The White Hart
A lovely venue: spacious and inviting. The staff are a huge asset being friendly and efficient and giving the impression that nothing is too much trouble. The food we found excellent, my cottage pie being perfect. Altogether an excellent experience.
Great cooked food completely from the start. Expect to wait for it though all organic. A one off.
Hugely disappointing on many levels. Poor service. Food very disappointing.
Fantastic food, in a beautiful building. I preferred the dining room how it used to be if I’m honest (without the neon-lit bar) because some of its historical features are now hidden, but it’s still a gorgeous place. We’ll definitely be back!
It would be nice if there was some background music whilst you are in the restaurant. Would also be good if you were told of any special offers. We ate on a Friday and did not realise until after ordering that you could purchase fish & chips for 2 at £20 and told what the steak of the day and pie of the day is when you are given a menu. The convenience of the White Hart is why we booked a table and the pie and fish & chips was tasty and cooked well. Just needs a bit of tweeking and maybe a few comfortable arm chairs to retire to after your meal.
Have had lunch here many times. Always good food and a reasonable price and always great service. Thank you White Hart.
Home Made and cooked
We had a Steak pie all the shortcrust pastry was made homemade, meat and veg cooked exactly right! very professionally cooked meal and desserts. We both thought it was wonderful. Staff were very attentive.
Carefully served meals in a relaxing setting. Attentive waiters and excellent meals
the ambience of the old building is it's main attraction and being close to the barn cinema, etc. the service is slow and lacking in attention. food was adequate but some vegetables underdone, and overall rather overpriced for what you get.
Good service and food but slightly spoiled by a rather enthusiastic, largish group at a nearby table
Very good roast. Fantastic service by a young man who had only been there a month but for whom nothing was too much trouble. But chilly but it was a terrible day - strong winds and rain.
Overcooked beef, no crackling with pork, undercooked cauliflower, no ambience, poor experience.
Great food although at 7.45 pm several items unavailable. Drinks took ages and then arrived with the food.Felt they were understaffed.
Locally sourced & interesting menu. Helpful staff. Pleasant surroundings. Maybe a little pricey for a spontaneous meal out?
Good food and friendly service with no rush and good wine
The food was good but not outstanding. The service was very good and the surroundings were pleasant. The website offered discounts of 20% which we were not offered. The system seems very complex.
First visit - organised before cinema on Tuesday evening.
Service began as it continued - slow and uninspiring/un welcoming, very poor menu knowledge by waitress who served us and despite asking never really got the answers.
Food, when it arrived was surprisingly good - eg pie of day. Beers on menu did not match what was available.
Recommend you take service much more seriously to compliment the quality of the food. Until then, I would hesitate to recommend to friends.
The food was really good but the service was poor. They advertised 20% off Sunday lunch in January and we thought we would give it another go as used to be so poor service wise. I booked on the sit and we enjoyed the food. When came to pay it was full price and I reminded them that it should b20% off. They then tried to tell me that because I didn’t tell them when I came in, I couldn’t have it. Got the manager who seemed embarrassed as she to,d me we had to state we want this when we arrive. Showed her the website and she apologised and took the discount off. We just thought real shame they are not customer focused and not honest but the food was good.
With the caveat that you reserve a table and when making the booking you should make a request for a table away from the door!
We have been going to The White Heart for many years and never have we had such poor food the point you could not eat it. Although the waiting staff still good it was very very disappointing to say the least.
Unfortunately we had our meal on day one of a new menu. The waitress could not answer a question about dish content (but did offer to find out). The veg curry arrived Luke warm so had to be sent back, eventually our excellent young waiter managed to find some lime pickle to go with it but this should be offered without asking. The fish pie was ok but nothing special for the price. On paying we were not asked how the meal was but, when prompted £5 was deducted for the disappointing curry. We have had some lovely meals at the White hart before and believed the price was set well for the quality, on this visit we felt let down. We would be reluctant to come again in the future.
Really enjoyed Sunday Lunch at the White Hart. Beef excellent and vegetarian main very tasty. Not easy to sit opposite the door....draughty. The fire was however gorgeous and the cat delightful.
Food was super. The arancini particularly tasty.
We were headed to the Barn Cinema after and were pleased to be able to have time to fit in a delicious pannacotta to end with.
Cold and drafty atmosphere, burnt chips and undercooked broccoli, boring menu choice, slow service, dreadful experience, will not return. Such a shame - this pub should be a destination experience that helps to save and serve the gorgeous Dartington Estate.
Our Sunday roast turkey was really excellent and easily equalled our other local favourites. We will certainly be returning, and recommending to our friends.
A very disappointing experience. This was a meal that was overpriced and under- delivered. Seasonal choices are generally great but the range was extremely limited and the only vegetarian dish was boulangerie potatoes- might have been good as a side dish but £15.95?! I had the steak which was good but served on a piece of rock hard toasted bread and not interesting enough to warrant the £23.50 price tag. My partner had fish which was under-seasoned. Our veggie friend ordered two starters- the arancini was good but the soup was under-seasoned and dull. I was really looking forward to eating here but would not go back or recommend.
Buildings and grounds beautiful of course ... welcoming pub and inviting menu, but food was very disappointing and didn’t taste great.
Food was excellent, as always. Service is always friendly but can be a bit haphazard. The location is fantastic. Overall, a great place to go.
Great venue with fabulous food service was excellent very friendly.
The food and service were excellent.
I really enjoyed the environment of the White Hart, the décor was plain and understated, reflecting the style of the building itself.
Visited the White Hart for a Sunday Roast as had previously visited at Christmas time and always had an excellent meal. Sadly the Sunday Roast - we had the slow cooked beef- was dreadful. The vegetables were ok however the one piece of thinly sliced beef was awful - my companion likened it to a piece of rag! The beef was stringy and generally dreadful. We had to ask for more gravy and that was like a jug of brown hot water. Our waitress did ask if the meal was ok and we did point out the meat was a disgrace to which she didn’t seem to know what to say other than she would pass the comments on. I think there are far better venues for Sunday lunch around and would definitely avoid the White Hart. Appalling quality and not worth the money. All in all very disappointing
Really wanted it to be better than it has in the past, but STILL no atmosphere - Please put some background music on..... it's a really odd atmosphere otherwise! We felt we were making too much noise with our 6 year old... The service was patchy. One FOH team member was great - friendly, smiley. Another one, was not so good - shoddily dressed, no charisma or customer service whatsoever...
The food was ok but overpriced. The tiny serving of roast vegetables that came with the roast dinner was disappointing - one parsnip and four carrots to share between 3 people!
It could be so much better......
Had dinner on our first night. Starter ok, husband 's steak was awful, strange texture and lacked any flavour. I had risotto which was fine. Breakfast was very disappointing. I don't mind self service, but at least make sure that everything is kept hot! Everything was luke warm, and this morning noticed that the lamp over the beans was not working! Very disappointing, breakfast should be the meal that sets you up for the day, but not here. Would not recommend to anyone.
Great evening meal before cinema viewing next door
Wonderful setting with great ambience
Staff most helpful and accommodating
Toilets upstairs- not sure if there is a lift - could be a problem if mobility limited
Great venue, lovely food, prompt professional service. Definitely recommend this venue especially before going to see a film, makes it a brilliant evening out.
This is an ideal restaurant if you’re staying at Dartington Hall, however, I would not recommend going here for dinner.
Staff were taking drinks and food to wrong table, then trying next table which was also wrong. Tables all round us were complaining about food, length of wait or lack of basic tap water they had waited 15 minutes or more. My husbands steak was worse he’s ever had and despite raising issue with staff they were not interested. I requested a starter in a bigger size and was that wasn’t possible.
Drinks were extremely slow & we wasn’t offered water.
The bill was £62 for 2 of us which was really bad value for the quality / quantity of good along with poor service.
Unfortunately as it’s located in Dartington Hall it appears to be fully booked every night, despite below average food. It seems such a shame as all the cafes in the estate are lovely.
I recommend a short drive to Cott Inn for much superior food/service.
We were looking forward to a nice meal with friends. However the food took over an hour to arrive. No one checked on us in the mean time. I had to go get the waitress. The portions were very small for the money. There was no one there to clear our plates and ask if we wanted coffees or desserts. All in all a very poor experience. We will not be returning.
Had long wait for food which we had to rush as had a film starting. Soup was very average & had to ask for bread. Main was ok but small portions. My desert was sticky toffee pudding & was unexpectedly cold. I'd had enough by then & returned it. When I went to pay (I had to find a waitress as we were out of time) I made the point about delays & was given sympathy but nothing else. Overall disappointed. Won't be returning.
A nice place to enjoy a Sunday roast but I wouldn’t go out of my way to eat there
We were disappointed to find the main courses didn t include a potato and vegetable portion. By adding these on as an extra put the price into the expensive bracket ! All the steak came with was a few onion rings !!!! That isn’t acceptable
