The Glunz Tavern
Love the Sunday Night Series dinners with 1/2 off bottles of wine; good adult beverage selection, exceptional service
Food was not great. Service was good and the drinks were well made.
Historic tavern vibe...inside or outside seating...friendly staff...delicious burgers! It can get a bit crowded and noisy on the weekends, but go anyway!!!
Since we live in the neighborhood, we have tried going to Glunz several times over the years in the hopes that it will improve. Sadly it seems to have declined further. Service was odd and inconsistent. Food was bland. It looks dirty and needs some kind of update. Sadly we won't be going back.
Took 30 minutes before our order was taken, then some dishes were not available. Alternative order was placed. An hour after we arrived the first dishes arrived, but the alternative order placed 30 minutes prior was not available either. My first visit and I will never return.
Very fun atmosphere/bar vibe , good food and service
I was very disappointed with this restaurant. We had reservations but when we arrived they said they don’t take reservations??? The food was greasy and over cooked. We had the deviled eggs, they were rubbery and served after the entree. The potato pancakes were so greasy they were inedible. The Wiener schnitzel was tough and greasy, the one good dish was the sausage with sauerkraut.
We arrived early in the evening and were ordered the Wienerschnitzel, but were told over 30 minutes later that they ran out and we had to reorder. We reordered and by the time we received our food, we had been waiting over 2 hours even though the restaurant was nearly empty. The brats we ordered in place of the schnitzel were not good either; We were very frustrated by the quality of the food and the overall experience.
Took an hour for us to place our order. Would not recommend this place.
Just fun!!!! A German bier haus worth a visit. Really enjoyed the sausages.
I don’t know if they were short staffed. The waiter did the best he could. The food took forever and it wasn’t right.
Service was slow, but nice staff. Food was not great, and at times cold. Maybe only stop here for a cold beer.
This is a great, old school Chicago place that I never knew existed - although the liquor store next door is legendary. It's small and intimate with knowledgeable staff. Service is a little slow, but you're having such a good time, you really don't care!
A great experience overall and reasonably priced. It was relaxing and cozy, and the waitress was very patient and friendly. They helped us select an excellent bottle of wine which was half price for V day. Their spaetzle and coq au riesling was excellent. The bread pudding was not my favorite (too firm) but it was a happy tradeoff for their excellent french onion soup. Thanks for a great experience, we will be back.
relaxed, good neighborhood local vibe, great wine list
Hamburger was pretty bad.
Flat bread was ok.
Oh they burned my burger and the bun.....and my wife's. All I had in my mouth was char. It was rather small compared to my impression after viewing photos online. Plus, horrible selection of German bears. Otherwise, staff was friendly and accommodating. Wont go back.
wiener schnitzel was better than what I had in Frankfurt. Good draft beer selection at reasonable price. Nice classic / historic look interior. Definitely will go back.
Great food, service, and ambience in the neighborhood, German orientation.
When we arrived at the restaurant it was booked for 1 company. We could not get in! The owner said she tried to call us but we never received a call or an email. She was forgotten to block the date in the open table reservation system. We walked for 40 minutes to arrive at the restaurant. The owner was so kind to give us a voucher of 50 dollar but the next day our trip ended so we could not come back. We tried to find another restaurant in the neighbourhood but these were all fully booked. Not a nice experiene with this restaurant! We ended eating a hamburger at a very noisy establishment.
I thought the service on my recent trip there was somewhat slow. My food was good and I love the atmosphere
The food we ordered was pretty authentic German fare. It was pretty good but nothing extraordinary. The menu seemed a little all over the place. I didn’t get a clear picture of the type of food the served. The menu was also small so not a great selection. They were out of potato pancakes and one other item. It seemed pretty basic to have available.
Came here with my cousins on a Wednesday night and sat at the bar. The bartender explained the different wines and suggested great ones to pair with our appetizers and dinner. Will definitely come back!
Thanks a lot for the special treatment. We didn't expect to get the private room and we thank you. Def will come back and recommend.
This review is almost a year overdue, however our visit to The Glunz was so fantastic that I can remember almost everything about it. The location in Old Town is great, and the character and history of the building is very charming. The atmosphere is comfortable. The service was outstanding. I think our waiter was named Christopher? He was great at helping us choose from a large selection of snacks and small plates to share, as well as describing the beers on tap. The most memorable food items included the giant warm pretzel, the cheese stuffed brats, the deviled eggs and the chicken liver pate. The pretzel was the best I've had outside of Germany. Turns out they're imported. Christopher was right: the beer cheese sauce with the pretzel is a must. Everything was delicious and the pricing was very reasonable. We'd recommend The Glunz to anyone looking for great comfort food and tasty beer in a relaxing atmosphere. I think they also have a well stocked bar, however we stayed with beer on this visit.
Old neighborhood establishment - wine shop connected - good beer list and good food!
There was an event going on and it was great to see it was packed.
Glad we reserved the last two seater on opentable. Service was great even though it was waitresses first day training and it was busy.
Food was great and plentiful!
Everything was fantastic! Best Bloody Mary and wine list in the city!
I children friendly pub setting with reasonable German style menu and a very good beer and wine listing. Helpful for visiting grandparents in the neighborhood.
Extremely noisy. My salmon/lentils/dill sauce was very good. My husbands corned beef with cabbage, onions, mashed potatoes had NO cabbage and no onions, but a couple of carrots.
The noise level was unacceptable. the wine for 48$ was available at the wine store for 16.99$. Quite a mark-up!
We won't return.
excellent food, great whisky selection. Service was in point and attentive.
It's a beautiful bar with great drinks. Just wouldn't recommend the food despite EXCELLENT service.
Food was good, but the cloth napkins need replacing. We were all covered with white lint!
Salmon cooked to perfection!
First time here. It was quite empty for prime time brunch on Sunday. I had the corned beef hash which was so good. It was also a great price at $10. The corned beef was so tender. Overall great place. I’d like to come back for dinner and try the schnitzel however the batter is made with cheese and I can’t eat dairy so that’s a little frustrating (first schnitzel I’ve seen that has cheese) I would definitely come back here.
Old fashioned tavern atmosphere. Our first beer and wine selections were unavailable. Wait staff seemed to be tripping over one another, awkward. Food was average. Wouldn't go back.
Great food and great service! They went out of their way to make our birthday celebration very special!! Highly recommend
Fantastic food! Authentic German fare. Nice cocktail menu .. I especially liked the applewood-smoked Manhattan. Great environment, reminiscent of a German beer hall.
The only low point was the service. Our server didn't seem to know the menu at all, and didn't seem to speak English particularly well (and didn't speak German either). We had to order by pointing to things on the menu. Our cocktails came up quickly, but we then a 20 minute wait for two of our dining companions to get their beers, with no explanation for the delay.
The bartender, on the other hand, was very professional, personable, and friendly.
