On arriving at the Relais du Vin, you will have walked down rue Saint Denis, one of the oldest streets in Paris, laid out by the Romans as early as the first century, so named because it leads directly from the Pont-au-Change to Saint-Denis, where the Saint is said to have collapsed after his martyrdom. Visitors should be aware that this was a ‘gala’ street, through which kings and queens traditionally made their solemn entry into Paris. For these festivities, all the streets in their path, as far as Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral, were carpeted with silk fabrics and cameloté sheets.
