REX at The Royal provides guests with transformed southern fare, a full bar, daytime cafe and curated bottle-shop housed in the historical Royal Theatre, known as a staple in the rich cultural history of the City of Philadelphia for its role as a hub for Black culture and artistry, including film-making and live music, during the 20th century. REX at The Royal, now operating out of the newly-renovated theatre, maintains key tenets of the historical site including a stage for live music performances, as well as sweeping arches and other details sustained from the original design. REX at The Royal cuisine pays homage to the great early 20th-century African-American chefs who adapted traditional southern fare to Philadelphia’s urban landscape. The concept’s foundation lies in the Lowcountry cuisine of the Southeast Atlantic coast, influenced as it was by the grains and traditions of the African diaspora melded with the local agriculture and fisheries.

    This was my first time back since Vespers had undergone new Ownership/ Management and I must say I had an absolute great time. The service was great, the bartender is an absolute doll and the owner introduced himself to me and was very pleasant and welcoming. I’ve had many birthday experiences here but this one in 2025 was the best so far. I will definitely be back and I recommend anyone who desires a great “Turnt up”party brunch to book now.

    I came out of town with my boyfriend and surprised him while we were in town and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The live music, ambiance, and overall experience was great. The drinks alcoholic and non-alcoholic were also amazing. Would recommend to everyone!

    Loved this welcoming, tasty place. Everything we tried was a hit- hummus, crispy Brussels sprouts with turkey bacon, jambalaya, salmon, cauliflower tacos, nuts and seeds, sweet potato donuts, and pear crisp. Everyone was pleased- from the vegans to the omnivores. Service was thoughtful, unpretentious, and well-timed. Place is super cool-looking, modern, and full of plants and twinkling lights. Will go back to hear their live music.
