert coming, which we later did not have to pay for as I could not eat the dessert as I had gone far too long between courses, we also waiting approx 20-30 min for drinks orders to be refilled, apologise’s were made by the staff, but this again when your in such a lovely restaurant should not be happening!
We have been eating at freemason's for 10+years. Nice food, nice place, a bit pricey.
Unfortunately didnt enjoy the suckling pig dish I had on this visit. There were too many stong flavours on the plate that didnt compliment each other and only 2 small mouthfuls of the belly pork itself.
On this evening they were also very busy and seemed understaffed . With a waitress apologising for how long it took them to clear our table.
Very special. Lovely choices. Beer was good. The wine was excellent.
For the first time, we did not enjoy a meal at Wiswell. Service was slower than usual and m wife’s steak and lemon meringue were fine. Everything else was over elaborate and rather nasty.
Sadly, a big difference since our last visit, however, both starters were excellent (mushroom soup with hot dog and oxtail- lovely flavours) Fish of the day was monkfish with leek and shrimps - the plate was barely warm and the fish had a slight metallic taste, was tougher than expected and was tepid, as was the sauce. I opted not to comment at the time, although mentioned it on leaving in the hope that Chef would be advised. (Unfortunately I had misheard the waiter re cost of fish and heard it as £18. I was astonished to read the bill as it was £30) My husband enjoyed the sucking pig. The dessert of Maltesers, Horlicks and ice cream was ok. Staff were pleasant. Canned music early on was rather loud, as was the Hooray Henry at a table close by! Overall, we were disappointed and won’t be rushing back.
My go to place for amazing food and service. Fast , efficient service , gorgeous selection on menu and every dish on point.
Lovely food but so heavy on the sauces and purees which were intense in flavour that the flavour of the meat in the lamb kebab and pork belly was absolutely lost. Couldn't even say enhanced. Shame really. We missed ordering sides which was a mistake but wish they had prompted us and we would. Expensive meal which was hard to justify. Best parts were the bread and the croquettes. Puddings looked delicious but didnt personally have one.
A very agreeable experience but sadly very few customers at lunchtime to appreciate the skills of the Chef which are high end to say the least.
Mid week lunch, only two other couples dining so very quiet. drinks at the bar very expensive. would have been more atmospheric had one of the open fires been lit. The food was excellent but very overpriced, I can understand why it was quiet not many people would return at those prices
Fantastic food and drinks great service
Excellent service and food, always a pleasure
Always enjoy dining at The Freemasons, had the cod and, just in my opinion, I thought there was too much purée and sauce on the plate. The mushroom soup could have been warmer was just lukewarm, don’t know if that’s the way it was supposed to be, but for me not warm enough.
Having visited the Freemasons Arms a few times in the past I was very pleased, although not surprised, to experience the same levels of excellence as previously.
Steve Smith and his team are consistently producing a level of quality that remains at an outstanding level.
Excellent food and service . Pleasant , attentive and friendly staff.
Why this place doesn’t have a Michelin Star I have no idea. It is far superior to some that have - the food is excellent, the wine list very good and the staff always pleasant & efficient. Add to that that they always serve a decent beer too - what more can you ask for?? Outstanding!
The room was a little chilly but overall very good. We will be coming back.
Absolutely fab food presentation and quality made an everyday lunch with a friend extra special highly recommend it!
Great food and fantastic service. Kija was very attentive and professional. The roasted cod was delicious and my husband said the beef was fantastic. The ambience was very good. The place is a little rustic but this makes it a relaxing venue. I will look forward to my next visit.
Beautiful meal in a beautiful setting. We went off the set lunch menu had 2 courses for £20 each which I thought was great value.
We’ve been before and we’ll be back again 😊
A beautiful lunch from the a la carte menu; presse of pork with exotic salad and piquant dressing and gorgeous wild mushroom soup to start, followed by delicious pink duck breast in a Chinese-themed sauce and miniature spring roll. Superbly presented food cooked spot perfection. Our new favourite place to dine.
Amazing food as usual. Always up to standard. Would highly recommend this restaurant which is located in an idyllic village location.
This is our 3rd visit, decided on the taster menu with the menu journey, it really was exceptional. What we love about the Freemasons is the excellent quality of food but the relaxed atmosphere. If you love good food and wine, book yourself a table, you will not be disappointed.
Excellent fine dining set in a cosy country pub. And dog friendly!
