Troll's at Horseshoe Bay
Noise level - had a baby next to us. Not really a problem - cute baby, just the odd outburst.
Super busy when we were there. I started to notice that people who came after us were eating when we had no food. Watched the waiter see me looking around and he rushed into the back. Shortly after they came to tell us our food would be right out. I’m guessing they just took someone else’s order as the salad/fries were all wrong. They did correct it but pretty poor. Also could not get a second glass of water until we asked for the third time.
Took my mother in law for her favourite, fish and chips, but very disappointed the fish was exceptionally greasy. Took several napkins to soak the grease off the fish and my plate was full if it. French fries were not hot and fresh either.
Tasty fish and chips with a lovely view and great portions for the price. The service was friendly and attentive.
A great view from our table, extensive menu and excellent service. Our group of three all ordered the shrimp sandwich and agreed it was a great choice. One of the group ordered the chocolate cake for dessert and I had a taste (not usually a lover of chocolate desserts) and was so surprised how much I enjoyed it. Rich without being too sweet.
We will return again soon.
A lot of family memories over 50 years here. We really appreciated the ice cream cones for the grand children and the friendly and quick service for our group of 7 people. A landmark place and nice staff. The fish and chips were tasty, not greasy, although the fish did turn soggy on the 3rd bite. Not as good as the old days. The room is beginning to look it could use another refresh to the one done about 15 years ago. Great staff, service and location. How to keep the fish going soggy and you'd be 5 stars again!
It was okay according to me as the waitress was new to restaurant, and thus the service was sort of slow. Including would be a group of nine people for the table. Overall it is a good place for gathering at Horseshoe Bay.
Food was terrible!!! Would not go back to eat! Crab dip had almost no crab in it, calamari was undercooked, fish & chips was just plain gross and tasted old. Cup of chowder was acceptable.
Troll’s is a comfortable family dining restaurant in the heart of a beautiful Horseshoe Bay setting serving a great variety of food. Some of us had perfectly fried fish & chips, squid & others had a gluten-free chicken burger in a lettuce wrap at reasonable prices & served by a friendly, happy young woman.
Disappointed in the quality of meal, for the price. My shrimp/crab omelette was cold in the middle and was taken back. Granted, they made me a new omelette, but my guest had finished their meal before I got mine.
Nice location, lovely view. One grumpy server, the rest lovely
Although we were not pressured to leave and had a nice social time with friends, I felt the food was poor, meagre, and expensive. We were at Horseshoe Bay and there is a bit of a captured clientele there putting in time waiting for ferries, but still...
We come to Troll’s every year from Alberta on our way to Vancouver Island.
The fish tacos are outstanding!!!
I will continue to recommend to everyone I know passing through. ❤️
This is the place to enjoy both good food and nice surrounding at a reasonable cost. Service is reasonable with exception of the Restaurant Manager who was outstanding in helping. We arrived at the restaurant about 10 minutes prior to the reserved time and the receptionist told us that our reservation is not registered in their system but they can still find a nice table for us in the hectic lunch time. Later on the Restaurant Manager managed to help us so that the reservation is confirmed and my point with Opentable is not lost. We are happy, as the meals quality and taste are excellent. We ordered fish & chips, poutine, pasta, baked salmon. Nice, indeed.
Lovely and delicious food! First time visiting in 21 years and everything was great!
The food was great and I think the price fits. The location was really nice especially with families. Only complaint was that one of order was missing an item and even after asking for it I still didn’t receive it. I also wanted more coffee but the waiter didn’t come till the end of our meals. But it was a very busy day so I can imagine it was a lotof work. Still I would come back, the food is very hardy and tasty.
We stop here every year on our way to Whistler! We look forward to it!! The food is great and the atmosphere is comfortable and the view spectacular !
Noticed that I could not find Troll's listed on the Open Table Vancouver site although Open table is the platform offered for booking on the restaurant site. And I did not receive any points.
The food was mediocre, the prices were far too high for what you got, and the restaurant itself was crowded and cold. Service was nothing special, the only standout thing about our dinner here was the view we caught before it got dark. I would not go back.
Great family friendly and convenient restaurant. Fish and chips crispy and delicious. Service was attentive and friendly. I can’t believe I’ve never been here before, but I will be back.
The higher noise level was due to it being New Year's Day—the place was jumping. Troll's has maintained its quality and charm since its inception 70 years ago. The staff were as always good-natured and efficient, even in that hectic atmosphere.
All proceeded as expected.. Table was ready upon entry. Service was friendly and good. Prices were reasonable.
Good food, varied menu and exceptional service. As requested, a lovely view over the water where we were able to relax and enjoy the food, while receiving great service. Thank you.
Seated a few minutes after reservation time. Servers avoided our table, it seems that they weren't sure which section was theirs. Three other tables that were seated after us, ordered before us. I had to finally flag down a server to order our food. Six parties that came in after us were served food before us. This is the third time of a total of six visits where service was poor. Food has always been great, and is the only reason I return - perhaps take out next time.
Our second visit since we moved to the area. Beautiful spot with great views and equally great food - clearly very popular with the locals as was very busy even though out of summer season - we booked ahead and got a great window seat reserved for us without asking. Excellent range of food, if you want a healthier option, house salads are great. Something for everyone.
As always, good service and tasty food combined with a comfortable family atmosphere. Thanks to the management for the complimentary and delicious birthday dessert for us to share!
I heard a lot of good things about Troll's so I reserved a table for 4 for a breakfast meeting and requested a quiet table by a window. We were given a corner table by the window which was fine until 2 ladies with 3 fussing and crying toddlers were seated right beside us. Needless to say, we got up and seated ourselves at a 'quiet' table on the other side of the restaurant which served us fine. Also, the food came cold and the waitress seemed perturbed during the entire time serving us. And a guy kept vacuuming the floor around the same tables over and over again. I felt like we were being rushed overall but we managed to stay on track with our meeting agenda and completed a successful meeting.
Easy to see why Troll's is so popular. Reliable good food for past 30? years.
Great food, excellent service, spectacular waterfront views!
As a whole it was average. It's known for its fish and chips. I found the batter too heavy and greasy.
I’ve got salad half of the ingredients was missed out.
Deep fry calamari wasn’t cook properly. Soup was very warm.
Only burgers were ok.
Basically, food was the worst part of our experience. They told us that they have a new chef.
Parked at ferry got wheel chair out bundled up in coldest morning of year to have breakfast at our reserved table. Only to walk all the way there to see a sign on the door that they r closed for cleaning! Nothing mentioned from reservation and nothing on their website that we could see.😢 wanted to leave ratings blank but site won’t allow
New Years day visit and restaurant was very busy, our server was fantastic juggling a very busy section. When we were seated we were told 25 minute wait for food, but it wasn't even 15 minutes and everything was delicious. We drank a lot of coffee refills and soda refills and our server was accommodating and not put out by our thirst (we had been hiking for hours that morning). Open Table reservation allowed us to book as we were driving there and be seated immediately.
Unfortunately our reservation was not honoured, we had to stand for half an hour waiting for our table and one member of our party was handicapped. After ordering it took 20 minutes to get our food.
We are from Abbotsfsord and meet with family from Gabriola and friends from Gibson's three or four times a year. We appreciate it that the staff look after us while we are waiting for our friends to arrive so we can order. My husband's father, George Wilson played rugby with Joe Troll and my husband, Dave Wilson knew Joe's son. Dave started going to Troll's i 1955 and there are a lot of memories and nostalgia associated with the restaurant. Fish and chips are the best. Nostalgia!
Troll's was as good now as when I first set foot in 1973
By FAR the best fish and chips on the coast!
Used to have great fish and chips...now its just a greasy mess. Batter is thin which is good except it is overly greasy...what a dissapointment...wont go back!
The salmon fish & chips is excellent. Perfect place to catch a meal after the ferry ride.
